I know I can be a little brainless. If it's not food, then it doesn't really catch my attention. I'm not so good at reading emotions; I can't see people inside and out like others can. I sometimes make matters worse because of my density and end up either hurting or angering someone with my actions. So I'm not good at communicating and seeing how someone, mainly a girl, ticks.
But this is different… I can see it, when he looks at him, I can see it all. The longing, the love, the heartbreak, the jealousy, the anger, the pain, and everything else mixed into those dark chocolate eyes. Like the open book in his hands, I can read every thought clearly; sense every bit of temptation and agony that comes from his pores. I know that even though his face is set in stone, trying to look as if he doesn't have a care in the world, his eyes are willing themselves not to cry. I see it clear as day, my little buddy Noah, is in love.
During Total Drama World Tour, I became friends with Indian boy. At first it was kind of strange because he wasn't someone I thought I get along with really well, but I did. We laughed, we talked, and we enjoyed each other's company throughout the trip around the world in Chris's plane of doom (I still have nightmares sometimes). It was a strange friendship but he became my little buddy and I became his chubby buddy; and knowing that I could be by his side made me feel happy. I felt like I needed to protect him (he was so small and fragile: like a baby). I also needed him to help me with the more trivial things as he was smarter than me. I scratched his back, he scratched mine, you know?
Anyway, it was when I started hanging around Noah that I started to notice something about him (It was crazy too, because I'm as oblivious to these things as I've stated before). I noticed that he was always staring at someone; that particular person being the gapped toothed brunette, Cody. Whenever the two interacted, I noticed that Noah smiled, more than I've ever seen him before. He seemed so giddy and excited whenever Cody laughed and his eyes held warmth that I never believed possible. They never argued and Noah made sure that they never got close to it neither.
It also wasn't just that that I noticed, I discovered many other things while watching my little buddy. I saw how angry he looked whenever Sierra hugged Cody tightly to her chest. I saw how hurt he was whenever Cody made a pass at Gwen. But most of all, I saw an emotion in Noah's eyes that I would have never known what it was if I never looked at Izzy the same way; Unconditional love.
He'd take a bullet for Cody, jump in front of oncoming traffic to protect the little geek, hold him thru rain, sleet and snow. He grew worried when he saw the younger teen injured or scared, he wanted to cry when he saw the tears building up in those teal eyes. I could tell just by that one look he held only for Cody, that no other word could describe it except true love. And it killed me, realizing that his love for the tech geek was one sided and that Cody was only interested in girls. It broke me up, deep inside my heart to see my little buddy, struggling, to not cry on camera. Watching him, watching Cody as the brunette flirted with almost every girl he saw, I wanted to pick him up and shake him. Tell him that his one true love was right next to him and that he was too blinded to see it. I wanted to slap him till he came to his senses and understood that the only one who would ever shower him with enough love was…Noah.
When he left, when he was eliminated, I was alone. I didn't have a little buddy to rely on anymore. I was a sitting duck on open season. It wasn't long before I would be jumping from the plane as well.
Noah told me about Alejandro, that he shouldn't be trusted. I don't know why I didn't listen. I should have, shouldn't have trusted him, but it was hard when he seemed like such a nice guy; so handsome and sweet and-uhhh I mean, yeah, a nice guy. However, now I was falling out of a plane, tugging on my parachute string that would save my life. The first three times nothing happened, but on the fourth pull I finally managed to get it undone. Now instead of falling, I was gently floating toward earth.
Still high in the sky, I began to wonder more about my little buddy and his secret crush. I wondered 'why him?' What was it about the little blue eyed male that made Noah like this? Made his tan friend go so weak in the knees, make him smile like an idiot, and made his eyes turn that lusty dark chocolate color? Sure Cody had an adorable charm to him, but it reminded me of a kid brother instead of a boyfriend. But then again, Noah was different, and he seemed to see the brunette as more than just a little brother.
This only made my body churn horribly when I thought of how Noah was trying to obtain something so out of reach. So lost to his touch that I was curious as to know why my little buddy held on to his ever growing love for Cody so tightly.
Then again, Noah was the genius.
'The final three' I thought as I happily munched on a bag of chips I managed to snag. Noah sat next to me, stealing some of the barbeque chips from my bag and popping them into his mouth, a small smile of his normally hard features. I knew why though. Because of 'Cody', who was able to make it to the final three; mostly thanks to Sierra's help. The other two were Heather and Alejandro.
"Alright ex contestants, it's time for you to pick the final three contestants you're going to root for." Bridgette said, holding up flags with either Heather's, Alejandro's or Cody's faces on them. I knew that I wasn't going to pick Heather (She scared me), but I was trying to decide between Alejandro or Cody. Truthfully if I never knew of Noah's crush on Cody and the pain he was going through, I would have chosen Cody without hesitation. Now, though, I didn't know if I wanted to see Cody win and possibly break my little buddy's heart more. Even if Alejandro turned out to be a jerk, I couldn't help but feel that Cody was just as bad a guy as Al.
'No, stop it Owen, it's not Cody's fault; he's not purposely hurting Noah. He just as naïve as you are. You can't hate him for not knowing he was making Noah miserable'. 'Hey chubby buddy?" I looked down at the bookworm who was giving me a worried look, "You okay?" I smiled and gave him a big bear hug, practically crushing him, "I'm fine little buddy. So, who you gonna root for?" I asked, dropping him back on his feet. He seemed dazed for a second before he answered, "Cody. I hate Heather, and Alejandro," his face went grim and he looked like he wanted to punch something, but he quickly composed himself "Besides, Cody's my friend, I would have voted for him no matter who the other final two were". I believed him when he said that, but I also knew that he wasn't just voting for Cody because they were 'friends'. I bet you that if I or Izzy (As Noah gets along with her as well) made it with Cody to the final three, Noah would still pick Cody in a heartbeat.
"Who are you rooting for?" He suddenly asked. He was looking at me expectantly and I knew that he was waiting for me to say Cody as well. I sighed, "Same" I said. He smiled softly and then turned to grab two Cody flags. I watched as him as he went. I was still so very confused as to what about Cody was so special. Why would Noah continue to fool himself into believing that Cody may turn around and run into his arm? Isn't he suppose to be smart, shouldn't he know already?
Love makes people stupid sometimes, doesn't it?
Two years later after TDTW, Chris decided to throw us a reunion party (and who am I to say no; I love to Party). So I, along with my date Izzy (we got back together), went to the party to reunite with some of our old friends. I kept in touch with a lot of them, but others I hadn't seen in two years.
When we got there, the party was in full swing. Geoff and Bridgette were on the dance floor along with Katie and Sadie. Trent was messing with his guitar while happily chatting with Gwen (who he had gotten back together with). Courtney and Duncan were arguing again, as they usually did. Eva was lifting weights and looked about ready to kill Ezekiel. Heather was glaring at Al, who was glaring back at her. Beth and Lindsey were drooling over Justin who, by the way, looked stunning in hi- I mean….yeah, moving on. Harold was beat boxing and trying to impress Leshawna. Leshawna was eating and happily smiling at Harold while DJ petted Bunny (his pet bunny). Sierra was taking pictures and typing on her blog (not the pizza box). That left Noah and Cody. I looked over and saw Noah waving at me and Izzy from another couch; A book lay in his lap (oh typical little buddy).
"Hi Noahhhh, where's Cody?" Izzy cheerily asked, cocking her head in search of the small brunette. "Why would you ask me?" he questioned, eyebrow raised. She turned back to him and laughed, "Oh Noah, I know, besides Sierra, that you would be the first person to go looking for him" I couldn't help but slightly nod. Luckily Noah didn't see it, "He's not here yet" Noah grumbled, looking back at his book and tried to go back to reading. I was about to open my mouth to say something, when the front door burst open.
My mouth dropped when I saw Cody enter, looking as if he had been run over by a truck. His hair was messy, his clothes were rippled and wrinkled and he looked as if he hadn't slept in weeks. I turned to look at Noah who had a concerned look on his face. "Cody? What's wrong?" Sierra's shrill voice asked as she hopped up and strode over the smaller teen. I watched her place her hand on his shoulder but he brushed it off and walked over to the couch Trent and Gwen were sitting at. He landed in a lump, staring blankly at the floor. I was a bit curious as to why he was so upset. "Hey Cody, is something wrong?" I asked.
"Cheated…" he mumbled making little shapes in the carpet with his foot. "Cheated?" Gwen asked, eyebrows raised. "She cheated on me…she cheated on me…with another man" He whimpered, biting his lip as tears built up behind his teal eyes. Suddenly it all came into place. A women, perhaps Cody's girlfriend, had cheated on him with another man. Suddenly all my resentment towards him for hurting my bookworm buddy vanished and was replaced with a sympathetic glance. Then an idea so great I couldn't believe I'd came up with it popped into my head. I elbowed Noah, who shot me a glare but disappeared when I pointed to Cody in the 'go get him' gesture. He nodded and quickly walked over to Cody. Trent and Gwen, sensing what he was doing, got up to give them some space.
Noah sat and stared at Cody, waiting patiently until Cody looked up at him. He didn't say anything, didn't need to. He simply stroked Cody's hair and rubbed circles on the tech geek's back. It was a very simple gesture, but it was very effective as suddenly, like a switch had been turned on, Cody burst into a river of tears. His head found Noah's shoulder and he sobbed, fingers gripping Noah's sweater vest for dear life. No one spoke, just watched the scene unfold. Everyone, with the exception of Sierra, stared at the two like they were meant to be together.
And then I could even see it; see why Noah was so obsessive over this boy, why he tried so hard to believe in the inevitable.
Because at this moment, under the flashing lights and the music, now playing a soft rock melody, the two fit together perfectly, like a puzzle piece in need of its other part to complete the puzzle; the puzzle known as love.
So Noah really was the genius.
I took them back to my place after the party (They ended up falling asleep in each other's arms). I set up the futon and placed them down on it (not once did they wake up or move from the spot they were in). Izzy had followed me home and was helping by throwing a blanket around them. She smiled, turned and gave me a goodnight kiss, and then left back to her own home. I turned back to them and smiled before I too went upstairs for some well deserved rest.
When I awoke the next morning and went down to make breakfast, I couldn't help but stop at the top of the stairs and take in what was going on downstairs. Noah and Cody were both still covered in the blanket Izzy had given them; cuddle up next to each other, watching TV. Cody's head was under Noah's chin and he had a sleepy, but content, look on his face. He looked up at Noah and in just a flicker of a second I saw…unconditional affection towards the bookworm.
Quietly, as best I could, I retreated back toward my room, all the while with a goofy grin plastered on my face. Maybe I was wrong, maybe there was hope. Maybe Noah thought this plan out all along. Or maybe it was just pure chance. Whatever it was I didn't care, my little buddy was happy.
My gay little Buddy…
