Sonic Fan Characters Article: OC x Canon

Every canon character was once an OC. OC x OC pairings are fine, aren't they? So what's the big deal over OC x Canon pairings? Yes, sometimes they can be annoying, especially in this fandom... But that doesn't make them wrong.

If a person pairs their Sonic FC with Tails, then so what?
If a person pairs their Prototype FC with Alex, then what's the big deal?
If a person pairs their Mass Effect FC with Legion, then why are you guys ranting on about it?

They don't love that person in the show/movie/game/comic/book!

They're not your characters; it just shouldn't be done!

You're constantly going on about how you love *insert celebrity crush's name here* and you know, I've never heard them sing a song about you! THAT MEANS YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A CRUSH YOU DIRTY ROTTEN GOOD FOR NOTHING SON OF A BITCH!

It's not CANON? Are you kidding me? You didn't seem too worried about canon when you were off shipping Sonadow or Tailamy or whatever the fuck it is you ship. And don't you dare use that 'troo luv' shit with me if you support Sonamy; Sonally is the ONLY canon Sonic pairing so yeah, if you ship Sonamy and you hate OC/Canon pairings because they're not canon you're just as bad as the OC/canon people.

Which... Actually isn't all that bad, but you're the one being an asshole to them so knock that shit off.

Really? Any OC/canon pairing INSTANTLY makes the OC a Stu? Well when did this happen!? Does that mean Sonic and Sally can NEVER get married just because two different people probably came up with them!?

In all fairness, a Stu is a Stu, and while some Stus are paired with a canon character, that isn't the one ultimate Stu trait.

And if they're not your characters, then why are you still forcing your OC on your best friend's OC or your idol's OC? THEY NOT YOURS EITHER.

In conclusion, if an OC twists the canon character way out of their usual antics (Suddenly NOT DRUNK Tony Stark! Suddenly HAPPY Shadow! Suddenly not an emo Batman!) then yeah, that's annoying and bad and usually a Mary-Sue. But not ALL OC/canon pairings are like that, and it seems to me that people forget this.

I will never hate OC/canon pairings, I promise you that. They can be tricky to get right, but it can be done.

Tooootie I have yet to see one OC/Cannon character done right. Honestly, it's so over used and cliche it's just boring to me.Then again, I'm the type of person who hates shipping out of cannon (Even in homestuck where pretty much any ship could be cannon in an AU). I actually don't like having fan characters have anything to do with the cannon, but that's just me and it kinda defeats the purpose of "Fan Characters". I just find it more interesting when the story is built from the ground up.

MephilesTheDark Of course I prefer non-OC/Canon ships. I'm with you on that, this is more so a message to the flamboyant 'YOU SHIP YOUR OC AND A CANON FUCK YOU GO TO HELL THAT'S NOT CANON DICKHEAD!' people. I'm not big on Homestuck ships at all. :c But in the (small) Prototype fandom, I've come across several good oc/canon ships~

Tooootie Oh I see. I tend to keep my opinions on others characters to myself because it's *their* character and all they really need is to have fun with it; even if it's bad. So yeah those people are grade A douchebags. Oh, hm. As I said those ships bore me in general so yeah.

MephilesTheDark I don't. C: I give people my opinions on evveryyything because I'm a rude inconsiderate bitch. But I just hate people who don't give a good opinion based on fact and evidence. In general, they bore me. I haven't ever found a OC/canon I can really get into, (Unless Paragon!Shepard and Alex Mercer is kind of OC/canon... Not really...) buuuuuttttt I don't hate the idea of oc/canon. Just when people do it shittily.

Tooootie I think anyone can hate anything when it's done shittily, no matter what it is. (OC/OC, Cannon/Cannon ect) Quality of the relationship for story value is also important!

thetacoman Well duh Prototype OC/CC is fine. You seem to be forgetting something crucial here. Which is Mercer. Anything and anyone can be shipped with Mercer and it will be fine bros. (don't even touch Homestuck ships unless you want to die) I don't like OC/CC because they seem to be 'Oh hey my character is an unknown thing BETTER PAIR IT WITH A KNOWN THING THAT'LL MAKE ME POPULAR!' It's not like I'm canon police or anything, but it just seems as though one could be more original and find someone else's OC to force their character to be in love with. :P
