Chapter Five
A flash of color was momentarily visible through the leaves. Glory stared at where the color was last seen, breathing hard. Something was circling her. A moment later, a cheetah appeared, its long teeth bared. Glory blinked in shock. It couldn’t be! But yet, here it was. The cheetah from the school. There was no other way it could be a different one. The sound of a padded feet hitting the dirt, sounded behind Glory. She whirled the opposite direction. The tiger was stalking toward her, its long tail flicking. There was no doubt left in her mind. These were the two from the school. The advanced on her slowly, mouths open, snarling. They had her surrounded. She watched their stealth and grace as they circled around her. She had always heard that your life flashed before your eyes when you were about to die. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for her. She was painfully aware of every detail. The beauty of the felines, even though they were here to kill her. The curiosity of what the Montez’s really were. She was never going to find out.
The tiger and the cheetah were slowly tightening their circle, getting closer and closer. The cheetah was looking at her with intelligent eyes. Glory did a double take. Blue eyes? Since when did cheetahs have blue eyes? Maybe it was a genetic defect. The Cheetah and tiger were so close now, she could feel the air very faintly brush over her.
The cheetah stopped circling and faced her, looking at her with almost human eyes. This was it. Just as the Cheetah crouched, looking as if it was about to spring, something black and sleek flew through the air. Glory stumbled back a step. A black panther was crouched in between her and the cheetah. The Cheetah was growling, flicking its tail in annoyance. The tiger had left its post behind her to join the Cheetah in front of the black panther. They both looked aggravated, but looked to be backing down. After staring her down for a minute, they turned and disappeared into the dark trees. Glory stared at the panther. It peered back at her with emerald green eyes. A moment later, a iron hand settled on her shoulder again. She whirled to find Aden right behind her. Gabriel and Anna were no where to be seen.
“ Thanks Roslyn. I have her now.” Aden spoke to the panther. Glory stared at him with eyes wide. Who had a panther for a pet these days?
Aden nodded toward the panther. Glory turned to face it again. As she watched, its back legs elongated, and its front legs shrunk slightly. Its silky black fur disappeared to be replaced by human skin. In less than a moment, a girl stood before her. Last to disappear was the ears and the tail. But soon, just an beautiful girl stood there looking back at her. She had pitch black hair that hung to her waste, and the same emerald eyes.
“ Hi! I’m Roslyn Reynolds.” The girl said, taking a step toward Glory. Glory stumbled a step back. This girl was a panther. That panther was actually this girl. Roslyn. She stared at her. She was absolutely gorgeous. She was tall and lean, looking leanly muscled, just like the panther. She was clothed in a tight black jump suit that fit her like a second skin. She had slightly pale skin, but not as pale as Aden’s. Roslyn’s had a healthy blush to her cheeks.
“ Well aren’t you going to introduce us?” Roslyn turned to Aden.
Aden sighed. “Glory Anderson, Roslyn Reynolds. Anna’s best friend, shape shifter and close ally.” Aden said, nodding toward Roslyn.
Glory stumbled back another step. Shape shifter?
“ Its nice to meet you, Glory. We have been waiting for you for a long time.” Roslyn said, smiling warmly.
Glory just stared at her. The word shape shifter kept running through her mind over and over again.
“ You better get back to the others. We will be along shortly.” Aden said. Roslyn smiled.
“ Ill catch you later, Glory.” Roslyn turned and in one fluid motion, black fur erupted over her body. She looked like she was falling face first, but by the time she got close to the ground, she was the magnificent panther, leaping away.
In just a moment, she was out of sight.
“ Wow.” Glory breathed. Aden was looking at her in amusement.
Glory stared at him. He looked perfect. Roslyn looked perfect as well. Glory put two and two together.
“ You are a shape shifter?” Glory asked, taking in his rich curls, golden eyes, and perfect body. A harsh laugh escaped his lips. Aden’s words chilled her to the bone.
“ Oh no. We are something much, much worse.”
