I said it before and I’ll say it again, I love No More Heroes, from the characters, to the combat, to the overworld. And one of the things that makes this game what it is are the bosses in it. The 10 Ranked assassins of the United Assassins Association are some of the craziest and most thought provoking bosses I have seen in video games. Sure, they may not be as insane to fight or as insanely well detailed and designed like a Bayonetta or Devil May Cry boss, but how they behave, what they have to say, and what they do make them all the more interesting. How they fight, what tricks they pull, and their significance to the story make them all the more interesting. So today, I will be discussing and ranking the bosses of No More Heroes… The first one. The second game will have a different list entirely. Note that this is my opinion, and that the bosses you may like or dislike may be different than what I see them as. With that being said, let the bloodshed begin (Oh, that was terrible! Never let me do that again!)

10: Shinobu

I have to admit, having played the games more, and probably because I’ve become an even bigger loser, I have grown fond of Shinobu, mainly because of the second game… personality wise. Gameplay wise, playing as her in NMH2 is terrible, awkward, and annoying, and fighting her in the first game is utter hell. You have to fight her in a small, enclosed area filled with wooden pillars. These pillars can either help you hide from Shinobu’s attacks or become a huge detriment, getting in your way when dodging or not letting you lock onto Shinobu. The game will only allow you to perform a wrestling move or hit her after a weapon clash (When you win one, I should add), only when the game feels like it. Sometimes, you’ll get to hit her, and other times, she’ll jump out of the way. You can only get some good hits on her after she does an unblockable attack, but only barely. And when she fires a Sonic Sword, you’ll never know if she’ll fire one or several that may or may not kill you when you get struck. But the biggest flaw, the one thing that guarantees this fight as terrible, aside from her insane health, the terrible pillars, and her ability to dodge on a whim, is her insta-kill attack. It looks no different from her other attacks and she can use it several times in a row if she really wants to. The fight can eventually become a boring task of just waiting for her to hit and can become a trial of you dodging her constantly in fear of getting one shotted. It honestly rivals that of the window in the sequel… You know what I’m talking about. And of course, you have to deal with her taunting. It’s a pain in this game as much as it is in the sequel, but less here since her taunts don’t get you killed. They just get old fast. I guess the bright side is that… Well… she walks slow, giving you enough time to recharge the Beam Katana… and… the music…. I got nothing. This fight sucks.

9: Speed Buster

I gotta be honest, I much prefer the music in this fight more than the actual boss it plays for. Speed Buster is an elderly woman with a laser cannon, and while that sounds pretty silly, as you would expect in this game, that makes you wonder, just what kinds of fights can you expect with this boss? Simple. Run down a long stretch of road while hiding from her laser cannon and fighting grunts as you try to make your way up to “fight” her. It's so boring, I honestly don’t know what more I can say about it. I can get what they were going for, trying to make her appear as death and how the only way to avoid death is to stay out of it’s path, but sometimes, you gotta sacrifice a bit of symbolism for some gameplay. This barely counts as a boss fight, really. It feels more like an extended level to me. It’s just a long stretch of road that you have to run down until you make it to Speed Buster. Hell, when you get to the telephone pole that you have to cut down and fall onto Speed Buster, at that point, the fight is already done. Now you don’t even have to worry about the laser coming at you. At that point, you just run, no enemies, no threat, nothing. It is incredibly dull and boring. And remember, this has one of the best songs in the game for this part. And also, you cannot use the game's first Beam Katana for this fight. It does not have the battery life necessary to block the laser and you will die if you get caught in that laser just a few times. This fight demands that you purchase at least one upgrade. I mean, I did that before, but still.

8: Death Metal

Okay, at this point, I can stop hating the bosses. From here on, I really do like the bosses. And one of the lesser greats is the game's first boss, Death Metal. Now, like many first bosses before him, Death Metal gets the job done as the first boss. He sets up what you are to expect and does a good job. But after that, preferably when you get to New Game Plus, he is less of a boss and more of another enemy with just a larger health bar. His attacks are predictable, rarely change, and are just simple to block, and even if you do get hit, no worries, because you have all the health upgrades in New Game Plus, and a stronger Beam Katana, and if you do lose health, you’ve got a free health bonus in the boss room. Now, that’s not to say Death Metal doesn’t try to be interesting. He certainly does try when he tries to psyche you out with the addition of two clones of himself, but they are just weaker versions of him that can be killed easy. Still, A for effort. I do like Death Metal, though. Not for his fight, very much, but more of his character, being a weary old man who has grown tired of killing, a symbolic character to foreshadow what Travis will find at the end of his journey, but Travis, blinded by the urge to be number one, ignores him and proceeds to fight him anyway. Maybe not the most amazing fight in the series, but he certainly does manage to get the franchise on a pretty good start.

7: Destroyman

Okay, so the first three bosses, Death Metal, Shinobu, and another that will be mentioned after on, were pretty tame. Not normal, but not totally insane. And then Destroyman comes in. Destroyman is a parody on the superheroes, who use violence as a means to justify their acts, and is clearly not a very stable guy. He’s also a dirty cheater, attacking Travis behind his back, using a handshake to electrify him, and even when begging for mercy, tries to gun Travis down with his machine gun nipples…. Yes, I just said that. That is a real attack from a real boss in a real game that you can play in the real world. Anyway, moving on. The fight with Destroyman has him throw out numerous attacks, all starting with Destroy. He can electrify you, smash the ground, fire a ball of energy at you, fire lasers at you, and his most devastating attack, launch a powerful laser beam out of his crotch… Did I mention Destroyman was weird? Now, as fun as the fight is in the beginning, it becomes way too easy after that. His attacks are predictable, and can easily be avoided, and he is also stunned easily, allowing you to perform wrestling moves on him without hesitation. But I still can’t help but enjoy fighting this guy every time. Maybe it’s just how bizarre Destroyman is that I enjoy fighting him again and again. And hey, I guess they knew how easy he was, because they made him a million times less fun in the sequel. Way to go!

6: Holly Summers

I have to say, as much as I enjoy the symbolism and the turning point for Travis’ character around this boss fight, Holly’s fight is… okay. Just okay. Her arena, a beach, is filled with hidden sand traps that you can fall into. Once inside, you have to swing the Wii remote, or Nunchuck as fast as you can before Holly throws a grenade in and blows you up. At first it’s fun, but after the seventh hole, it starts to get irritating. And easy to get out of. Holly has other attacks too, like launching rockets out of her robot leg. I don’t know what military equipment she has in there, but I don’t think anyone can fit that many rockets in there. Anyway, once you know where the holes are, all you have to worry about is just avoiding them and try to beat her. After that, it’s about the same. But make sure you watch out for her most devastating attack, where she shoots… more rockets… Horrifying! Okay, so Holly’s fight is just okay. Nothing amazing, nothing atrocious. But it’s her character that I enjoy more. A soldier who follows the code of the samurai to the letter, she believes that assassin's, no matter what, must die when defeated, either by the opponents hands or by their own. Because of this, we only get to know her name, and that is all, and I think that works in her favor. And this sets the bar for other assassins in the future to improve the character of Travis, especially in 2. And because of that, Holly’s okay fight becomes even better.

5: Letz Shake

Letz Shake is a giant robot piloted by a German punk rocker. The fight with him is- Oh, he’s killed by Henry… Moving on.

5: Dark Star

The Rank 1 assassin of No More Heroes, while being kind of a Darth Vader reject, is actually quite a fun boss fight with his- Oh goddamnit, he dies too!

5: Jeane

Okay, for real this time, this is the real boss. Jeane is where the game’s revelations and plot twists all come into play. Jeane is actually (SPOILER) and the reason why she and Travis meet now is because (SPOILER) and this was all (SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER) to kill Jeane. Good thing you all understand that, or everything would have been a confusing mess. The fight with Jeane is a simple but very atmospheric one at that. She’s very hard to hit, being able to dodge your swings unless you strike her at just the right time. She can hit you with a barrage of punches, mixed with an unblockable counter attack, and then mix it up with an unblockable kick. The more you get into the fight, the harder her kicks become to dodge, as she throws out multiple when she is almost done with. The area you are in also starts to get smaller and smaller the more you lower her health down, and makes it very uncomfortable when you are this close, which I find to be so much fun. And don’t try to use a wrestling move on her. It’s a trap. If you do, she will counter it and then break your arm. It’s better to just attack her blindly. Being one of the most dark characters in the game, with her backstory and motives, as well as part of the games major turning point, just makes her all the more interesting to me.

4: Harvey Moiseiwitsch Volodarskii

Okay, I think I’ll just stick to calling him Harvey, because that name is a real mouthful. Harvey is a magician and… not really the most interesting of assassins. His fight does bring up Travis’ dead parents, at least in dialogue, and he is a symbolic message of people finding entertainment in violence, but aside from that, he’s a pretty average character. His fight, on the other hand, is filled with personality. If you want to win me over with a boss fight immediately, you need to change the rules on their head. Make the player learn what to do, change things, and make them confused, but capable of besting the foe before them. Bosses like Psycho Mantis do this perfectly. Harvey does this as well. Harvey can change your weapon to a useless wand that does no damage, forcing you to avoid his attacks, he can shoot doves at you, and turn the screen upside down. The most notable thing is his one hit kill move, where he will trap you in a box and you must try to escape it. And hey, unlike Shinobu, it gives you a chance to get away and when you mess up, it’s not the fault of shit design. The box trick can happen several times, and will get harder to escape from the more it happens, but it sure is a joy to best him. Some may get tired of the screen reverse trick, but I love it when he does it. It makes you fight against the odds more than before and allows you to feel better when you beat him. Plus this leaves him open for a free hit, so I’m not complaining.

3: Dr. Peace

Of all of the bosses with the most interesting character with the most okay fight, Dr. Peace fits this category the most. Lets just say that bosses in the No More Heroes universe with guns are most likely going to be okay at best and Million Gunman at worst. The fight with Dr. Peace is one of the okay ones. It’s nothing amazing, at all. In fact, it’s super easy. I can beat Dr. Peace without getting hit once. He just shoots, and shoots, and shoots. That is as far as the combat goes. Run around him, dodge the unblockable attack, and then strike. No changes, no tricks, nothing but run around and attack. I have to say, he may be one of the more disappointing fights. But what I put him at the top for was because of his character. He is by far one of the most interesting and sympathetic bosses in the No More Heroes series. He may look like a typical cowboy cliche gunslinger with golden magnums, but he has tons of personality just oozing out of him. He is singing in an empty stadium, complete by himself. A divorcee with a daughter, he mentions that, because of his lifestyle as an assassin, he can’t find any enjoyment, and that his own daughter can’t even look him in the eyes because of this. His death makes it all the more emotional just because he knows his daughter would prefer him being dead than a killer, and becomes one of the first assassins that Travis actually sympathises with. It doesn’t stop him from going down the road of a killer, mind you, but still, it’s a start. I really do wish that there was more to the fight of Dr. Peace, because his personality is what makes him one of my favorite assassins in the No More Heroes franchise.

2: Bad Girl

This is by far the hardest boss in the entire game, or at least, one of them, along with the final boss, but I still love this fight regardless. Bad Girl has a lot of health that you must knock down, and she has a lot of attacks. Bad Girl is a very simple character. She gets kicks out of beating people for fun, and drinking beer. Not much else other than she may be the symbolic nature of Travis lust of sex and violence combined, especially in the death scene, but were not here to talk about writing. Bad Girl’s fight is filled with many tricks you must remember to best her. She can hit you with a combination of attacks, with sight differences, allowing you to know when to block, dodge, and attack. Some attacks include a swing, multiple strikes, and sending gimps flying at you, which you can knock right back at her, creating a game of tennis. It’s like the fight with Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time only not shit (Yeah, I don’t care!). When she loses enough health, she will set her bat on fire for added damage, as well as an unblockable ground pound and a very bad one hit kill move. Just a warning, do not attack her when she is crying. Thi is mandatory to avoid her one hit kill move. There are different ways she cries, one being a one hit kill and the other being a chance for free hits, but I never take the chance. Screw that. And, a little bonus, her theme song is probably my favorite in the entire game. The challenge of fighting her can go on for a while, but that’s what I love. You have to be ready for anything, and any mistake can trip you up, but the same goes for her. You have to be ready for everything. It’s as equal as it gets, really, and I love that. Some may disagree and say she has no backstory or personality… But hey, Travis Strikes Again introduced the character Bad Dad, Bad Girls father, so maybe that will change.

1: Henry Cooldown

Who the hell else was it going to be? Of course it was going to be Mr. Sir Henry Motherfucker! He was and still is one of my favorite final bosses in video games and I have no plans of changing that. Henry starts out as being this cool rival to Travis, taking one of his kills, and after that, just kind of being out of the picture… Until the end of the game where he saves Travis from an assassination only to fight him in a motel parking lot. The fight is insane as hell. You have to be fast and aggressive to stand a chance against Henry. He attacks fast and fierce. These attacks range from a plethora of energy balls, a rush attack, a spin attack, an insane sword combo, a charged attack where he waits for you to make the first move, and a one hit kill. Yeah, apparently almost every boss has got at least one, but for Henry, it is easy to predict and can be avoided if you’re paying attention. But even if you get hit, you have to admit, it is one of the coolest things ever. Henry is the true final boss of the game, and a hard one to beat, but that just makes him all the more fun and satisfying when you do beat him. And you even get to play as him No More Heroes 2… For one boss fight. Shinobu gets two though… and two whole levels… Sigh! But, regardless of my disappointment, Henry is an amazing boss and perfect riva to Travis. And all I can say is screw Travis for Smash on the Switch, I want Henry for Smash. DLC costume, AT LEAST!

Well, we’ve talked about two anime that I love. So, why don’t we talk about an anime that I cannot stand. Horror anime isn’t like horror movies. There are many different kinds of them that are seen in Japan and they are always so good to watch… most of the time. One instance of them not being that scary (Or that good in general), is a very popular anime that we’ll be looking at today. That anime is Tokyo Ghoul… Already, I can hear people getting angry. (NOTE: I HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA! THIS IS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE WHO HAS ONLY SEEN THE ANIME! DON’T GET ANGRY AT ME,...

After playing the brilliant JRPG that is Chrono Trigger, I am positive that this is my favorite JRPG of all time. The environments are amazing, the story is brilliant, the music is catchy, the combat is fun, and the characters are some of the best I’ve ever seen. I can’t hate a single character from this game. Yeah, imagine that, a JRPG with no hateable characters. And to think that having at least one awful character in a JRPG was mandatory. But, the best characters have to be the main party. Each party member has amazing attacks, and even more amazing stories. So, I want to talk about...

What happened to this channel. Not only did this channel die, but so did my childhood along with it. Honestly, why did this have to happen. Well, for those of you that don't know what I am talking about, I am talking about what was once my favorite cartoon channel, Cartoon Network.
Now, before I talk about the bad, lets go back to the past. October first, 1992, to be exact. It was the year when cartoon network was founded. And they had lots of shows that, I really never watched, because, sadly, I was born in 1999, when people worried about Y2K, and N64 was in its prime. But, there was classic...
