This is the underlying message in the new heartwarming family-friendly film “Troop Zero,” starring Allison Janney, Viola Davis, Jim Gaffigan and young actress Mckenna Grace.
Directed by Bert & Bertie and currently streaming on Amazon Prime, the story set in 1977 rural Georgia, follows a misfit girl obsessed with outer space. Believing her dead mother lives on in the skies beyond, she jumps at the chance to compete to be recorded on NASA’s Golden Record and send her message to the outer limits. To help, she recruits a makeshift troop of Birdie Scouts, forging friendships that last a lifetime and beyond.
The supporting cast of characters deliver a fresh authenticity, including actor Ash Thapliyal who portrays the NASA scientist involved in the competition.
The role marks the biggest to date for Ash, who only started pursuing his acting career about 5 years ago when he was searching for a midlife change. Originally from Mumbai, India, and now based in Houston, Texas, Ash previously appeared in the action-drama "AmeriGeddon," horror tale "The Devil’s Candy," family comedy "A Curry on an American Plate," and CBS series "NCIS: New Orleans."
Next, Ash will play the President of India in the new HBO Max comedy thriller, "Superintelligence," from executive producer Melissa McCarthy and director Ben Falcone.
I recently caught up with Ash Thapliyal to find out more:
Tell us about your role in “Troop Zero.”
ASH THAPLIYAL: I play Dr. Persad, a NASA scientist assigned to travel the world to assemble images and a variety of sounds for the Golden Record. The disc is intended to accompany the Voyager probe into the furthest reaches of space, and hopes to convey to alien life the culture and environment of our planet. To that end, I initiate a competition among girl scouts for a chance to be recorded for it, setting up the main plot of “Troop Zero.”
How was it to work alongside Allison Janney, Viola Davis and Jim Gaffigan among others?
ASH: They were all friendly and professional. Allison gave me useful acting tips. Allison found it funny when I said I shortened my name to Ash as people in the US make fun of my full name “Ashish” that resembles in sound with the smoking drug Hashish. Jim Gaffigan was one of the first to introduce himself to me and also introduced me to Viola Davis right away but for some reason Viola approached me 3 days into the shooting to introduce herself again. Everyone in the team of cast and crew were so nice that I felt like I was in a loving family.
What would you consider your characters ‘best’ quality? And their ‘worst’?
ASH: Dr. Persad was advanced for his time and was eager to have girls interested in science and encourage their participation in the Voyager initiative. The movie does not delve into the negative part of the character.
Any interesting stories from the set you can share with us?
ASH: Shooting at night in a swamp area and during daytime in the heat of May/June summer in Louisiana was a different experience. Temperatures used to go above 100 Deg F during daytime and all of us were looking for ways to cool ourselves. Once due to sweat I got make-up in my eyes and the irritation along with tears made it very difficult to keep composure during the shoot.
And at night, we had to find our way in and out of the sets in darkness and not trip over cables or bang equipment or chairs. Also, there was wild life in the swamp that we had to be careful of. There was a person who was always on a look out for snakes and alligators.
What’s the biggest lesson you learned from working on this project?
ASH: The professionalism of cast and crew who were not complaining of the heat and were eager to make others also comfortable was something we should all learn from.
And, now just for fun:
Who’s your favorite actor/actress?
ASH: I’m a fan of the greats: Marlin Brando and Meryl Streep.
What role from the past do you wish you could have played?
ASH: I am too green to think of that as I am still exploring my range.
Favorite movie or TV show from your childhood.
ASH: “Diff'rent Strokes.”
Tell us one thing that would surprise our readers to learn about you.
ASH: I am an engineer and worked in many countries. Then a midlife crisis hit me which drove me to explore my talents and I surprisingly found my calling in acting.
How can fans keep up with you?
ASH: Having started in this line only a few years ago, I don’t think I have fans yet and so never put much thought on reaching out to them. Then one of the actor’s mom in “Troop Zero” told me to open an Instagram account, so I’m using that to let people know what I am working on in the entertainment world.
My Instagram handle is @ashthapliyal.actor link
Thanks, Ash -- keep shooting for the stars!
