The cold night air whipped around us as we sprinted for our lives, down a desolate narrow alleyway. Gunfire pounded off the walls, the sound never ending. I was towards the back of the group, picking off zombies in the rear. Ellis and Nick were situated at the front while Coach covered the middle. A thin layer of sweat covered my body and my hair was tangled wildly as I ran. The moans and roars of the undead filled the air, as they stalked our every movement. "Die die,my darlin's! Die die die!" Ellis shouted as he ran forwards. I had to hold in a laugh as I continued to follow. Ellis had always been the optimist, his sweet and playful nature being what had attracted me to him. Nick ran alongside him, chuckling slightly. "You got the right idea Ellis." More and more zombies seemed to appear as we fought them off one by one. Coach shot a few in a row and continued running, his sports shirt dampened by sweat. It seemed never ending as the relentless echo of gunfire sounded down the alley. "There's too many! We need to run quicker!" I screamed. Ellis turned around and shot a zombie behind me, grabbing me around the waist swiftly. "Well then let's go!" He broke out into a sprint as Nick and Coach followed suit. My finger was glued to the trigger of my run as a hail of bullets rang out. The zombies started to keep up the pace, keeping no distance behind us. Suddenly, a sickening sound filled the air. A piercing screech pulsed and I was suddenly thrown to the ground,Ellis' grip releasing on me. "ELLIS!" Coach yelled and immediately commenced fire. I glanced up, pushing the hair from my face, to see that Ellis had been pinned down to the floor by a hoodie. The breath was forced from me as I saw a shower of crimson liquid spray through the air. I immediately leaped to my feet and fired, but a crowd of zombies blocked my target. It was in slow motion as I screamed Ellis' name, the flow of blood becoming more apparent as the Hunter tore at him. Ellis cried out in pain and tried to block the slashes, but the razor sharp claws sliced straight through his flesh. A dampness covered my face as the tears started to run, refusing to stop. Ellis turned his head slowly as looked straight into my eyes. I reached out my fingertips, wanting desperately to get to him. His head suddenly dropped to the floor, his eyes wide and his mouth hanging open slightly. Nick fired a shot and it managed to reach the Hunter, entering its skull and killing it instantly. But it was too late. I collapsed to my knees and sobbed, blocking out all the sounds around me. The wind whistled down the alleyway, surrounding me as I cried.
We all stood in front of the wall, our heads bowed in a moment of respect. Ellis' hat lay on the floor, still stained with spatters of blood. My face was still stained with tears, and I shivered slightly as the air grew colder. After paying our respects,Coach bent down and picked up the supplies from the floor,Nick doing the same. "You gonna be ok,kid?" he asked concerned. I took a deep breath and nodded slightly. "I'll be alright...but,do you two mind if I have a moment alone?" Coach gave a nod of his head and walked out of the saferoom door. Nick stared at me for a moment, but then turned around and followed Coach. I stared at Ellis' hat,the emotions running deep inside of me. Resting my hand on my leg,I felt something in my jeans pocket. Reaching inside and grabbing the object revealed that it was a Sharpie marker. Staring at the blank wall ahead, I removed the lid and started to write upon the surface. My mind was spinning as I wrote, thinking of all the wonderful memories Ellis and I had shared. The Sharpie tip moved away from the wall and I scanned over the text, analysing my message.
~Ellis,you were a great friend
and an even better companion,
You will never be forgotten
Please watch over us.
I smiled as I read my words, but then paused and thought for a moment.Something was missing. A silence filled the room until the Sharpie moved forward and wrote once more. The nib removed itself and I replaced the lid. A lone tear ran down my cheek as I re-read what I'd put,but it was just right. Placing the Sharpie back in my pocket,I took one last look and turned around, walking out of the saferoom to join my comrades. The cold breeze swirled through an open window of the saferoom and the moonlight reflected the text on the wall.
No matter how many obstacles I face
No matter what dangers I must pass,
From the moment that my heart stops beating
We shall be together at last.
I love you XXX
