~Chapter 1~
Meeting the Government Guys
I woke up to the sun shining in my face. I slowly got out of my bed and walked to the kitchen. As soon as I poured milk in my cereal, I heard a knock at my door.
I walked over to the front door and looked out the peep hole. Two men in business suits were standing on my front porch. One of them had a big bushy mustache and the other one had a bald head. I guessed they worked for the government.
I opened the door and said "Well, hello. Why are you knocking on my door at eight o'clock in the morning?"
The one with the mustache gave me a dirty look and said "Watch your tone young lady. You don't know who your talking to. We are here to see you parents."
I wanted to rip that stupid mustache off his face but I knew that would just cause trouble. So I said "They are asleep. Come back later." I went to close the door in there faces but he put his hand in the way.
"Go wake them up. We will sit at your kitchen table." They walked right into my house like they owned it or something and sat at the table. I didn't like them at all.
"I will be back in a sec." then I ran down the stairs to my parents room.
I grabbed my dads foot and shook it. "Dad, wake up. There are to government dudes in our kitchen waiting to talk to you two."
My mom opened her eyes slowly and said "What did you say, Summer?"
I sighed. "I said, two government guys are in the kitchen and are waiting to talk to you two."
Mom got up quickly, put her robe on, then said "I'll go keep them company. You wake up your dad." then she went up stairs.
I grabbed my dads ankle and shook it. Once he woke up I told him what was going on. he said "Go up there and tell them I will be up there soon. I have to get dressed."
"Alright." I walked up stairs.
Five minutes later dad came up the stairs all ready. Then they made me go away cause I couldn't hear there conversation. I walked to my room and turned on the T.V. I flipped through the channels.
Thirty minutes later my mom walked into my room. She gave me a half smile and said "Summer, I need to tell you something."
I knew it was something bad. I just knew it. Why else would the government guys come here. I said "Just get it over with."
"Well, the men came here to tell us that there sending everyone, over the age of eighteen, to war."
"Wait, what? No they can't do that. Can they?" I asked, even though I knew the answer.
She gave me one of her motherly looks and said "I guess they can. The government does run the country. But anyways, they are sending everyone, not including the rich and famous, over eighteen to war and there is nothing we can do about it."
That's when a tear ran down my cheek. "They can't do that." I screamed. "They just can't. It is not fair."
My mother tried to comfort me, but it didn't work. I pushed her away and ran out the house.
~Chapter 2~
Tree Talk
That was how I handled myself when I was really upset. I run to my special pine tree and sit up there for an hour or two. I liked to be alone. I usually didn't talk to anyone. The only person I would talk to was my best friend, since as long as I can remember, Jaxson.
Jaxson looks kind of like me. He has dark brown hair and and big sky blue eyes. The only difference is that I have dark greenish - yellowish eyes. He is also seventeen, one year older than me. He is very good looking. I tell him that all the time. But there is nothing romantic between us. We are just really good friends.
I sit in the tree and look towards the mountains. They are beautiful. Its the time of year were the leaves turn red, yellow, orange, etc. The wind had an ice cold chill. I eventually fell asleep.
I woke up to Jaxson sitting right beside me. When he noticed I was awake, he said "Well, Sleep Beauty finally woke up!"
I stretched my arms. My back felt so stiff. "What time is it?"
He laid back on the trunk and put his hands behind his head. "When I left my house, about an hour ago, it was 12:30."
"Oh, great. Has your parents told you the news?"
"You mean the one about the government sending everybody over eighteen to war?" I nodded. "Yea, they told me that when I woke up this morning."
"It's crazy. I mean what are they going to do about all the kids that don't have older siblings? Throw them in some kind of daycare place."
He gave me a smile and said "You never know when the government is involved. My dad told me that they have a broadcast showing tonight that gives you all the details. Dad say most everybody is required to watch it."
"I think it's stupid." I said stubbornly.
"Yea. I agree."
"Wait, jaxson. That means you will be going to war in one year."
"I doubt they will keep sending people to the battlefield."
I knew that wasn't true and I had a feeling that he knew too. "I really hope your right. Cause losing my parents is horrible. But losing my parents and you... I might commit suicide."
"Let's concentrate on happy things now. Not bad." he gave me a huge smile. I couldn't help but laugh.
"Alright then. What do you want to talk about."
"Let me tell you about prom." Prom is this weekend. I can't go since I am in tenth grade. Most guys in his grade don't really care about prom, they just go with there girlfriends.
Surprisingly, Jaxson is so excited. "So who are you going with?"
He gave me a slight smile. "That's what I have to tell you about... I kind of need someone to go with me. My date called me last night and told me that she couldn't make it."
I felt so bad. I knew he really wanted to go. I also knew he wasn't going to go with just friends. "I'm sorry, Jaxson. I knew how much you wanted to go. Maybe you can find another date in time."
"Yea, that's just it." He says. "I was wondering if you could go with me. Not as a date or anything. You know, just as a friend."
I knew he was asking this so he wouldn't look bad in front of his friends. But I still had that nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach. "I would but I don't have a dress and I'm a sophomore, only juniors and seniors can go."
"Actually, sophomores and freshman can go if they get asked by a junior or senior."
"Well... That still doesn't solve my dress problem."
He gave me his famous smile and said "I have a plan for that one. You ask you rich dad to give you money for you to buy a dress. Then, I drive you to the dress store or whatever and you do your thing."
"Well, you did have a plan. I guess I'm going. When do you want me to get the money?"
He shrugs and says "As soon as possible, I guess."
I smile. Me, Summer Gray is going to prom with Jaxson Haze this Friday. That is way better than sitting on the couch eating potato chips. "Alrighty then, let me go get the money and I will meet you at your car." I said as we got out the tree.
"Thank you so much, Summer. Your awesome."
I hold my hands up to my chest and say "I know... What would you ever do with out me?"
We both laugh and walk towards are homes.
