The Kids Don’t Know
Chapter 8
Do or Die
My parents had a freak out. But (Thank you dad!) I have good eavesdropping skills. “Chris, I thought that you were out of our lives for good!” I heard Dad yell. “Listen, man! This is my job now! I have no intent of putting your kids through you-know-what.” I was thinking, until I remembered Dad saying that McLean made his life miserable. After like thirty minutes of yelling, we left. “Hey, Mom, do you know Mr. McLean?” Dominic asked. I hit my face. Mom just sat there. Ding-Dong! I walked up to the door and opened it to a man with black hair and olive eyes. I opened my eyes wide, took a deep breath and yelled, “MOOOOOOM!” at the top of my lungs. I was told to do that if I ever saw that man. Mom ran into the room and growled. “Trent. What are you doing here?” My mind blew up. Trent. Why did that seem so familiar? “You! You are horrible! Disgusting! Sick!” I suddenly yelled. Dad told me that Trent and her dated in high school, and then he kissed Heather. The Heather, who is Hanalei’s mom. And evil. “Now, is that anyway to talk to your father Elle?” I opened my eyes even wider and started crying hysterically. Trent came to my level and said, “Yes Elle, I am your real father. Duncan and Gwen lied. Gwen is a lying girl and has been since high school.” I had an understanding of this man being evil. Like a little kid I ran to my room, and called my dad. “What Gwen?” Was what he said when he picked up the phone. “Dad? Guess who’s here.”
Exactly 10 minutes later Dad was here (which is impossible unless you go 90 on the interstate, which is a 65 zone) having a stare-off with Trent. Suddenly Trent said to Dad, “Where is my boy?” I was completely mortified. Dominic was not his son! Right? Suddenly I was mad as heck and wasn’t going to take it anymore. I slowly backed up and picked up the baseball bat that was against the wall. I suddenly lost it and kind of hit Trent about 20 times. “Get out of here! Now!” I yelled. I hit Trent in the leg, and kind of broke it. “Gwen! Take me to the hospital!” He yelled. She said no and he reached up and managed to stand. Trent balled his fist around my hair, and pulled. Hard. I yelled out in pain, and I saw my dad basically explode. He punched Trent in the nose and said, “If you’ve got a problem, never take it out on my kids.” I grinned. We finally took Trent to the hospital and he ratted me out. “No, I will not press charges.” He told the nurse. The nurse said, “Why Mr. Ava?” He said that I was his child.
I stormed out of the hospital with dad. He drove me to his house, and I told Dominic what happened. “I hate Trent! Nobody treats my sister like that.” He said. I knew Donnie cared for me on the inside; even if most of the time he didn’t show it.. I turned on the radio and heard Taylor swift’s “Mean”
You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again
Got me feeling like a nothing
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard
Calling me out when I'm wounded
You, picking on the weaker man
Isn’t that like Trent? I was singing it when an idea popped into my head. “Hey, Donnie? Where’s your eclectic?” He pointed to the guitar against the wall, and I took it. I started strumming on the notes, and this song was born:
You walk in the room,
Like you own this house,
You need to get a life now,
And stop messin’ around now,
But how?
Don’t hit,
Don’t hurt,
Don’t come back,
‘Cause if you don’t,
You might not make it out alive!
Do or die time!
Right now it’s do or die time.
And that’s all I wrote, but I think it made me feel better.
