True, Sweeney Todd may have been based on a true story to some extent, (some people say it was only based on an urban legend, though) but there have been many adaptations of the story, hell knows if he was ever real.

heck yeah he was real!!! if you look in a book called cannibal killers and go under the chapter of demon barber and you'll find him. he may have gone by a different name but the fact is there that he is real or was until he died.

yeah i got a book about the movie and it had a whole section about the REAL Sweeney Todd, i'm not kiddin :)

I've read books about his validity too, but at the end of the day, it's speculation. Record keeping was nowhere near as extensive and organized then as it is today. I think the baking of people probably happened at some point, but I don't know that it was to the extent of what the musical shows.

Yes, he was rea, but the real story isn't the same as the movie story. Sweeney Todd did kill people, but not for vengeance. And there was a Mrs Lovett who ground up the bodies. She was not in love with Sweeney though.
