It depends. There are sports which can be co-ed without any problems. But if you look at sports that are timed or something like that, like athletics, ice skating or solo-figure skating, men have lower times/jump higher/do higher level jumps, so having a male and female competition seems fair.

If you have sports like tennis or soccer you can have mixed teams.

But with sports such as martial arts it'd be unfair since males are in average taller and heavier than females.

In tennis males also serve faster than females tbh, so you can have mixed teams, but male vs female would be an uneven match.

In martial arts, boxing, wrestling, etc. they have opponents fight in weight classes so size wouldn't be a factor. Also there are plenty of female tennis players that could destroy even above average male athletes. Generally in any sport athletes will be matched up against other athletes that have a similar skill level.

In my opinion, I think that if someone wants to play a sport, then they shouldn't be limited by their gender. Athletes should be able to compete with each other without gender bias.

I played mixed indoor netball for years, and I loved it and I actually prefer it to women's only netball. But it does change the game. The overal difference is in aggression. Men tend to be a little more reckless with their bodies than women, so you need to be able to withstand more unconventional physicality. So I think you should be able to choose whether or not you enter into that contest. I think mixed sports are awesome and have had no problems playing in mixed netball teams, touch teams and soccer teams, but I wouldn't, for example, join a mixed rugby team... Choice is the key, at least outside of the super-elite level.

I think that what women tend to lack in these sports, they can make up for in other departments. But I don't see why a physical disadvantage would warrant separate sports events. You could make the same argument for short people in basketball, and at least ALL short people are short.

I think it just depends... Maybe it shouldn't be, but I honestly don't know, since I don't play sports. I guess rugby it would probably be better if it was gender-segregated, because enough males get long-standing injuries in that sport, so women have have it a little worse. I don't think it really matters for any other sports, though. Especially not martial arts, as chaann94 said. You see, being smaller and lighter in martial arts is actually more beneficial... The bigger you are, the harder you fall and in martial arts that statement has a whole new meaning. Plus, you want to be fast and swift while doing such a sport, so then you can use the opponent's weight against him/her.

There should just be every option! Female-only sports, Male-only sports, and Unisex-sports. If there's a really exceptional woman, a group of males might want her on the team. And vice versa. But different teams could reserve the right to remain single-sex if they wanted to, also.

Depending on the sport, however, most sports where this question would come up, I think they should be segregated. Men are physically stronger than women more often than not. Martial Arts being a good example. During regular class where it was just practice, guys and girls would be paired up together. But in black belt testing, when you had to give it your all against an opponent, you had to be paired up with another woman, and if there wasn't one available, you had to have a scheduled day to demonstrate your skills.
Now, you know and I know that in real life, you cannot decide who your opponent is but getting shoved around by someone twice your size does not help you learn. If the guys were to deliver a blow to a woman, she would probably get knocked over. But the good thing is, some of the instructors gave additional advice to the women in regards o self-defense techniques. They told us which moves would work for us, which of them wouldn't. It isn't submissive or weak to realize that women are not as strong physically....... we just have o play by a different set of rules ;)

It depends on the sport really. Sometimes it's just for safety reasons; typically men (and this has been backed by biology) are physically stronger than women. So in a game of football imagine having a big buff man verse a smaller woman, that can be pretty dangerous. But sports like cheer and track where things are usually less aggressive (physically anyways) it would be safer and more appropriate.

^ I agree with you... In some sports, like rugby, it definitely should be segregated, but in others I don't think that it is a bother. It many cases, sports don't rely on strength, but speed and agility, which many women probably have over many men.
