One of the greatest comics artists of all time is George Pérez. His influence completely changed the Teen Titans for the better.
The Teen Titans originally started out as a team of sidekicks. Robin was joined by the sidekicks of heroes like Aquaman, Flash and Green Arrow. The Teen Titans comics were popular for a while, but eventually faded away.
However, two incredibly talented men saved the Teen Titans from falling into obscurity. Writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez came around and changed the Teen Titans in the 1980's. The problem with the original Teen Titans team is that it was an entire team of sidekicks. Changes had to be made in order to make the Teen Titans be more than just the younger counterparts of adult superheroes. Dick Grayson, better known as Robin the boy wonder, became Nightwing. As Nightwing, he was able to be a true superhero and leader instead of just being a sidekick.
Another big change came from new members. Instead of just using sidekicks, some new heroes were brought in. Beast Boy, who was originally a member of the Doom Patrol, was brought into the team. Also, some new heroes were created, including Cyborg, Starfire and Raven. These three new characters became incredibly important additions to the DC universe. Starfire eventually became a romantic interest for Nightwing. As for Cyborg, he became a very important source of representation. He went on to become a member of the Justice League.
Then there's Raven. George Pérez might not have directly created Raven, but he was undeniably important in getting her developed. As the artist, George Pérez was in-charge of making the Teen Titans as good as they do. He co-created several great heroes and villains that have go on to become icons of pop culture.
Raven is one of my absolute favorite superheroes. Since she's not the protagonist of a franchise, I haven't gotten as many opportunities to talk Raven as much as I want to. However, I think it's time that I really explain why the character of Raven means so much to me.
Raven was the daughter of the demon Trigon. Because of that, she was destined to be an evil demon, but she went against her destiny and in this case, going against destiny and what her father wanted was a good thing. Also, unlike other characters who act moody and anti-social, her reason for being so cold and distant is entirely justified because she has to keep her emotions under control to keep her powers under control. If her powers were fully unleashed, she could possibly take down any JL member, even Superman, but she has to work hard every single day to keep her emotions and powers under control, which gives her a compelling weakness and conflict and keeps her from being too overpowered. Like Batman, she's a character that can work in both serious and comedic contexts. For all the reasons mentioned above, she fits serious, emotional stories very well, but Teen Titans Go! managed to make her work under comedic situations and even make her have a cute side, including a secret love for unicorn cartoons and toys.
Out of all of the members of the Teen Titans, Raven is the one that I built the strongest connection to. She's a moody, gothic character, but unlike other moody, gothic characters, she's isn't a shallow, superficial person. She has to stay moody and calm in order to keep her powers from going out of control. However, when she does show her true emotions, she's a very compassionate, sympathetic and likable character.
Raven was a character that originally wasn't a household name. However, that changed in the 2000's. In the early 2000's, there was a Teen Titans animated show that was a huge success. To this day, it has a strong, passionate fanbase. The show helped Beast Boy, Cyborg, Starfire and Raven grow large fanbases. In 2013, a more kid-friendly version of the show, called Teen Titans Go!, was released. Although the show has gotten mixed reception, I personally find it to be a hilarious show. There's also an adult live-action Teen Titans show, that premiered in the late 2010's, called Titans.
The Teen Titans franchise is full of great character designs. That's because of the brilliant, creative work of George Pérez. He made each hero and villain look distinct, colorful and appealing.
Marv Wolfman and George Pérez actually got to appear in Teen Titans Go!. In the show, they voiced themselves. They even got to have a conversation with the Teen Titans.
Thanks to the popularity of the Teen Titans shows, George Pérez's legacy lives on. He helped create so many great heroes and villains. He's one of the most influential comics artists, as well as one of my personal favorite artists. His brilliant contributions will continue to leave a strong, powerful impact on the world of DC Comics.
