Black Adam is a DC Comics film that is the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as the title character.
Black Adam is a character that was known for being one of the main enemies of Shazam in the comics. Although he was portrayed as a villain in his earliest appearances, Black Adam later gained somewhat of a reputation as an anti-hero in later years. Instead of having Black Adam show up as the villain of the Shazam film, Black Adam was given his own film.
In the film, Black Adam was a powerful person that lived in Kahndaq thousands of years ago. Kahndaq has been taken over by the villainous Intergang, but nobody has been coming to the rescue. However, when Black Adam is awakened, he starts protecting Kahndaq from Intergang. Black Adam's violent ways of dealing with enemies leads to a team of superheroes coming after him. The superhero team, which is called the Justice Society of America, consists of Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Cyclone and Atom Smasher. The Justice Society of America see Black Adam as a threat, but the people Kahndaq see him as a hero. Black Adam and the superheroes will have to learn to get along, so they can stop a very dangerous threat.
Black Adam is a film that's advertised as an anti-hero film. It even makes it seem like Black Adam might be a villain. However, the writing of the film does a good job of giving Black Adam a strong background and moments of humanity. Black Adam isn't pure evil, and the Justice Society of America aren't perfect. The morality of the characters is handled with lots of maturity and complexity.
The film gives Black Adam enough flaws to make him seem dangerous, but it also gives him enough humanity to keep him from being unlikable. Dwayne Johnson has made a career out of playing charismatic heroes. Black Adam gives him an opportunity to play a character that's not a traditional hero. Black Adam's bond and loyalty to the people of Kahndaq help make Black Adam a more sympathetic character than I thought he would be.
Out of the members of the Justice Society of America, I was already familiar with Doctor Fate and Hawkman. They are both underrated characters that I have been wanting to see more of for a long time. Thankfully, this film gives both characters plenty to do. Doctor Fate serves as an experienced mentor who is a powerful, charming and entertaining hero. Hawkman serves as a rival to Black Adam and a loyal friend to Doctor Fate. The film gives understandable reasons for Black Adam and Hawkman to be at odds with one another. I was less familiar with Cyclone and Atom Smasher, but both characters were charming, fun additions to the film.
The villain of the film has been mocked for being bland and uninteresting. I won't spoil who the villain of the film is. I will say that although the villain isn't the most original or exciting character, he does have an intimidating design and he serves his purpose. The film also features Amanda Waller, the boss of the Suicide Squad. Although she doesn't have a huge role, she does serve an important purpose.
Black Adam is a film that has a very big budget. It's easy to understand why the budget was so big, because the action scenes are beautiful and are a lot of fun to watch. Seeing Black Adam in action scenes with the Justice Society of America is an epic experience that adds a lot to the film.
If you see the film, make sure you watch the scene that's after the credits. I won't say what happens, but I will say that it made me smile with excited glee.
Black Adam was a character I only knew a little bit about before seeing the film. However, the Black Adam film helped me know and appreciate the character a lot more. It's an exciting action film that has strong superheroes, good acting, an intriguing plot and thrilling action.
