Suspect in Murders Above Deli Says He Lied in Police Tape

By SUSAN SAULNY

A suspect in the triple murder above the Carnegie Deli last summer completed nearly two days of testimony yesterday that almost completely reversed statements he gave to the police and prosecutors after his arrest last year. The suspect, Sean Salley, testified in State Supreme Court in Manhattan yesterday that he lied to the authorities in his statements because he was frightened -- of the other suspect in the case, Andre Smith, and of the detectives investigating the murders. On a police v...

Survivors Recount Details of Killings Above Carnegie Deli for 2 Juries

By SUSAN SAULNY

Rosemond Dane told two juries yesterday that something ''didn't seem right'' when two men entered her friend's apartment above the Carnegie Delicatessen. The tension that froze everyone else in the room. The heavy coats on a hot summer day. There was one other clue, Ms. Dane testified at the trials of the two men accused of shooting five people in the apartment on May 10, 2001: the way her friend, Jennifer Stahl, had second thoughts after deciding to buzz one of the men up, saying, ''I don't...

By SUSAN SAULNY

The voice on the recording sounding shaky, frightened and desperate: ''A bunch of us have been shot!'' a man screamed. ''I'm bleeding out of the side of my head and I'm losing a lot of blood. Please, God!'' he cried, later adding: ''They came in, they broke in and they had guns.'' ''Hurry please,'' the man, Anthony Veader, said, the pace of his voice changing from an avalanche of words to something slower, like a prayer. ''Hurry up.''

Competing Claims in Trial In Killings Above a Deli

By SUSAN SAULNY

One man says he was not even there on the evening last May when three people were killed and two others wounded during a botched robbery of a marijuana dealer in an apartment above the Carnegie Delicatessen. The other man says he was forced to join the robbery and killed only one person, by accident. The prosecutors say both men are lying. Those were the competing claims yesterday in separate trials before two juries in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, with the jurors shuttling in and out o...

By Susan Saulny (NYT) (Compiled by Anthony Ramirez)

The two men accused of the Carnegie Deli murders last year will have two juries sitting in one courtroom for their separate trials, a State Supreme Court justice said yesterday. The men, Andre Smith, 31, and Sean Salley, 29, are each charged with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder and robbery in the shooting deaths in an apartment above the Midtown delicatessen last May. When Acting Speaks Volumes

By Martin Arnold

A spoken book. There can be tremendous pleasure in hearing a book, if the voice of the narrator is right. Those authors who don't narrate their own books have in a sense ceded to an actor the direct connection to the listener-reader that is part of the power of authorship, in much the same way a playwright does. But if the whisper or the rumble resonating from an audiobook has the right complexity of tones, it can be as satisfying as theater. Which meant that eventually, great narrators woul...
