West Side Story Smash Hit Musical West Side Story

A few weeks ago, the orchestra for Broadway's West Side Story was gutted. In a cost-cutting measure, five violinists were told to clean out their lockers and their parts were replaced by a synthesizer piped in from another room. Overnight, Leonard Bernstein's lush score, extensively measured a masterpiece of American performing arts, went partly mechanical, manipulated by an engineer whose job is to trick audiences into thinking they are hearing the real thing. In interviews, Steven Sondheim has sadly suggested that musicals including his own tend to date rather rapidly. PCPA Theaterfest’s extremely moving new production of West Side Story, which opens its three-week run in Solvang Friday night, July 30, indicates he may be wrong about that. This reworking of Romeo and Juliet, set on the streets of New York City in the 1950s, was created by composer Leonard Bernstein, director/choreographer Jerome Robbins, writer Arthur Laurents and young lyricist Sondheim over a half-century ago. But in the hands of director/choreographer Michael Jenkinson, it feels amazingly fresh and urgent.
The touring production of the smash hit Broadway revival of West Side Story will launch this fall The North American tour will kick off at The Fisher Theatre in Detroit, MI, in October. Further cities, venues and casting for the tour will be announced at a later date. The new Broadway cast recording of West Side Story won the 2010 Grammy Award as Best Musical Show Album at the Jan. 31 Grammy Awards, celebrating excellence in the recording industry. The Producers of the Tony-nominated Broadway revival of West Side Story had two reasons to celebrate this week. Not only did the production at the Palace Theatre break the theatre's box-office record two weeks in a row, but two of the show's stars have renewed their contracts well into 2010. The hit Broad way Revival of West Side Story, showing at the Regal Theatre next month, promises to be one of the best summer productions yet from Minehead Amateur Theatrical Association. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, its timeless story of love and hate is set among rival immigrant gangs on New York's West Side. With lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a memorable score by Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story changed the face of musical theatre forever. Directed by Sarah Jane Cross with choreography by Lorraine Ahern and musical direction by Paul Doolan, this promises to be a lively and energetic production featuring a cast who will show performances with their talent and passion.
