Ok so I am going to try and answer this as best i can (its a hard Q.)....

So usually in writing levels connect, something that happens seemingly meaningless at the start of the story comes back at the end or middle. If you try and find the layers that connect you can cut them (2 or more) out without rupturing the story line.

Planning might also help. If you plan the layers at the start then you don't get the end and have to (try) cut something out. If you plan the layers at the beginning then you also don't have the chance of adding more in from the original idea.

Hope this helps....

Hm, this is a complicated question, because you would go about it differently for each story. Since I don't know anything about your story, I can't give you specific examples.

Sit down and look at what you have, and I mean really look. Is there anything that doesn't add to the conflict, plot, or general story arc?

Also, talk to your teacher. See what he/she thinks is so complex about your stories. What he/she thinks maybe completely different from what you think.
