TVD is a story of a teenage girl Elena Gilbert whose life takes an upside down turn for better or for worse in a way she thought unimaginable. It’s her story along with the story of many others who all find and lose themselves through the course of time. Stefan Salvatore is the chip, the block who brings these scattered pieces to her life which change her world forever. Damon Salvatore is a mystery that only unravels itself bit by bit with time.
Stefan and Elena meet at a point in life where they both share a lot of grief, emptiness and loneliness owing to their loss of life in the form of family. Stefan is all by himself with an on and off brother while Elena is left as a lost girl with a younger brother and a struggling aunt to care for. Clearly, pain connects them. They become each other’s escape in this otherwise miserable life of death. They love each other but are they in love? Debatable! The deal with them is easy. They are alike, they trust and respect each other’s choices, find comfort in each other and that’s pretty much it. There’s no challenge, no conflict, no thrill. They haven’t discovered and explored the dark, the crazy side of their personalities yet, especially Elena. They seek more but don’t admit it even to themselves. Elena feels safe with Stefan but not complete. Also, they are more sealed and connected by the whole doppelgänger destiny thing than by the Heart. Yes, they do love each other and are very much in sync as a couple but something’s missing. You just feel it. Calling them “epic” seems like an overstatement. Stefan lives upto Elena’s standards far too well, which maybe is the problem. He’s too good for her. She wants challenge. And she finds that in Damon. Stefan and Elena are more of best friends who love each other and share a pure conflict-free bond for the most part and when the conflicts arise, they drift apart. When Stefan turns off his humanity switch and turns into a ripper, even though Elena doesn’t give up on him and brings him back, she no more feels the same about him. Her feelings change. The same way when Elena turns into a vampire, Stefan can’t seem to connect with her like he did earlier either. She’s more of a project for him that needs to be fixed. Of course he’s doing it for her but he’s doing it for himself as well for he likes her better as a human. When things get tough, they lose their way together. With Delena, that’s never the case. It doesn’t matter if Damon is on a killing spree or whether Elena is a human or a vampire, their feelings for each other NEVER change. They always find their way back to each other. Always!
Damon-Elena’s opposite of a gentleman is the one who twists and turns her notions of right and wrong in ways which force her to grow up. The best part? She lets him. Damon grows on Elena from the very beginning. He gets into her skin way before she admits it. Damon is her wake up call. She goes from a naive, confused, cry baby to a head strong, confident and clear headed woman who can call milk from water, thanks to Damon and the challenges he brings along. They have an undeniable chemistry right from the time he teases and flirts with her all as part of his bad boy charm and despite trying her hardest not to, she falls for it. She only fesses upto it after much later as she feels bad for emotionally cheating on Stefan all along. Damon and Elena had been together even before they were together. They had been Delena all along. I’ll tell you why:
The whole debate to blow off Damon and Elena as a couple is mainly based on three factors:
•Her sire bond to Damon
•Her transition to a vampire
•They’re only a hook up on mindless sex
I’ll explain to you how all of these reasons are illogical to demean Elena as a couple but rather prove the point of them being the endgame further.
As the witch found by Klaus tells Stefan, the sire bond is only triggered when the person being sired has feelings for the person who they’re sired to thus clearly stating that Elena already had feelings for Damon since long ago which triggered the sire bond, NOT the opposite. The sire bond doesn’t control the way she feels about Damon, it only controls her actions as explained by Tyler meaning her feelings for Damon are unaffected by the bond. Also, Damon out of all the people is the most desperate to break the sire bond because he wants to know if what they have is the real deal or not. Also, he never takes advantage of her being sired to him, rather he makes sure that it doesn’t sabotage her relationship with Stefan. He even asks her to switch off her humanity to ease her pain not caring that her feelings for him would be gone too.
Coming to her transition into a vampire. It doesn’t take a genius to put it together that becoming a vampire does NOT change your personality but rather heightens the already dominating aspects within you. It also heights how you feel, including your suppressed feelings. And HENCE, Elena’s attraction towards Damon increases further after she turns into a vampire. Yes, she chose Stefan before she turns but if you pay attention, you’ll realise that even then she’s only making excuses rather than a confession. She is crying as if it’s breaking her heart while trying to justify her decision to Damon that things could be different had they met before. She wants Damon, it’s clear but her faulty notions of right and wrong and her guilt are too strong to let her do it. Again, she’s also been compelled by Damon to forget their first meeting so there goes her excuse and also his love confession to her which had she remembered would have played a huge role in her decision. Had she stayed a human, her emotions would have caught up to her sooner or later anyway. Vampirism only quickened the process.
Now to shed a little light on Delena as a couple, let me tell you why they are the REAL DEAL. For whatever little I’ve known about love in my 23 years long existence on this earth and keeping in mind it’s as subjective as it gets, it’s safe to say that love takes time. Even love at first sight. You can fall in love with someone instantly or you can take all the time in the world. But growing, developing and nurturing that love TAKES TIME. And that’s what happened with Delena. They took time and their bond only got better and stronger. They loved each other DESPITE each other. She loved him with all his rage, evil and danger. She understood why he’s so conflicted and impulsive. She saw the hurt and vulnerability behind his selfish actions which acted as the trigger. She never justified his actions but understood his reasons nonetheless THUS giving him a reason, a chance at good because she saw potential. He wasn’t pure evil. He was more like a wounded lion on the look out or a typical teenager acting out only his ways were murderous and needed to be kept in check which she did manage to do while keeping it real that she won’t transform his entire personality upside down. He despite all his cynicism and sadism, despite his kink for the bad and the dangerous, despite his boredom at black and white fell for her exactly for who she was. He loved the human Elena as much as he loved her vampire version. Yes, it’s true he’d rather let her be a vampire than a human because that literally meant forever but that never altered the way he felt for her and once he realised how badly she wanted to be a human, he left no stones unturned to let that happen not once but twice. He bloody gave up the thing he loved the most- his vampirism, for her because loved her more, THE MOST. He was ready to put a dagger through her heart during her transition because he knew how much being a vampire would kill her. Time and again, despite his selfish and self-centred personality, he was willing to walk away and let her go if it meant to keep her out of harm’s way even though it made him miserable while being there for her in times of need. He also always put her first, chose her above all and took her decisions for her even if it came at a cost of him saving her life. Meaningless sex, you call it? That’s love-right in its purest form. They brought out the best in each other while working on their worst. They NEVER gave up on each other or their relationship for real. They both stepped up and did things for and with each other nobody would ever imagine them doing. Damon finally learned to care for others and Elena learned to listen to her own voice and live a little for herself. He gave her wings. She gave him roots. And it was all wrapped in naked honesty and an effortless drive to stay together. They loved each other without wanting to change each other and ended up changing each other for the better without even trying. That’s real love. That’s the real deal. It’s either everything or nothing. You can’t settle. There’s no in between. Delena knew that too well and were deep in it nonetheless. They made each other feel alive. The sex is nothing but a bodily act of exchanging love, something a perverted mind won’t understand. Their sex was passionate because their love was passionate. How difficult is that to understand? She Goddamn compelled all of his memoirs out of her mind and yet the moment he came back, they became inevitable instantly. She found her way back to him even though she didn’t remember a thing about her love for him and he was there for her all along letting her take her time. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is.
That’s what makes Delena the real deal, the endgame, the true love-they love each other despite each other and NEVER give up on each other.
