Meredith Sulez - The Vampire Diaries

But now, looking at herself, she was puzzled. Who was she? A Hispanic girl named for her mother’s Welsh best friend in college. A hunter-slayers of vampires who had kitten canines, a vampire twin, and whose group of friends included Stefan, a vampire; Elena, an ex-vampire – and possibly another vampire, although she was extremely hesitant to call Damon a “friend”.

★ How I feel about this character:

I don’t think there is one exact word to describe how I feel about Meredith Sulez. She was my childhood heroine with wit and secrecy and a maturity that, I’ll admit, made me more connected to her than I would ever be with Bonnie or Elena. Meredith has class, charisma, and can give even the more dangerous vampires a run for their money. Dark Reunion described her best, IMO, as a warrior; she’s not an ice princess or a cute, bubbly teenager, but a girl (young woman) with her priorities straight and her strength neither over-exemplified, nor underrated (as per the usual 90’s female character).

Meredith does not get enough love :)

★ All the people I ship romantically with this character:

Damon/Meredith

(Contrary to what seems to be fandom assumption, shipping these two does not, in any sense, come from Damon “being scared” of Meredith – I have my own personal opinion on Nightfall and it’s off-color characterization, which I’ll save for another time.)

To me, Damon and Meredith are practically made to have the most intriguing dynamic in the books. They have this really interesting way with words, perfect with their intellectualism – which I love more in them than just about any other YA couple. Meredith is cunning, strong-willed, secretive, and elusive enough to provide Damon a true challenge. Damon is all of those things as well, and could possibly push Meredith to accept some of the darker parts of her life. I think, if Damon were to stop chasing his brother’s girl – for whatever reason, Meredith would give him a run for his money.

God, these two are wonderfully compatible.

I would gush more, but I’ll save that for another time :)

Meredith/Alaric

Besides the fact that Meredith/Alaric are pretty damn vanilla, we just don’t see interaction between them. We see the atypical romantic circumstance, but never a serious conversation (or even a light-hearted exchange) or anything that might demonstrate what these two are like in day-to-day life. I just…don’t ship it. I don’t hate it, but I feel like it was mostly just used to pair Meredith off (because, in today’s (and yesterday’s) society, single = unhappy) and don’t have affection for them.

★ My non-romantic OTP for this character:

Meredith/Elena

I’ll admit, I loath book!Elena to her Mary-Sue core. The girl drives me insane because I’ll never understand why anyone gave the girl genuine time-of-day after the way she treated people. But, everyone loves her – she’s Scarlett without resentment from society. C’est la vie.

That said, her interaction with Meredith does make me enjoy what I see in their scenes. Their friendship has that sense of equals that Meredith/Bonnie just don’t have, and you can see that, through thick and thin, Meredith and Elena care a lot about each other. I wish these two had more scenes, TBH.

★ My unpopular opinion about this character:

Meredith does not hate vampires. Meredith does not hate vampires. Meredith does not hate vampires. Sorry, am I repeating myself? Yeah, Meredith is not show!Bonnie. She’s wary of vampires, but that neither affects her friendship with Elena when she becomes a vampire, nor does it keep Meredith from trying to help Stefan when he goes to sacrifice himself to Klaus. The girl doesn’t hate vampires, and never shows any resentment to those she meets.

Also, Meredith is not a prude. Common accusation, common aggravation.

★ One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

I do wish we had seen Cristian in Midnight, and Meredith’s hunter storyline came full circle. I know a lot of people felt like Meredith’s revelations in Midnight were random (they weren’t, guys.) and had trouble understanding the purpose of them. According to LJS, she intended to pursue this storyline, but no one really knows what will happen with the ghostwriter, so….yeah, I wish it had happened in Midnight so that I could see what LJS really had planned for Meredith’s future.
