I found out many interesting things about L since Watari's death. Probably the most interesting fact was that L was not really dead.
The day when Watari died was the day my life became even more 'interesting'. Once I got out of earshot, I received a call from an unknown number. I got this phone from Watari... I ironically received the mobile phone the night before Watari's demise. He said it was an order from L and neither he knew what it was for. Now I think it was part of the scheme. After picking up the phone, I heard L's voice. He told me that he decided to test his successors for the last time. He who catches Kira first will pass. After this, L said he might be able to choose the one who succeed him.
After he finished, I shakily asked him if he knew that Watari was dead.
"Yes, I am aware of that," was L's reply. I didn't ask him how he knew that. "That's why I called," he then continued. "I need you to be my eyes and ears. I need you to spy on the Kira Task Force, especially on Light Yagami and try to find out as much as you can about Misa's current moves for me."
And that's what I did from that point on. I had to fetch cake for L as well, from time to time. My only motivation (other than that L was my idol) was that I occasionally found out interesting things about him. For example, we, L's successors, were at some point told in Wammy's House about L's age. Doing some math, from what we were told at Wammy's House, L would've been 25 at 'death'. In fact, he told me sometime in 2007 (I can't remember how we got to this subject) that he was 18. I still don't know his real name, but I guess it's fair, since he doesn't know mine, either. And, somehow, it seems as if this is how it's supposed to be. Anyway, I still felt like I was L's confident (now that Watari was dead).
I felt it almost natural to spy on Light Yagami. From the beginning I disliked him. If during the Yotsuba investigation he was (considerably) more pleasant, right after Higuchi's capture he became the same as before. But this period was shadowed by Volpes's disappearance. Before leaving, we agreed to tell each other what was going on on each of our sides of the world. We were sending emails: I could always find a computer free for five minutes and she was supposed to check and answer my emails from some computer at Wammy's House every day. She always answered my emails, but a month after L's 'death', she stopped answering. She never did again.
Time passed without me knowing anything, but sometime in the middle of March I received an email from Near. He must've looked into my computer for the address. The email said that he, Near, was left in charge of an American organization called SPK, Special Provision for Kira, which was like an American version of the Kira Task Force, after Mello and Volpes left Wammy's House. They left because they refused to work with Near, he informed me. It did sound like something Volpes would do, but it was very irritating that nobody knew where they were now.
After receiving this email, I asked L what I should do, because Near asked me to spy on the 'Japanese L' as he put it in the email. L told me to agree, but not give out any important information. He wanted all the contestants to use only the resources they managed to find by themselves. This was also very irritating. I missed my friends... I felt so alone...
Quite some time had to pass before I hear something really new. When the director of the NPA was kidnapped, I got to listen in to the phone calls from the kidnappers. I instantly recognized Mello's voice. I almost called out his name, but thank goodness that I didn't. Volpes had to be with him... Still, I couldn't believe what Mello was up to. What he had dragged my best friend into...
But this was just a slight annoyance compared to when I hear of the news of the explosion of the Mafia hideout in which Mello and Volpes were supposed to be. Yeah, I was sure sad about Soichiro Yagami's death, but they also told us that the explosion must've either killed Mello and Volpes or caused them serious injuries of which they'd die without medical attention. I think I have hated Mello at the time. Hated him for getting my best friend killed.
Still, I was careful not to show this. When the Task Force went digging for more information about Mello and Volpes, they also managed to get information about me from Roger at Wammy's House. I can't believe how easily he gave it away. The look on Light Yagami's face intended itself to be innocent, but his eyes were almost shouting something like 'this is L's pawn which intends my capture and my capture only'. He was very careful about me.
But then, I found out from Near that I was wrong to hate Mello...
