First of all I just wanna say how upset I am at this whole Glee mess and how knowing that two of the best characters are being written off the show forever is an absolute outrage. And on that note i'm even more pissed that Cory's talent is continuously overlooked and outshined by his castmates story arcs on Glee, and he's slowly becoming nothing but a shadow. I do wanna say first off how happy I am for Chris, his success is truly earned as his his nomination. But at the same time I have to post these thoughts someone posted on tumblr that really hit home for me where it concernes Cory. Read after the jump:
This is particularly for the anon who asked what I thought about Ryan getting Chris/Lea’s opinion, but not Cory’s: I totally replied to your message incorrectly ‘cause I didn’t read the question in the interview where Ryan flat out says that he didn’t discuss it with Cory.
And now that I have, “what I think” is this: “I didn’t talk to Cory about it. I presume he knows” .. “I PRESUME HE KNOWS” ?????? The hell does that even mean? You can talk to Lea and Chris and get their input, but you can only GUESS that one of the most important, central characters might have an inkling ‘cause you didn’t discuss the matter with him? Okay. Deep breath. I’m trying to be rational and just assume that maybe Cory wasn’t available at the time. ..but screw that, because he’s had MONTHS and literally YEARS to get Cory’s feedback on this.
This is my one gripe (well, not my only gripe, but, right now..) with Ryan Murphy: HE’S OBSESSED WITH RACHEL AND KURT. OBSESSED. I get that they’re a main facet, I get that. Rachel Berry herself is basically everything about the show all wrapped up in one little person. But.. it gets to be insane. He pushes, and pushes, and pushes at those storylines, and I’m talking about the Kurt plot in particular, and it gets RIDICULOUS, because.. what’s he trying to prove? He preaches to the choir more than anyone I know. People watching this show are already, more often than not, supportive of homosexuality. We don’t need to see Kurt’s struggles 24/7. Not to mention that Season 2 basically turned into The Kurt And Blaine Variety Hour or something. WHY are we focusing on BLAINE when there are members of New Directions who have been there from the VERY BEGINNING and have yet to get some proper attention? Why.. why is this happening? I know, personally, that he’s lost a ton of viewers that way, because so many of my friends were like “screw this.. this show used to be fun and quirky and enjoyable, and now it’s True Life: I’m Gay” so they stopped watching. He seriously has his own little gay agenda, and it’s great to see the issue get attention, don’t get me wrong, but he’s beat it to the ground and then some.
As for Rachel.. I feel like he sometimes gets obsessive with Rachel getting to Broadway. Yes, it’s good, it’s what she’s always wanted, blah blah blah.. but Rachel getting to Broadway isn’t what it’s all about. It’s about Rachel getting to Broadway AND staying together with the love of her life. THAT’S what it’s about, THAT’S what the show should be selling.. that you CAN have it all. I just feel like he writes, through Rachel and Kurt, about what he wanted his own life to be. He’s, like.. living vicariously through these characters. I swear, watching The Glee Project, I was just CRINGING at the thought that Alex could even win, because I will SCREAM if we get a new gay kid. I will fucking lose my mind. We have Kurt. We have Blaine. Now we still have Santana and Brittany to deal with, and preferably Karofsky (if they leave that hanging, I will not be happy) so, seriously, another gay kid and I will just lose my shit. But, I digress.. point here: I hate that he gets so caught up with Kurt and Rachel.
And this ties in to the Cory issue, because I HATE that Ryan seems to not deem it as important. As a character, Finn already gets the short end of the stick all the time. Not getting Cory’s two cents is like saying his character doesn’t matter as much, and his input as an actor, as a crucial part of this show, doesn’t matter. Finn, if written properly and consistently, is a character that I feel a TON of people could identify with if they’d just stop hating on him for two seconds. Everyone thinks he’s some awful guy when he’s really like every person on this planet: didn’t really know what he was doing, just going through the motions of life, until something sparked his interest. He made mistakes along the way, and he took a couple wrong turns, but he, at the end of the day, just wants to love and be loved. THAT IS THE STORY OF THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE. All these morons picking Finn apart: I bet you’re perfect, aren’t you? I bet you’ve never been so hurt that you weren’t thinking rationally, or that you’ve never just wanted the pain to go away at any cost, or that you’ve just wanted one thing and it killed you that you couldn’t have it. I BET.
Let me preface this by saying: don’t get me wrong. I am over the moon for Chris, I really, really am. He’s worked hard, and he’s so talented, and he’s changing so many lives.. he deserves every nod he gets. But I can’t help but feel sad, particularly for Cory, and then some for Lea.
Cory. Cory, Cory, Cory. I am just waiting for the day someone other than the Teen Choice Awards will realize how talented he is. Are people watching the same show as us? I’m going to say something that may or may not get me shot: Chris is no more talented than Cory is, he just gets way more attention and his own storylines. He gets the opportunity to show his versatility, to show how he can act his butt off in any scenario. That’s why he’s getting the attention, because Ryan thinks he’s a more important character. But Cory.. I’ve said it once, and twice, and thrice, and I’ll say it again: Cory’s talent is.. “a bright shining gold star,” if you will. To take what little he’s given, and turn it all into the emotional, moving masterpieces he just churns out time after time, is incredible. I cannot believe anyone who says they were not moved to tears by Cory’s emotional performances.. I refuse to believe it. I just wish the writers would stop butchering the character so people actually WANTED to like him again. I mean, of course I always have, and always will, but I’m referring to those who bash him like it’s their day job. If he was written properly, people would want to like him, and would realize just how talented he really is. You have to be incredibly intelligent and quick to play someone as innocent and naive as Finn, and Cory executes it beautifully. I just hate how he always gets shafted because of his storylines, that those plots are what’s keeping him away from receiving critical acclaim, and that, dare I say, Chris’s unnecessarily overwhelming plotlines are casting a shadow over someone who is equally talented, and could be receiving these nominations instead, if given the opportunity to prove himself (personally, I think he already has, but hey, what do I know?).
The writers and producers are supposed to be helping them, pushing them forward into this world they were so new to, not holding them back, and that’s.. what they’re doing right now. Lea deserves this nomination.. hell, she deserves the award. She’s not someone who’s going to just fade into the background with the end of Glee, so I hate that everyone’s making it seem like her time is already over. And Cory.. Cory deserves this just as much as Chris does, if not more. He’s like an unsung hero.. no one appreciates just how much he does for this show.
Really, moral of the story, if you can sift through all my random tangents, is that it just makes me angry that Ryan doesn’t consider Cory important enough. As it is, he’s terribly under-appreciated for his talents, and his character is terribly misunderstood.. it kind of sucks that Ryan doesn’t see above that/try to improve on that and that he doesn’t really care one way or the other what Cory thinks about the matter. Without Finn, Rachel would still be self-centered, and she would be completely one-minded, with no focus outside of her career. Without Finn, Kurt wouldn’t have someone who has turned into one of his big supporters, he wouldn’t have someone who calls him out when he needs to be told he’s out of line. Without Finn, the entire club would’ve crumbled to the ground countless times. It’s sad that people, Ryan included, don’t take the character as seriously as he should be taken, that he’s not given as much credit as he deserves, and that Cory’s input, as the vehicle for this character, and as a tremendously talented actor, isn’t valued as much as it should be.
