"Ghost in the Barn"
A small family has just moved out from the city. Their reason for moving was to have a better life as living in the city created issues for them. In this small family, there was a mother, a father, a little sister and little brother. The sister, whose name was Emily, was very talented and was gifted in singing. The brother, whose name was Daren, is considered to be an average boy. Because of the city life, he wasn’t use to living out in the country. “I want to go back home.” Daren said while looking out at the car window. Despite their unhappiness, the parents knew what they were doing was right. “We know,” The father said while turning his head to face him. “But we are about to embark ourselves in a new life- a life in the country. Doesn’t that sound fun?” Daren looked at him and nodded while his reaction turned to a little smile. Knowing that everything was alright, the father turned his head back around. Their mother was driving and couldn’t turn to talk to them.
After an hour of driving through the dirt road, they made it to their new house. The house was small and old, but it was perfect enough to live in a new style. They unpacked the car and entered the house. When they entered, the kitchen was on the right and the living room was on the left. There was also a hallway that leads to two bedrooms and a small bathroom. It was a good house to live in, but the kids didn’t agree much. “Why don’t you two go outside and play or explore.” The father said. The kids nodded and went outside. They sat on the front porch for a minute, not knowing what to do. “This really stinks.” The brother said while rocking the porch swing. The sister disagreed. “I think this is really nice,” She responded. “Look at the livestock for instance. There are chickens, cows, pigs, and horses. And look at the pretty garden over there. We can grow our own food. And look over there.” She suddenly froze. The brother was concerned. “What’s wrong?” He looked at the direction she was pointing at and saw an old barn. He stared at it for a while and grabbed his sister’s arm. “Let’s go check it out.”
The two children made their way inside the old, abandon barn. It was an average typical building with old haystacks, old farming tools and equipment, and old stables where the horses were kept for the night. “It’s just a simple barn,” Daren said while looking at his sister. “Let’s go back.” Though he had no concern about it, Emily could sense something. She didn’t know what it was, but she knew something was going on. After a while of staring around, she snapped out of thought and ran out as fast she could. When she made it inside the house, she found Daren and explained what she felt. As a brother, he laughed and mocked her. “What, was there bad spirits in there?” She thought it was not funny and tried to get him to listen. Nothing helped however. After dealing with him, she tried to talk to her parents about it. Like Daren, they thought she was out of her mind and told her it was just her imagination. Though they disagreed with her, she didn’t pout or cry. She was a very reasonable girl and never picked a fight. She decided to forget about it and agreed that it was all just figments of her imagination.
As night started to appear, everything was silent. The farm animals were very quite, the wind blew quietly, and the sound of crickets and frogs were also not visible. The night was very quite and appeared frightening for Emily. She couldn’t sleep as she knew something weird was going on. As she got out of bed, she turned and saw the barn out through the window. She walked closer towards the window and stood there while holding her stuffed animal. It was obvious she was scared. After staring at the barn for about an hour, she grew tired and decided to lay down on her bed and went back to sleep. She finally slept through the whole night peacefully. When morning rose, she was still asleep. Her mother came in and tried to wake her up. “Your breakfast is getting cold dear.” She said while pulling the covers. Emily groaned a little and finally woke up. “What time is it?” She asked while rubbing her eyes. The mother looked at the little alarm clock beside her bed and said it was 11:30 AM. The girl was surprised she slept late. After making up her bed, she walked to the kitchen and sat with her brother and father who were already done eating. “It’s about time you got up,” The father said while putting down the newspaper. “We were worried you were never going to get up.” She felt sorry for worrying him and tried to apologize, but the father patted her on the head and said he understood. After breakfast, Emily and Daren went outside to play on an old tire swing. While playing, Emily’s attention drew back to the barn. Somehow, she had a strange feeling that something wasn’t right. But there was nothing she could do- Daren and her parents didn’t believe her so there was nothing left to it. As the hours went by, the kids came inside because their mother wanted to show them something. What she showed them was a set of old clothes she found in the closet in the bedroom her and her husband sleep in. “Look at these old clothes,” She said while showing to them. “I think you two would look adorable in them.” Daren wasn’t too thrilled, but Emily was. The two kids tried on each of the old clothes. Emily enjoyed wearing them, but Daren didn’t. After trying on every outfit, they were washed and hung in the closets- in the kid’s room and in the parent’s room.
As the day went by, everyone sat in the kitchen table for dinner. Just when they were about to eat, they heard a noise coming from the kid’s bedroom. The mother went into the room and gasped with shock- all of the old outfits were gone. Everyone walked to the bedroom and gasped too. Emily was frightened the most. “Where did all of the dresses go?” She asked with fright. Her mother didn’t know what happened to them. She said that she would try to search the house and see if they were anywhere. The father also volunteered to help out. Emily wanted to help too and joined on the hunt. After searching through the whole house, they gave up. “I don’t know where they could’ve gone,” The mother said with a loud sigh. “And those dresses were adorable too.” Emily was disappointed too- like her mother, she loved the outfits. Just then, the father realized something. “What about the old barn?” Emily’s reaction suddenly changed. She ran to the door and stood in front of it. “No! No! No! No! No! Not that barn!” She yelled. Everyone was shocked because this was the first time she yelled. The father got up and walked to her. “What is so scary about that barn?” He asked. She wanted to explain to him again about what she felt, but she didn’t want to hear the same answer again. Instead of responding, she walked to the left side of her father and grabbed his hand. Confused, the father didn’t know what to say. He turned and told both Daren and his wife that they were going to search the barn and they would return. They walked to the barn and slowly opened the door. It was really, really dark inside so there was no lights. Emily was scared from head to toe. She grasped her father’s hand as tight as she could. After looking around for a short time, the father finally figured out where the lights were. He turned on the switch and the lights slowly flickered on. They started searching around hoping to find the missing outfits. Emily was looking around the haystacks while her father was looking through the empty stables. Looking around, they didn’t find any traces of the outfits. Just as they were about to leave, the barn lights soon turn off. Emily screamed very loudly. Her screaming was heard throughout the area and the mother and Daren heard. They both left the house and dashed to the barn. When they entered, they were blinded by total darkness. They started yelling, hoping they would find her and the father or husband. After a while of yelling, the lights flicked back on. What the mother and Daren discovered was that the father and Emily were no where to be seen.
“What is going on?!” The mother yelled in panic and fear. Daren was afraid too. As they were about to loose hope, they discovered that the two were actually alright. The father was carrying Emily who was past out in his arms. They ran to them and were relieved to know that they were alright. Though the happiness was here, it soon faded when the lights begin to flicker on and off. While this was happening, the appearance of a little girl was visible near the horse stables. The girl was wearing a brown dress and had a summer hat on her head. The girl’s face was visible- she had green eyes and was smiling a sweet smile. The mother, father, and Daren all stared at the ghost with fear and panic. The girl walked close towards them slowly while giggling. “What does she want with us?” The mother whispered to her husband. He didn’t know. After walking close enough to them, the girl stopped and then stared at them while asking, “What are you doing on my farm?” Everyone didn’t know what to say. The mother finally spoke up. “We-We-We-We-We just moved from the city and wanted to live in a new lifestyle. We didn’t know this was your farm.” The girl at first gave a confused reaction, but then smiled while giggling a tad. “Oh. I didn’t know you were looking for a new life. I suppose you can stay on my farm, but I will be watching you and if you do anything to destroy it, I will haunt you forever.” After she said that, the ghost girl disappeared. With a sigh of relief, everyone relaxed.
The next morning, Emily awoke and didn’t remember anything from last night. The mother, father and Daren decided it was wise not to tell. Life for the family would never be the same, but they did kept the ghost girl’s promise in keeping the farm nice and settling.
