Chapter 1
The First Day
Its gone, summer, it’s over it passed right over me all I remember is wearing shorts and watching family feud on TV. Oh boy a junior one year before I’m finally done. In homeroom I finally got to see my future in front of me it’s a play actually a musical but it’s still my kind of thing. Hi my name is Martha Elzmit-Brown long relative of the unsinkable Molly Brown and this is my journal of, The First Day. As I was journaling I heard someone call my name and it was a voice that I would stop journaling for anything “Hey Martha” I heard my boyfriend call and boy was that comforting because he was with his family in France visiting his grandfather for the entire summer so I was all alone on the weekends but I rushed over and hugged him tightly. “What’s up girl you miss me much?” that was a dumb question to ask of coarse I missed him he’s my life. “Duh! You only answered like two of my phone calls and replied to like three e-mails” I sounded angry but it was just a joke. “I’m sorry my family was doing a lot of things like visiting old friends seeing what’s new in the town…” “Jacque, Jacque stop it was a joke don’t take it so…” All of the sudden I was interrupted by Alice Tamp the schools richest snobbiest student ever known “Hi Jacque what are you doing you cute little thing you oh I see you were just talking to miss nerd making her feel not so insignificant.” Ugh that Alice is always trying to hint that Jacque should be her boyfriend instead of mine. “Oh hello Alice, I don’t know what you mean I wasn’t talking to you until just now.” Oh man the look on Alice’s face when Jacque said that was just priceless. “Hey hey hey it’s the BFF of the Carl and his bro whatsup?” Oh yes Carl and Timmy have just arrived at school. I’ve known Carl since second grade, and I used to babysit Timmy for Mrs. Whiner. “Hello everyone have a nice summer?” “Eh it was alright I guess.” I glared at Jacque jokingly and then the bell rang for first period to start. It turns out that as a junior you have the choice of what math class you want to take. Jacque and I chose to stick with the original math curriculum for now, but who knows maybe we’ll advance after the first quarter. Today in Algebra 2 we took so many notes I thought my fingers were going to fall off, but then I started to stare at Jacques perfect complexion and the next thing I know he was smiling at me and I was falling out of my chair. “Ms. Brown will please stop admiring Mr. Fitzroy and finish your notes.” Talk about embarrassing now the whole class knows that I was staring and Jacques beautiful face, but oh well. I was able to finish my notes just as the bell rang for second period. I headed to Science 101 while Jacque went to honors history, and when I got to my classroom I saw that my science partner was none other than Alice Tamp. Alice was my partner last year too, and I still have scars from the acid she “accidently” spilt on my legs (I ended up in the hospital for a week.) Today thankfully we weren’t working with chemicals or anything hot just taking notes like we did in math class. Finally after six more hours, the bell rang to signify that it was now seventh period. Now all I have to do is survive through the musical auditions, but even that is going to be hard considering Alice will be trying out as well. I’m getting so nervous that I can’t even think straight, and I can barely do that while Alice is watching anyway.
Chapter 2
The surprise.
I walked into the theatre and found that I was shaking like my grandmother does when she picks up a pot (which on different circumstances is really humorous). As I walked I got more and more nervous and soon I was ready to run for it, but at that moment Jacque, Carl, and Timmy walked up behind me and gave me some relief. “We saw the notice and decided to try out too.” Jacque explained as I flooded him with questions, “Yeah this thing is gonna be tight yo.” Chimed Carl. Our drama teacher Mrs. Haploid (yeah I know its funny) stood up and made the announcements. “Now here is how this audition is going to work out. I will select a group of performers to do a scene together using the characters they want to be. Then they will sing a few bars together then they will do it separately. Furthermore I would like to point out that there are no small parts only small actors.” Wow you know now that I come to think of it Mrs. Haploid has always been the nice teacher in the school. “So first up is… Jacque, Carlton, Timothy, and Martha.” We got up and went back stage as soon as she called our names, but while we were back there another group came in one with Alice, her best friend, and two boys that constantly follow her around. “Get out of here Brown this is our practice space!” Yelled Alice’s bestie Trina the second most annoying person in the world, and she is also trying to get Jacque to date her. “Yo dudettes why can’t we just practice in different corners of this practice pad?” Even though I only understood half of what he said I could piece together the “let’s work together” part. “Why don’t you just shut your face DUDE?” When Alex Peterson the biggest of the boys who were with Alice went to punch Carl but then Mrs. Haploid came in and broke it up. After about three minutes of practicing we were ready to perform our scene for everyone. In the scene Jacque, who will be playing Peter, is talking to my character Isabella, Peter’s lover and secret fiancé. “But Isabella I love you I need you, you can’t cancel the wedding now.” “I know you love me Peter I love you too but if our parents ever found out about the marriage…” “ISABELLA MONTEROSA!” In storms Isabella’s father, who is played by Carl, and Isabella’s brother Palcon, played by Timmy. “HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO THIS BOY HE IS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE!” “B-but dad” “Father I feel that you are being a bit unfair.” Timmy sounded so cute and Carl surprisingly sounded really grown up. “UNFAIR! HIS FATHER CHEATED ME OUT OF THREE HUNDRED POUNDS FOR HIS “MAGICAL FROG!” “Well maybe you shouldn’t have fallen for it dad!” “Sir You are right my father did treat you unfairly but I promise I will work to pay back every pound my father cheated you.” That’s where we stopped our scene so that we could get to our song. While we were practicing we decided to do the song Firework by Katy Perry, and I personally thought we did pretty good. I completely zoned out for the rest of the groups auditions, but I was in the moment when Mrs. Haploid told us that the audition sheet would be posted on the bulletin board at 8:00 sharp. Me and Jacque left the Auditorium and headed home because even though our parents really DO hate each other we live right next door to them. My parents are divorced so I live with my dad all week except for Saturday nights when I have to go stay with my mom, my cute little half- brother, and my slimy step-dad, Ryan. A little history on Ryan… there is none because he had one of his friends hack into FBI files and delete his criminal record, which probably includes arrest warrants, jail sentences, and illegal drug distribution to miners. I know the last part is true because he offered to sell ME some marrawana cheap, but thankfully I was raised right so it was easy for me to refuse. Why did my mom marry this creep you may ask? Well I’ll tell you, the explanation is my little half-brother, Rodney, who just happened to bring out a temporary good side to Ryan (which is surprising because up until that point I didn’t think Ryan HAD a good side to him). Anyway back to me and Jacque walking into my house. As soon as I closed the front door and turned around to look at my living room I knew something was wrong, because I saw my dad’s car keys and jacket laying on the floor, but my dad doesn’t get home until 6:00 at night. I told Jacque to sit down and wait then I went to my dad’s room. As soon as I entered I wished I hadn’t, I walked in on my dad and his girlfriend, Mellie, making out over a stupid soap opera, but I didn’t bother to stay to find out what it was I just wanted to forget about what I saw and get back to my world. “What’s up?” Jacque asked me as I sat next to him. I completely forgot that I still had the deer in the headlights look on my face. “Oh… Nothing my dad’s just home… early that’s all.” I can’t tell him what I saw I mean it wasn’t that bad, but for someone who hasn’t even had her first kiss that was a bit disturbing. After about half an hour my dad came out and saw me and Jacque holding hands watching Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince which really didn’t sit well with my father. “Martha didn’t I tell you that your… boyfriend… is not allowed in the house?” “Dad didn’t I tell you to leave a note or text me when you come home early to be with Susan?” That was honestly the best retort I could think of at that time, but hey it worked boy was it funny. “YOU DO NOT TALK BACK TO ME YOUNG LADY!” “Whatever dad. I’m gonna walk Jacque home see you in like three minutes.” I walked to Jacques house which, really, we just had to jump over the wall separating mine and his yards. I had the feeling my dad was watching so when I hugged Jacque I gave him a kiss on the cheek, and not just because I wanted to make my dad mad as hell. When I got back my dad and Susan were sitting on the love seat silently which could only mean one thing, family meeting. “Oh no!” I exclaimed, “Give me the bad news first…” “But sweetheart there is no bad news it’s only good news.” “Oh really what is it then?” Gosh, I feel like a parent talking to my dad like this. After a few glances at each other Susan piped up and said, “Your father and I are getting married!” WHAT!?!? How can they do this to me I already have one step-parent that hates me why do I need another one? Why can’t I remain the only girl in my father’s life? Why the bloody hell do we need Susan? I wanted to scream at my dad then lock myself in my room for the rest of my life, but I can’t do that my dad looks so happy with Susan and his happiness should come first. “That’s…umm… great guys I’m really happy for you.” “aww we’re so glad you feel that way Martha.” “Well Susan I just think my dad needs to be happy, and no offense or anything but I don’t have to start calling you mom do I?” “Oh no of course not dear you can just continue calling me Susan.” Well then that’s one problem I can subtract from my list of “Why Another Wedding?” turn downs.

Preface
At some point in our life there’s a time when life seems like a field of flowers in the spring about to bloom in the Garden of Eden or like a summers day that never ends, all warm and bright. My life was like that when I was younger and had nothing to worry about. All the woes in my house were my parents that had cast dark shadows over them long before any of my siblings were born. So when I used to dream of being a small child in the Garden of Eden it was at time of happiness and peace in our house. Our house, our small white house on the edge of the street that didn’t stick out, oh how I wished it would stick out with blooming gardens like the ones in my dreams. There was a time when life was the way it is now for me there’s a time like this in every child’s life but your have to fight hard to keep it as an adult.
