BBC Merlin Confession - "Mary Sue"

HumbleQueen I'm taking a page out of Stacey's book and posting this confession so that I can copy down the comment someone made as a rebuttal. Many of you know this is a subject close to my heart, and this comment blew me away by a fellow Tumblr blogger who obviously not only understands the character of our Guinevere, but understand IMO the true essence of womanhood. She understands not only the struggles of women over the centuries, but their greatness and victories. But most importantly, she understands true honor irregardless of fame and glory. Actually, our invisibility has a lot to do with our glory. And isn't this a perfect description of our Guinevere? Wickederthanyou: As an American this strikes me as something between ridiculous and hilarious. What exactly does one do to earn the title of monarch other than being born into it or marrying into it? Carry on. Irresistible-revolution: ^^ Exactly. In fact, what did Arthur do to earn the right of sovereignty over his people? Hmm? Lest we forget, it was this ‘useless’ character Gwen who schooled him on his privilege and compelled him to question his arrogance. Guinevere may not have magic like Merlin and she may not be combat-skilled like Morgana, but she risked life and limb for Camelot on multiple occasions. I keep thinking of a line from ‘The Two Towers’, when Eowyn protests being sent off with the women and children. She says: “What renown is there in that?”. To which Aragorn says “Milady, a time may come for honor without renown. Who then will the people look to?” Honor without renown is exactly what defines Guinevere’s continued strength, self-sacrifice and service to the people of Camelot. Honor without renown is the purview of many women throughout history, women who rolled bandages, tended the dead and dying, raised children against insurmountable odds, cooked and cleaned the homes of Knights, kept the hearth burning, told stories, passed on traditions and histories, and carried the weight of their people forward through war and famine and disease and deprivation and all the other calamitous circumstances created by patriarchal political machinations. “Invisibility is not a new thing with us.
