In school, I always hated it when teachers would give out assignments such as writing about our role models. I don’t know about you, but I never had a role model. Whenever I would do one of those assignments, I felt nervous. I was a very good bull shitter, but I didn’t like doing it. It made me feel dirty. It still does. So I grew up thinking of role models as myths.
    Therefore, I was surprised the other week when I realised that I had one. Her name is Carey Mulligan. Now, I didn’t know much about Carey Mulligan, and I still don’t. The little that I do, though, I like. I know that she doesn’t wear much makeup – and she doesn’t need it. After watching some of her performances, I was impressed with how cute she was. She was and is adorable. She doesn’t need to make herself up and she doesn’t try to be sexy. I admired that about her. I won’t say that I had an epiphany – that seems too strong a word – but I can say that it changed my opinion of beauty a bit. I found myself slowly wearing less makeup – not caring about imperfections – and feeling better about myself.
    Shortly after realising that I looked up to Carey Mulligan, I googled an interview of hers. She seemed very humble and honest and dignified, which isn’t so new to me but that I was pleased to find in her. I also, though, read that she never set out to be seen as a beautiful film star – however she is regarded as one to many people. She’d read on the internet that people didn’t find her attractive enough to be a movie star. I can see what people mean – to a certain extent – but I think she’s lovely nonetheless. Furthermore, she has the kind of awkward, sweet looks that I like in men. I think that seeing her own it makes it seem possible to me. I want to be cute, too!
    Carey Mulligan is human, so of course she isn’t perfect. I’m not exactly like her ( I have better taste in clothes ) and I don’t know her personally. That being written, you can’t fake the kind of honesty that she presents. She doesn’t bare her soul to strangers, but she isn’t putting on any kind of façade. I feel like a proud sister.
