Chapter 7

(big lovers quorl between Sam and Sarah)

“She’s a what?” Sarah asked excitedly, leaning over her cup of coffee, sitting in the chair uneasily next to Kay’s bed.

Sam sighed, collecting himself. It had been a long day already, from Castiel suddenly appearing with a possible secret agenda, to learning about the girl in question. Kay Forster was different from most people because of her supernatural gift. She was alone in her curse and the only people who knew about her were all lingering around in her room…including Sarah.

“Kay is an empath.” Sam had repeated the second time, running his fingers through his thick dark hair. “That means she can absorb the feelings and emotions of everyone in this hospital…possibly farther than here.”

Sarah glared at the tall yet dashing young man. “Uh ha and your friend over there is an angel.” She added uncertainly pointing over at Castiel next to the window with closed blinds.

“Yes.” He said again. Sam was just as baffled as Dean to see both young women in the room taking everything so easily. Any normal person would have called them liars or just plain crazy. But not Sarah Blake, not since the first time she came into the Winchesters lives and assisted them on a hunt. Of all people Sam and Dean met on their jobs, Sarah was the most open to what really lurked in the darkness. “But you can’t tell anyone…technically you probably shouldn’t even know any of this.”

“Well that’s tough because I do now!” she lashed, looking from Sam to her friend. “Actually…I seem to recall that time with a certain haunted portrait of a psycho little girl who tried to kill us.” Sarah paused briefly setting her glass down on the table. “Sam, please don’t shut me out.”

“I’m just trying to protect you.” Sam said roughly, “With everything you already know about my brother and me… what we do…it could put both you and Kay at risk.”

Sarah glared at him, slightly chewing on her lip. He knew that look. Sam could already smell the tension growing in the room and staring back at his sort of-old flame’s fiery rhinestones eyes, he knew she was about to put him in his place. Dean was even aware that scrapping with Sarah would just get him chewed out. She was not one to take anyone’s crap.

“And it’s like I told you before,” she spat, getting up from her chair. “I could walk down the street tomorrow and get hit by a bus. You can’t protect me from everything Sam…including this.... What’s happening now… I’m a part of it, whether you like it or not.”

The heated discussion was evolving more into an argument, which meant increasing discomfort for Kay. It was hard enough just mentally blocking out all the suffering of the other patients in the hospital, but now she had to deal with this unnecessary crap? Dean’s wary eyes followed the empath girl, hugging her tiny arms around her body, struggling to console herself. He was starting to feel irritated listening to Sam and Sarah squabble.

“Sarah you’re as much in the dark about all this as the rest of us,” Sam barked while Sarah approached him defensively. “We don’t know what’s going to happen with Kay or what’s really convincing those people to kill themselves! No, I don’t think you realize what you’re getting yourself into… We shouldn’t have involved you, it’s too dangerous.”

“That’s bull!” Sarah scoffed. “You didn’t think it was so dangerous when I helped you exorcise a killer ghost!”

“This is different!”

“How is it different?” she argued.

Sam shook his head bitterly. “Well because it just is!”

Sarah had to almost contain to the urge to slap him across the jaw. She was so fed up with his emotional baggage and hero complex and it hadn’t even been that long since the Winchesters arrived into New York City to take her friend’s case.

“This is so typical you!” Sarah huffed, eyes piercing like knives into Sam’s heart. “First chance anyone has to make a connection… and you just bail or shut down. Tell me why that is Sam? Or why you never bothered to talk to me?”

“I was on the road with my brother, risking my life day in and day just to keep the world safe!” Sam screamed. Internally he felt sick shouting at Sarah like this, but how else could he make her understand? Both of them were so worked up to even notice Kay rocking steadily back and forth, covering her ears. “I told you how complicated my life was, Sarah! Doing the things that I do everyday doesn’t exactly include room for a white picket fence!”

“Will the two of you just shut up!” Dean exclaimed, stepping between his brother and Sarah.

He’d been quiet for too long, watching Kay nearly convulse because of all the noise. “Look at that girl over there Sammy. She almost died in this hospital because of what she is! Kay’s been sitting there the whole time listening to you two fight worse than a pair of 2 yr-olds! ” For the first time in a while, he’d never felt so disappointed in Sam’s behavior and this didn’t include the issues they left back at the motel. “Do you want her to have another attack because both of you can’t get your shit together?”

Sam shamefully pursed his lips, lowering his soulful eyes to the ground. “No, you’re right Dean… I’m sorry.”

“We have a job to do remember, and we don’t have time for a marriage counselor, save that crap for the soap operas because this…right now is real!” he vitally informed his brother, squeezing his shoulder firmly.

“I know!” Sam agreed heavily.

Castiel decided to weigh in on the conversation seeing as how it was going nowhere. “I think we should be more concerned about what to do with Kay. For the last few hours or so I’ve been getting these feelings of something coming… I don’t know what yet but you can bet that this girl’s life is at stake.”

“Do you know where it’s coming from, Cas?” asked Dean.

“No…but it unnerves me to think that a girl as innocent as Kay could possess such critical empathic powers.” He carefully glanced at the young woman wrapped in her bed-sheets. The angel knew she was terrified of what was happening to her, something she couldn’t prevent for long. “As I said before a normal empath isn’t supposed to be exposed to the amount of pain that she feels all the time. Whatever is coming…it might come after her.”

“Don’t worry we won’t let it happen,” Sam swiftly assured the angel.

“I haven’t known much since I’ve been assigned back on earth to observe Kay’s abilities. Since the events of Michael and Lucifer, I’ve been under strict protocol to refrain from questioning any order of the lord.” The stunning blue eyes of his vessel were grave. “If this girl is connected to an oncoming threat… I don’t know if I’ll either protect her or…”

“Don’t you dare say it you bastard!” Dean snarled, lip curling back enough to expose his teeth. “Cas I don’t give a rat’s ass about your damn protocol! Any son of a bitch that dares to lay a finger on this girl is gonna be sucking on holy water, salt, lead or whatever I need to send this bitch back to hell!”

“Dean… we don’t know if this girl is a threat or not yet, she’s an unusual empath.” Added the angel, squinting his eyes at the two brothers. “For right now I suggest we look into finding a safe place to hide Kay… just until…” his attention suddenly became vacant, spacing out of awareness…away from the four humans occupying the room with him.

“Cas what is it?” Sam asked, touching the angel’s shoulder.

Castiel blinked quickly, almost as if his soul returned to his body.

“But… this can’t be right.” He scoffed confusingly, rubbing his fingers up his forehead.

“What’s the matter?” Dean demanded impatiently.

Disoriented, the angel replied, “He’s alive. You’re brother Adam is alive.”

The anxiety surged through Sam and Dean, all evidence of their tension vanished from their faces. Their brother was alive. He was back on earth which meant they needed to find him quickly. As they bolted for the door when their angel had given them explicated directions on where to find him, Dean suddenly glanced back at Kay and Sarah. If he and Sam left who would keep them safe?

“Wait we can’t leave Kay alone.” Dean commented, shoving his keys back into his pocket.

“Well what about Cas?” Sam referred to the angel, who reluctantly reminded the younger Winchester.

“I have to report back as of now. But I’ll return as quickly as I can. You both need to find your brother Sam… before the other angels detect him.”
