Artemis sighed. Why did Mother have to drag me along? he thought. Butler stood beside him, surveying every entrance and exit. He glared at everyone who walked by.
Artemis soon saw his mother return with an armful of clothes. She shoved Elena into a dressing room and handed her an outfit to try on.
“Now Arty,” she said, turning to her son.
“Yes, Mother?”
“This is where you and Butler come in. I want you two to tell us what you think of the outfits.”
Artemis sighed. “Of course, Mother.”
“Okay, I’m ready,” Elena said from behind the door.
“Come on out, dear,” Mrs. Fowl called.
Elena opened the door and walked out to show the Fowls. It took all of Artemis’s will power to keep his mouth from dropping open. For the first time, he really noticed her. His eyes studied every detail of her body.
Her flowing strawberry blonde hair, her pale skin that seemed to glow, her long shapely legs, the way her body curved at her waist. Her mouth was a light shade of pink and always seemed to be smiling. He glanced up and found himself staring straight into her deep eyes that seemed to change color in the light.
“Well? What do you think?” Elena said, turning around. Artemis looked at the outfit. It was a blue spaghetti strap dress, with multi colored flowers printed on it. The top had a thick string that criss-crossed up her chest and tied at the top. Artemis swallowed.
“It looks wonderful, Lena!” Mrs. Fowl gushed as she clapped her hands together. Elena smiled at the compliment.
“What do you think, Artemis?” Elena said, turning to face the awestruck boy.
“It looks great,” Artemis said, forcing his voice to remain calm. This is going to be a long shopping trip, he thought as Elena went back into the dressing room to try on a different outfit.
By the end of the trip, Elena had forty new outfits, ten new pairs of shoes, a new hairbrush, toiletries, and makeup. Wow, she thought, Mrs. Fowl didn’t need to buy me all of this.
When they returned to the manor, she, and Mrs. Fowl carried all of the stuff to Elena’s room.
“Lena, thank you so much for going along with this today. It really made me happy,” Mrs. Fowl said.
Elena smiled. “No problem, Mrs. Fowl.”
“Will you promise me something?”
“Of course, Mrs. Fowl.”
“Promise me that you will let me do this again sometime.”
“Oh, uh,” Elena stuttered. “Why, of course, Mrs. Fowl.”
“Thank you, dear,” Mrs. Fowl said, hugging Elena. “Meet me downstairs in thirty minutes for a briefing on your new responsibilities.” She walked out of the room and left Elena standing there alone. She sat down on the bed, thinking about her new life. No one had ever been this nice to her before. Hot tears of joy slowly slid down her face. She cried with pure happiness for the next twenty minutes. She wiped her face and started to put away her new belongings, unaware that someone was watching her.
