Ok, my hand has been forced on this essay.
Angel leaves Buffy in Season 3 because he realises that she would never be able to have a normal life as long as he's around...sacrificing something you truly want for the sake of somebody elses happiness is a true act of love. The reasons are all there for us to hear, The Mayor explains the pain to come in 'Choices' and then Angel himself does so in 'The Prom'...as well as Joyce. Giles always knew deep down and even Buffy and Willow admit that Angel is right.
In 'I Will Remember You' Angel goes to see the oracles after the fight with the demon that restored his humanity and is told that Buffy will die if he remains human as there is only one champion in the world and instead of the forces of darkness attacking both Angel and Buffy then B would just get the lot...plus she'd have to look after Angel all the time because he'd have no powers. This is what makes that an act of love:
Woman Oracle: You are wrong. This one is willing to sacrifice every drop of human happiness and love he has ever known for another. He is not a lower being.
Spike doesn't save the world for Buffy, saving the world is Spike's redemption for all the evil things he did as a vampire. I don't have a problem with Spike in Season 7 at all, he has a soul and that's fine by me (even though they just turned him into Angel). My problem is with the fact that Spike 'fought' to regain his soul.
In Seasons 5 & 6, Spike does not have a soul yet he ludicrously falls in love with that which he most hates. Slayers were things that Spike hunted out to kill...not to 'ahem', ya know.
When Glory beats on Spike, I was utterly unconvinced that he would protect Dawn. Helping Buffy out in Season 2 so that he could escape with Dru yeah, that I got. Spike explains all those reasons himself in 'Becoming'. Spike loving Buffy was ridiculous though, it's explained many times on both Buffy and Angel that soulless demons can't really love, they may believe they can but they truly can't. Who's the only person that can judge on this (up to Season 7)? Angel, because he was with Darla for 200 years but knew as soon as he regained his soul and fell in love with Buffy that he was never really in love with Darla.
I'm waiting for someone to point out Spike and Dru to me, who do share emotion as The Judge says in 'Surprise'. If anyone tells me they were in love though I would merely point you towards the Angel episode 'Destiny' I believe it is...*SPOILER ALERT*...where Dru sleeps with Angelus. Clearly not in love with Spike is she.
It was much more convincing in Season 4 when Spike fought demons and even helped out the scoobies for his own means...mainly cash for blood, staying undead and a good spot of violence before bedtime.
To me Spike would've told Glory about Dawn in seconds, he would've stuck with Dru when she returned in 'Crush' and he defo would've tried to kill Buffy once he finds out he can hit her in 'Smashed'.
I don't get how all you Spike lovers still adore him when in 'Smashed' he tries to kill again as soon as he hits Buffy because he thinks his chip has broken and then later on in Season 6 he tries to rape her! One of the most unforgivable things any man could do surely?? If leaving someone that you love is considered ridiculous then surely attempting to rape someone you 'love' is a much worse crime? I'm waiting for the "but Spike didn't have a soul then" comeback. I know, and that's exactly my point, he's not in love.
Bottom line, Spike wouldn't fight for his soul, soulless demon end of. I was praying he was gonna get the chip removed at the end of S6 and even wanted him to turn after seeing Buffy kiss Angel in 'End Of Days'.
I don't hate Spike, I actually really like the character but I just don't agree with where the writers went with the 'love' stuff. Once he gets his soul then fine, I'm on board with Spuffy in Season 7..it's just how we get there that I will never accept.
