"Ok, Betty. What's wrong?" Daniel asked. Betty had come to visit him for what she had described as a 'passing by'. However, Daniel could easily see through Betty's pretenses. Especially as she was pacing to and fro in front of his desk.
Betty stopped walking in continous lines, and stared at Daniel, wearing an innocent expression.
"Nothing's wrong. Why would anything be wrong? I've got a job that I love, a great family who haven't got any problems - yet, anyway." She was so stressed that her words came out hurried and high - pitched. Daniel raised his eyebrows; inclined his head. He was waiting for her to continue, and Betty quickly realised that.
"Right, so maybe there is something wrong," Betty admitted, sighing heavily.
"What is it?" Daniel asked, evidently curious, but also slightly worried. Betty always put herself under too much strain, weighing other people's problems on her shoulders as well as her own. It can't be good for her, Daniel thought, shaking his head slightly.
"It's Matt," Betty confessed. "He's turning my dream job into a nightmare."
"Ah," Daniel said, nodding his head once in acknowledgement. "Well, have you tried just talking to him?"
Betty stared at him with an incredulous expression on her face. "Daniel, where have you been for the last two weeks? Matt took that job purely to get revenge." She sat down on one of the orange chairs facing Daniel's desk. "The last thing he'll want to do is talk to me. I don't blame him, either," she added.
"You don't know that. Guys are weird sometimes. Believe me, I know," Daniel chuckled. Betty dropped her head in her hands.
"I've screwed it up, haven't I?" she murmured.
"What, your job? I thought it was Matt who was messing it up, not you."
"My relationship!" Betty replied.
"Oh. But we were just talking about..." Betty glanced up to give Daniel an I-can't-believe-you look; Daniel decided on a different route to comforting her. He got up and sat on the other orange chair, leaning forward. "Just talk with him. You'll never know if it works until you try it."
Betty looked up at him; he smiled encouragingly at her. She smiled back, straightening her glasses.
"Thanks, Daniel," Betty said, getting up slowly. "I'll be back, whether I've got good news... or not." Daniel gave her a hearty thumbs up. Betty laughed as she left his office. She knew it was genuine.

Betty turned the corner, listening to her heart beating heavily against her chest. Why am I so nervous? she thought to herself. It's only silly, goofy Matt.
She smiled sadly to herself. He wasn't silly or goofy anymore, and it hurt her deeply that she was the cause of it.
Betty had reached the door to Matt's office; she could see that Matt had not noticed her. He was facing away from his office door, instead opting to stare through the window. Betty took a deep breath. She straightened her skirt, brushing it off. Daniel's words were going through her mind. She was having doubts about even attempting this -Matt would probably just tell her to go away. However, Daniel had been right. You don't know if they will work or not unless you try. That thought was what kept her from walking away.
She knocked on the door, and then stepped into the room. She had come inside just in time to see Matt turn around, a dazed expression on his face. He looked like he'd just woken up; it reminded Betty of Matt when he was joking around. However, his countenance changed as soon as he saw that it had been Betty who had interrupted him.
"Betty, I understand that you work for me," he put heavy emphasis on the last part. "But could you leave me alone once in a while? I know you used to suck up to Daniel, but I'm different to him."
"Oi! I did not-" Betty began to argue. However, she refrained herself. That was not what she was here for.
She decided to be straight forward with Matt. As long as she was doing this at all, she might as well not beat around the bush. "Matt, this isn't about work. It's about you and me."
A dozen emotions flickered across his face, before he settled for angry.
"You ane me - we're over," he growled, finality ringing clear in his voice. He began to turn his chair back to face the window again. However, Betty rushed over and grabbed the soft, white chair, stopping him.
"Please can we just talk about this?" Betty pleaded. "I don't want to leave things like this. In fact, I don't want to leave it at all!"
"Neither do I, Betty!" Matt roared, jumping up and sending his chair flying. Betty flinched. "You're the one who decided to leave 'it' by kissing that guy!" He sighed and his shoulders drooped, all the anger slowly evapourating with his memory. He pulled his chair back and slumped into it, rubbing his eyes with the palms of his hands in steady, rhythmic circles. Betty stepped back slightly, a little scared by his sudden mood swings. Betty moved forward again, reaching a hand towards Matt. However, she stopped herself. She had to let Matt get over this first; she had no way of knowing if her action would comfort or anger him, but she was more inclined to the latter option.
"Matt... I'm so sorry. I don't think I can even try to express how sorry I am. But I told you before. That kiss, it meant nothing! It was a way of saying goodbye, I suppose."
"Seems like a pretty weird goodbye," Matt said under his breath.
"Seriously, Matt! Henry has got a girlfriend! I've got over him; that kiss was purely a way of leaving our relationship behind us! We are both ready for new relationships, and we both knew that-"
"Betty, do you love me?" Matt interrupted suddenly. Betty had been so caught up in her rambling, that she hadn't noticed him staring up at her with agonised eyes. Betty's eyes widened, and she stared back at Matt. She could feel herself leaning forward slightly.
"I - Of course I do," Betty whispered. For the first time in over two weeks, Matt smiled at her. In fact, it was more than a smile. It was a grin, a full, ear-to-ear grin. Betty grinned back.
"I'm... so sorry I took this job to get back at you." Matt's voice was barely audible as he looked down at his hands. "There was no doubt in my mind - even then - that I loved you. I love you, Betty."
Suddenly he looked up, his eyes bright and warm. A small smile pulled again at the corners of his mouth. He jumped up off of his chair, but this time it wasn't in anger. It was in happiness and pure joy. He started to stride towards Betty, his arms open. Betty met him halfway, and they embraced, Matt lifting her up slightly. He let her down again, keeping his arms wrapped around her. They stared at each other with warm, excited arms.
"I love you, too." Betty whispered, laying her head against his chest.
