Synopsis
Lynn feels like it's time to start dating again and decides to start by asking out her next door neighbor, Joe. Sophie, against her mother's wishes, decides to go to a party and gets caught in the act. Elsewhere, Karen gets stood up for a date with a modeling agent, whom she thought might further her languishing career. Sophie learns about the bet.

It has been a week for the rest of us but not for the Kerr’s. “Over Exposure” begins the morning after the previous episode, “Reload”. Sophie wakes up and sees that Karen’s bed hasn’t been slept in. Lynn is in the kitchen cooking breakfast for her daughters. Sophie covers for her sister telling their mother that Karen got up early and went out for a jog. Lynn questions this story but she has her presentation on her mind and lets it pass. Lynn again has made pancakes although Sophie asked for eggs.
About the same time, Karen wakes up in Kevin’s bed. Kevin is in the shower. He emerges and tells Karen that “last night was fun” but he has to get to the office. He offers Karen cab fare but, almost insulted, Karen says she has it. Instead Karen brings up the meeting with Kevin’s agency that the two had talked about the night before. Kevin attempts to brush her off. Karen presses her advantage suggesting dinner on Friday. Again Kevin attempts to dissuade her saying her has a client meeting but undaunted Karen suggests he can reschedule that meeting unlike (her) “one-time-only guaranteed-to-satisfy don’t-want-to-miss-it offer”: Unable to resist any further, Kevin agrees.
On her way to school Sophie runs into Karen. She tells Karen that their mother noticed Karen was gone but she covered using the morning jog excuse. Sophie suggests that Karen call if she’s not coming home but Karen tells not to worry. Sophie not satisfied asks Karen if she’d worry if (Sophie) didn’t come home and Karen replies that she’d worry if Sophie did anything out of the ordinary.
Lynn’s presentation is going well until Julian Fiske looks in and she is momentarily thrown off her game. Recovering she completes her presentation and it is well received. Afterward Julian catches up to her and tries to congratulate her. Lynn, however, is upset mostly about how his attentions will be interpreted by her coworkers. Julian assures her that no one will talk just because he happened to catch the last two minutes of her presentation. Toby who knows that there is a history between Lynn and Julian says “I don’t know what was more impressive your presentation or the fact that Julian Fiske honored you with his presence”.
The day at Brighton begins and the topic is the annual “White” party. Paisley asks Nicky if he’s going and reminds him that they have gone together every year and suggests they go together as friends but Nicky suggests that they go alone to “give us a chance to see it from a different perspective”.
At the same time Annabelle and Gideon explain the nature and purpose of “The White” party to Sophie. Sophie wonders what is charitable about free liquor and recreational drugs for high school students.
Meanwhile Paisley, turned down by Nicky, asks Nicky’s friend Jason if he’d be interested in going. Jason replies that he isn’t interested in some friend of Paisley’s with a “great personality”. When Paisley suggests they go together Jason, interested, asks her, “what about Nicky”. Paisley tells him that Nicky has his hands full trying to seduce “Simple Sophie” and winning the bet that they made at the beginning of school.
At lunch Gideon tells Sophie and Annabelle that he is taking his father’s place as a celebrity auctioneer and he can invite anyone he wants, He invites Annabelle and Sophie to be his guests. Sophie at first says that there is no way her mother would let her go but Gideon suggests that Sophie tell her mother that she is staring an Annabelle’s and Sophie agrees to go. On the way to class Nicky also invites Sophie to the party and is surprised when she agrees to go.
Lynn comes home to an unpleasant surprise. In the mail are divorce papers from her husband’s attorney. She is so upset that she just stands and reads them in the hallway, blocking access to the apartment mailboxes for among others a neighbor who tries to get her to move so her can get his mail. Visibly upset Lynn takes all her frustrations left over from her marriage on an innocent neighbor. After ranting and relieving all her anger and frustration, Lynn tries to apologize. Her neighbor introduces him self and tells her, “I’m Joe Sepler. I’m not the lyin’ cheatin’ pig you think I am. Although I don’t know you, my guess is that there’s a lot more to you than just a failed marriage”. Lynn manages a smile as Joe walks toward his apartment.
The next morning Lynn is still upset and perusing the divorce papers when Sophie asks if she can spend the night at Annabelle’s. Still distraught, Lynn asks where Annabelle’s parents will be and assured that they will be home she gives Sophie permission to stay out without much thought.
Karen comes in early to work. Evan asks why she is there and Karen tells him she is trading shifts so she can have Friday night off for a family thing. Evan tells her that by “family thing” she means “that guy from the other night”. Karen tells him that it is none of his business. Evan tells her that he didn’t think she was that kind of girl. Karen who has bought Zoe’s slander about Evan tells him, “I’ll pass on the lectures especially from you”. Zoe overhears the conversation and smiling she tells Evan that they have seen many girls like Karen come through and they all compromise their values. Then Zoe goes for what she wants and invites Evan to an after hours party which he agrees to go to.
Annabelle takes Sophie shopping for as white outfit for the party. Sophie is in shock over what it cost. Annabelle asks Sophie what changed, to convinced her to go “The White” party”? “When he (Nicky) asked me”, Sophie replies. “So you guys are pretty much official” comments Annabelle. Sophie asks her what she thinks about her and Nicky? “Just be excited” advises Annabelle. Sophie asks when Annabelle is going to tell Gideon how she feels about him. Should I just “corner him and jump his bones like the wildcat I am”? Asks Annabelle. Just tell him how you feel at the party suggests Sophie.
AT work Lynn talks to Toby about her feelings and Toby suggests that she needs to move on and “get physical” with another man and …quickly. Lynn objects that she would have to be in a relationship before getting into bed with anyone and she’s not ready for that yet. Toby tells her he is not talking about romance, just sex. Lynn is puzzled but the look on her face indicates she is considering Toby’s advice.
Lynn goes home, knocks on Joe’s door, and tries to apologize for her outburst the day before and invites him to dinner the next night. Joe hesitates realizing the rebound factor and asks, “What’s the rush”? Lynn (with a sensual look on her face) tells him “it’s been a long time…since I’ve had a night of “pure, unadulterated, no strings attached…fun” “Fun” says Joe, Tomorrow night it is”.
All three Kerr women have plans on the same night and it’s another battle for the bathroom mirror. Karen questions why Sophie is taking so much trouble for a “glorified slumber party.” She guesses that there will be “boys there.” In turn Sophie questions why Karen is taking so much trouble for work. Sophie and Karen share their real plans with each other. When Lynn joins them they both ask her what her plans are noticing that she looks amazing and both daughters ask their mother who is coming to this party she is attending. Lynn is acting a little out of character but having their own secret plans, Karen and Sophie overlook Lynn’s strange behavior.
The scene shifts first to “The White” party where Nicky and Sophie arrive in the Fiske limo. A D.J. provides the music and “artists” have begun painting women’s white tops as they enter. Paisley watches them obviously looking for the opportunity to sabotage Nicky and Sophie. Gideon tells Annabelle that he wants to take a lap before settling down to some serious alcohol consumption. Annabelle asks why he wants to do a lap and suggests that they just talk. Gideon still clueless asks her what she wants to talk about and Annabelle backs away from expressing her feeling for Gideon.
Sophie admits to Nicky that she is nervous about having her shirt painted so Nicky offers the “perfect” solution. He will paint Sophie’s shirt, however inept his style.
Lynn and Joe have drinks before dinner and Joe shares the story of his divorce. Lynn decides to end the talk about ex’s and to talk about the future. She makes a suggestion that they skip dinner and go to Joe’s apartment. Joe doesn’t argue with that suggestion.
Karen is sitting alone in a restaurant when the waiter tells her that Kevin’s assistant called and that her had gotten hung up. Told that she was welcome to eat dinner on Kevin’s account, Karen tells him to treat all the people at the bar to their next two drinks and dinner and to include a nice 40% tip, Kevin’s treat.
While Nicky paints her shirt, Sophie consumes a large quantity of champagne. Not enough, however, for her to agree to remove her shirt for drying and to be offered for sale. Nicky tells her that it is just some stupid tradition. It’s just so some hard up men can see young women in their bras. Sophie says she will take her shirt off in the ladies room and leaves to find the facility.
Meanwhile Gideon is painting Annabelle’s shirt in a style much more accomplished that Nicky’s. Annabelle tells him how much he likes his painting and says she plan’s to buy it. Sophie happens by and Gideon knocks the painting on her shirt. Sophie explains that Nicky did it as a favor so she wouldn’t have to put up with some lecherous old guy painting her.
Annabelle asks Sophie where Nicky is and then points out him talking with Paisley. Gideon spouts venom about Nicky causing Sophie to go break them up. Paisley takes that opportunity to reveal that Nicky made a bet that he could sleep with her before midterm. Her work complete Paisley doesn’t move quickly enough as Sophie, irate, grabs a tube of green paint and sloshes it on Nicky…and Paisley. Sophie, her inhibitions disabled by alcohol, is angered by this revelation and tells off Nicky who tries to apologize but Sophie won’t have it she tells him; “Go back to Paisley. You two deserve each other.”
Karen leaves the restaurant goes to the entrance of Kevin’s apartment building. Kevin arrives in a cab and she goes off on him. Kevin tries to apologize to her but she slaps him. Then Kevin’s son emerges from the cam and Karen learns that he had been taking care of his son who has a broken arm.
Lynn and Joe are groping and undressing each other and they begin talking about each other, which brings Lynn to her senses. She tells Joe that she hasn’t been on a date for twenty years. Joe tells her that his first date after his divorce was a complete disaster, as well as two through ten. They both realize that they are premature in to sex and Lynn gets dressed and goes home thanking Joe for his honesty.
Sophie while no longer with Nicky is still drunk so she grabs the microphone and begins suggests a theme song for the night “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. Rambling on she begins to remove not only her shirt but also her pants. Gideon interrupts her and takes her outside to a cab. Annabelle comes close to expressing how she feels about Gideon but he still doesn’t get it. Gideon takes Sophie home in the cab and Annabelle stays behind…alone.
Lynn calls Toby with the details but Toby tells her that she should still be in Joe’s bed not home alone calling him. Lynn starts to explain why she wasn’t when Karen comes home dejected and Lynn tells Toby she has to go.
Lynn sits with Karen and draws out the story of Karen’s unhappy date. Passing over the age difference and the fact that Karen was supposed to be working, Lynn listens while Karen tells her that she thought, “He was being like every other guy”. Lynn asks her what she means and Karen tells her that all men “disappoint lie deceive”. Horrified, Lynn says that all men aren’t like that. “What about dad” Karen asks. Lynn tells her that there is a good one out there “you just have to let yourself find him”.
Sophie and Gideon arrive at Sophie’s apartment building. Gideon offers to accompany her to her door or “to hoist her up the fire escape”. Sophie chooses the fire escape but as she climbs through her bedroom window she sees Karen and her mother talking on Karen’s bed. “This isn’t as bad as it looks” Sophie says.
Lynn takes her daughters for a late night walk. She reminds the girls of their night walks back in New Mexico. She tells her daughters “we need to talk”, not only about Sophie and Karen’s evenings but about “something that came in the mail this week.”
Nicky leaves the party alone. He tries to call someone but gets a busy signal and then gets in his limo. Inside among a bevy of young women in their bras, Paisley sits alone a disappointed look on her face, Also alone, Annabelle bids on the shirt Gideon painted and finally Gideon rides alone in a cab a sad expression on his face.
