Chapter 9

(This chapter continues after Sam and Dean had picked up Adam from the middle of the road and is heading back in the city. The following also contains course language)

“How the hell do you know about Kay Forster?” Dean stressed at his teenage brother in the backseat, watching the traffic ahead of them, “Or what I really wanna know is…what the hell does Michael want with her?”

“Well jeez, if I really knew anything about that would I be sitting here wondering that myself?” Adam scolded his older brother at the stirring wheel, sulking against his seat. Just a few hours ago he woke up laying butt naked in the middle of the highway until Sam and Dean came scurrying to his aid. The only fragments of his memory involving Michael were when he was given explicit instructions to track down some girl with his brothers, but what confused him was what he was going to do when he found this girl. “How do you guys know her anyway?”

“We met her a couple days ago working a job,” Sam replied, tapping his fingers by the window and glancing to see if Adam was still conscious. Learning that he was somehow sharing a body with a powerful Archangel had Sam worried. What if this was trap Michael set for Dean and he….all he could do was wait. “A friend of mine called us over to New York so we could help her with her situation. Did Michael say anything else important about Kay?”

Adam shrugged. “Just that I have to find her before all hell breaks loose. Why?”

Dean silently glanced at Sam, critical of the idea over explaining the truth about Kay. Although the last thing he wanted was to have trust issues with their youngest brother, the Winchesters were debating if Michael was calling on the shots when it came to Adam’s latest resurrection.

“Guys what’s with the uncomfortable silence” “Adam said impatiently. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

Sam sighed at Dean, reluctant to hold back any information from the fiery teenager. “I’m gonna tell him.”

Dean’s jaw clenched irritably. “Not a good idea, what if Michael’s listening right now?”

“He’s not because I’m in control like I already told you!” Adam snapped, leaning closer between his brothers. Dean pressed his palm on the wheel flexing his fingers attentively.

“And how are we supposed to know that?” Dean commented briskly. “First Cas heads for the hills because of some nasty son-of-a-bitch and now you tell us that you’ve got heaven’s most valuable bastard tucked away in your meat suit. If that doesn’t smell worse than my gym socks, then I don’t know what does.”

Adam scrutinized his older brother, squeezing the leather of the seat beneath his fingers. “I already told you it’s me dumbass! How many times do I have to say it before you believe me? Now cut the shit and tell me what the hell’s going on?”

“God, I’m really glad to have you back.” snarled the older Winchester sarcastically.

Although Dean had to give the smart-ass kid credit; he was stubborn, cynical and refused to be screwed around with, a straight up Winchester minus the last name. But he was in no mood to be told off by a 19yr old ex-med student with a tough-guy complex. The tension was already thick between Adam and Dean so Sam decided to play the middle guy before a brawl happened while they were all cooped up in the car.

“Okay just cool it guys, alright,” Sam spoke up defensively, then he inhaled focusing his attention on the reluctant occupant in the backseat. “Kay is an empath…she has the power to receive anyone’s feelings or emotions any time and place. Dean and I are trying to help her control this ability before it hurts her again.”

Stunned, the teenager warily crossed his arms over his chest. Michael never mentioned anything about this girl having special powers. The whole idea made him just as suspicious as his brothers were about an Archangel with a dangerously hidden agenda.

“So she’s like a psychic or something? Like you?”

Sam shook his head immediately. The idea of someone as innocent as Kay Forster being remotely similar to him was out of the question.

“No, not like me,” he stated crucially, “What I had…it was dangerous and could be used as a weapon for killing. Even when I thought I was in control it took me over… But trust me it’s not like an empath.” He paused for a minute blinking back the severe pain in his eyes. “Unlike normal empaths, Kay’s ability causes her insufferable pain in a physical sense… She uncontrollably absorbs emotion from people sort of like a-

-like a human sponge, only messier!” Dean finished hitting the gas pedal at the next green light. “Kay had an attack at the hospital where we left her and it almost killed her.”

Sam sensed fear for Kay Forster’s safety in Dean’s voice as he said that. “But it didn’t!” he assured the uneasy younger brother. “She’s fine, Sarah would’ve called if Kay was in trouble. Dean you need to relax.”

“Yah well I can relax once we make it back to the hospital,” he answered hollowly, eyes strained with frustration. Each breath Dean took, Sam could pick up a hint of swearing. “We shouldn't have left her alone Sammy, I don’t like it.”

Sam glanced back at Adam who was surprisingly had a curious grin on his face. “Has Dean got some kind of crush on this chic or something?”

“Shut up.” Dean bellowed. “Now what aren’t you telling us about Michael, huh? What does he gain by springing you up from the pit?”

“Your guess is as good as mine dude,” Adam bluntly replied, scratching his jaw-line. “To be honest I wasn’t looking forward to being pulled back in a devil’s bargain just to keep my ass out of hell. I’d rather be a mutilated ghoul’s carcass than some angel’s errand bitch-boy.”

Dean snickered. “Can’t argue with you there.”

“We just need to figure out what Cas meant back at the hospital,” Sam added. “Maybe Adam’s resurrection, my resurrection, those random suicides and Kay’s abilities are all connected back to Michael.” He turned back to the teenager. “Think, can you try to remember if he mentioned anything else about Kay or if… he knew something was going to happen?”

“Look,” Adam huffed, “Before I remembered waking up in this shit-hole of a world, he said this girl was very valuable to him, that I needed to find her before the others do. That’s it, it’s all I know. Son-of-a-bitch didn’t even tell me she was an empath.”

Sam’s expression was grueling, eye’s pierced with suspicion. “What others?”

“Hell if I know! But if Cas thinks this girl could in trouble…I wouldn’t put it passed Michael either.”

Suddenly Dean’s cell was blaring off the cup-holder. Without hesitating he flipped it open with his free hand while he stirred with the other, nearly swerving off the road.

“Yeah!”

“Dean! Dean please you have to come get me! Please!”

The older Winchester nearly had a panic attack listening to the familiar frightened voice on the other end. He gripped the phone tighter.

“Kay? What’s wrong?”

“Oh my god, Dean I’m so scared!” she cried. “I don’t know what’s happening…” her voice was breaking. “There’s people everywhere…they’re killing everyone, it hurts...the screaming I can’t take it!”

“Take it easy, calm down,” Dean carefully instructed the frantic girl over the line, “Where are you now Kay?”
“I ran into one of the offices. None of the other phones were working in the building,” she sobbed, struggling to hold herself together. “But they’re out there….trying to…please help me please!”

Sam was growing impatient, clamping his hand on his brother’s shoulder. “What’s she saying Dean? What about Sarah?”

“Where’s Sarah, isn’t she with you?” Dean’s voice was getting harsher, indulging Sam’s request.

“I don’t know, she disappeared shortly after it started,” Kay was petrified, swallowing hard and sniffling into Dean’s ear. She was alone and helpless, which was exactly what the stubborn older Winchester didn’t want. “I can’t find her! Oh god there’s blood, it’s everywhere, there’s blood everywhere!”

If he had the ability to do it, Dean would be there in a heartbeat to rescue Kay but the gridlocked traffic prevented him. He gritted his teeth, biting down on his tongue trying desperately trying to keep calm for the empathic girl’s sake. If she was facing this threat alone, he was going to be on her shoulder the whole time instructing her on how to survive it.

“Kay…listen to me alright,” he began, stress throbbing in the vein of his neck. “You need to find a way out of that hospital, okay? Now…what’s attacking those people, do you know?”

“I don’t know what’s wrong with any of them,” she sobbed bitterly, “Just before I came in here, one of them attacked me…tried to bite me… And his face was… it was like he wasn’t alive, Dean.”

Instantly a horrific feeling came over Dean, blocking his urge to breathe normally. Sam and Adam vigorously waited for their brother to fill them in on the commotion with the empath girl, observing every form of tension formulating in his green eyes to his entire face. Dean knew what was attacking those people in the hall, what was trying to hurt Kay and Sarah… though he dared not say it out load.

“Okay…I know what they are,” he said solemnly. “You’re gonna have to find a heavy blunt object or something sharp to destroy the brain. It’s the only way to stop them, Kay. And whatever you do, don’t let them bite you!”

“Please help me!” she cried, “Please I’m really scared!” Suddenly there was a loud crash in the background as Kay screamed. “Oh God!”

Dean didn’t hesitate, speeding through the traffic heart pounding the minute he found an opening. “Kay! Kay, just hang in there baby we’re coming to get you!”

“Dean…hel…” the other end was breaking up too much before the line went dead. Dean couldn’t bring himself to pull the phone away from his ear, he had to get there. Kay was smack in the midst of all the carnage, prey to those hungry evil undead bastards and Dean was gonna be damned if he let anything happen to her.

“Dean what’s wrong!” Sam snapped excitably, pulling the cell away his brother’s hand. “Is she alright? Is Sarah, what the hell’s going on?”

“Zombies,” Dean blurted unexpectedly, “They’re loose all over the hospital. I don’t know how it happened but…as soon as I get over there I’m gonna slaughter each and everyone one of those suckers so help me god.”

“Well what about Sarah?”
“She doesn’t know where she is, they got separated. Sarah could be dead for all we know Sam!”

“Okay I was wrong,” Adam stated plainly, “I’m in hell already. Could this night suck even more?”

“I’m gonna start throwing punches if the two of you don’t shut your pie-holes!” Dean warned his brothers, who were both taken aback.

“Dean calm down!” Sam lashed. “I wanna get there and save Kay as much as you do but this is not the time to be a loose-cannon. I know you're on edge right now but biting our heads off isn’t going to help anyone!”

The older Winchester rubbed his eyes irritably. “I know and I’m sorry but we promised to protect this girl Sammy. And I don’t care if I have to drive over every single car in this damn traffic to get to her! I’m not letting her die, over my dead body!”

Just as the impala pulled into a parking lot of screaming civilians rushing out of all the exits to Little Falls Hospital, Sam and Adam were already critical about the situation while Dean erratically grabbed his guns from the trunk in that back, loading them with bullets.

Sam didn’t want Adam going into the hospital when he wasn’t prepared to handled himself like Dean and he were. They’d trained for years, all the knowledge was embedded in their skin, flowing through their veins. So the teenager reluctantly waited in the car, feeling useless and holding a hand-gun his taller brother had given him for protection. Just when he thought he’d get a decent spot of zombie violence…Adam was told to stay behind and to keep the car running.

Cynically shaking his head, watching people running away from the building like a frantic swam of ants, Adam popped over the seat to play one of Dean’s tapes for entertainment. He hated feeling like a wimp, what would the girls think?

“It a shame you can’t find something more productive to do with you time,” said a vacant firm voice.

Adam jerked his head off the backseat, glancing in the rearview mirror, he knew who it was.

“Well aren’t we full of surprises?” he shot back at his reflection. “I was beginning to think I was alone in my head but this just keeps getting more messed up.”

The expression on Michael’s face as he glared back at the cocky teenager through his own blue eyes was cold and persistent. Adam could hide it with all the mockery and sarcasm he had but being countered by an unpredictable ancient being, able to engulf his body into ashes, made his throat close up. He could feel the Archangel’s presence lingering beneath his skin…tugging on his soul for control of the body.

“Your brothers won’t be able to save that girl in time Adam,” Michael informed his reluctant vessel. “If you let me gain control of this body, I can help them.”

“Screw that! I remember what happened the last time you possessed me you spineless dick!”

The Archangel was relentless. “We don’t have time to waste, everyone in that hospital will die should you refuse to release me.”

Adam shook his head. “Save it! I’m not letting you screw with my head this time.” Then he folded his arms, clutching the gun protectively. “And why the hell are we sharing the same space here? I want answers now!”

Michael chuckled emotionlessly. “That’s an empty threat and one I’m not the least intimidated by. And as for why we’re stuck like this…I haven’t the slightest clue.” He paused. “My powers have slightly weakened since we’ve been resurrected back on earth…but I’m still capable to help your brother’s find Kayleigh Forster if…you let me through.”

Adam groaned irritably, clenching his jaw. The idea of this freak running loose in his body was about the farthest low he’d ever sink. He knew his brothers could handle themselves, why would he risk sending in something that tried to kill them the last time it possessed him. Beating around the bush was one thing but choices like this were painstaking.

“How do I know I can trust you not to kill them?” Adam asked impatiently.

“I give my word I won’t harm either of them, but this is girl is very important Adam,” Michael said plainly. “The infection is already spreading in the hospital and pretty soon it’ll be all over the streets… I can get Kayleigh and your brothers out safely if you’ll let me. What other choice do you have besides your impending death?”

Decisions, decisions…. Adam Milligan was once again caught up in something he never planned to be involved in. His brothers were trapped inside…the girl they were looking for was inside there too… and if he didn’t act now they could all die… But was unleashing a psychotic ultimate being, infested in his body, really the best solution for the Winchesters?

Chapter 18

(warning this chapter contains frightening scenes and scenes of violence)

Adam had been pacing the house for the past five minutes, once in a while pausing to sneak a peek out the window in case of unnatural intruders. The only things he kept close were his revolver secure in the waistline of his jeans and the cell phone that Sam had given to him earlier that day for emergencies. He had to give his brothers credit for covering all bases while assuming their little venture out to Clifton Ridge, especially since they’d reluctantly put Adam in charge of keeping everyone safe back at...
