What if it transpires that Gwen's mother was a noblewoman. I don't think I've heard her mention why her mother is not around. Okay, my theory is as follows:

Her mother was a Lady at Court of noble blood, who had a liaison with Tom the blacksmith, this man with the tanned skin who she fell in love with on sight. She would secretly watch him work, toiling at his forge, making shoes for the horses. He made her a ring of pure silver, hammered it and shaped it in the blazing fires, his sweat enshrined in the silver. They did not have just a liaison, they fell in love but were destined to be apart....
