I never noticed until now, how truly EVIL this ring is..
It's has a mind of it's own. Orginally created with the sole purpose of letting Sauron rule the world.
And Prince Isildur of Gondor cuts the One Ring off of Sauron's finger, unfortantly Isildur becomes almost immediately corrupted to it. preventing him from destroying it in Mount Doom. And the ring betrays Isildur for killing it's master and surrviving Orcs murder the prince, and ring is lost for 2,500 years.
But than its discovered by Smeagol’s cousin Deagol, who stares at it obessively.. Smeagel comes to check on him, and also becomes entranced by it, Smeagol demands it, but Deagol refused.. Both having been quickly corrupted by it, things quickly escalate, and they both fell into violent rage, fighting to the death.. And in the end, Smeagol strangled him, and slowly turned into Gollum.
It's than found by Bilbo, after posioning Smeagols mind for centuries, and after the events of THE HOBBIT it finally starts to corrupt Biblo as well. Which is shown when Gandalf tried to persuade him to leave the Ring with Frodo. Bilbo refused to give up the Ring, referring to it as his "precious" – just as Gollum had, and accusing Gandolf of wanting it for himself.
It than of coarse goes to Frodo. Who resists the ring best he can. But it slowly changes him.. Smeagol dosen't excatly help with this either, turning Frodo against Sam, cause Sam knows Smeagol's true intentions.
At mount doom, Frodo finally gave in. As this is arguably where the ring is at it's strongest. And it knows that all Frodo had to do was destory it, so I guess you can say, it turned it's powers up to the highest it can go. ollum struck again, and struggled with the invisible Frodo. Finally, Gollum bit off Frodo's finger and seized the Ring. He gloated over his "prize", dancing madly, but stepped over the edge and fell into the lava. (in the film, Frodo pushes him, finally seeing Smeagol's true nature).
It's a lot like those diamonds from GTA 4.. It causes bad things to happen to whoever holds them.. Though the ring is pure evil. The diamonds just bring poor luck.. So it's different.
