I have always felt that if a fan show dislikes certain aspects and the direction of said show, that said fan should at least respect the show’s writers and their creative decisions…and if the fan cannot do that, then he (or she) should simply stop watching said show.
Which leaves me in a bit of a quandary. I have lately found myself losing respect for Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the head writers and co-creator’s of ABC’s Once Upon A Time. It isn’t just one thing that set this off, but a series of things, things which if only one had been an issue, I would be fine, but the accumulation of all of them is making it hard for me to keep by cool and to not lash out at both of these men.
In an interview a while back one of them (I can’t remember which one) said that they intended to tell this story the way they thought it should be told and hoped the fans liked it. I took that to mean that they wouldn’t be catering to the needs and the desires of the fans and I respected that…but lately I’ve come to think that they did not mean it.
For one thing, it seems to me that there have been more intimate moments hinting at a possible relationship between Regina and Emma ever since a good portion of the shows fans of have come out and admitted to shipping Regina and Emma together. At the beginning of the first season, I would have said that there is no way that those two would ever (or should ever) end up together, but as we are now part way through season 2, I’m not so sure anymore.
It feels like a similar situation between Hook and Emma. I get the feeling the only reason the writers keeping hinting at a possible romantic relationship between Hook and Emma is because a good portion of the fans are hoping for it to be so, despite the fact that Hook would be a poor boyfriend and that Emma would (most likely) only end up with a broken heart.
Plus, it seems like every shipping group in the entire fandom (with glaringly obvious exception of Gremma), has had their moments this season.
Speaking of Gremma, let’s talk about Graham for a second. He’s now been dead for over a season and hasn’t been mentioned since the episode after he died. It’s like either he never existed in the first place or the rest of the characters simply had their memories of him erased. This isn’t the first show where I’ve seen this happen, and it has always been one of my top pet peeves.
Not only is Graham dead, but he was murdered! And his murderer is looking to get away with it…not just this season, but the entire show (unless things change drastically). I don’t mind Regina trying to redeem herself, but her redemption should not get in the way of her being brought to justice for his murder.
The writers themselves once said that Graham/The Huntsman was the DNA of the show…yet they don’t act like it. If he is such an important character as they say he is, why should the woman responsible for his death be allowed to get away with it? Once again, I’m afraid it is because many of the show’s fans love Regina and would literally throw a temper tantrum if anything were to happen to her.
I’m not going to lie: I’m a huge Gremma shipper and have been ever since I first starting watching the show. Now before some of you go and say that I’m biased, I’ll like to say that I have several other shows that I watch where my favorite ship didn’t get a happy ending…and I still watch them, because as much as I dislike the fact that those ships sunk, I still respect the writers of those shows. As I stated earlier, I feel like every other shipping group as had their happy moments. The last time any Gremma shipper was happy watching the show was when The Huntsman briefly appeared in the season one finale.
I feel like Gremma has been pushed off to the side and forgotten about. Shortly after Graham’s death, Edward Kitsis said in an article that “all great relationships start off with hope, and the hope that it can overcome any obstacle. What greater obstacle is there than death?” That lead myself and many other Gremma shippers to believe that it was Kitsis and Horowitz’s plan to resurrect Graham. After all, how can anyone say that and then not bringing him back?
And then there was Graham’s Letter. For those of you who don’t know that that is, there was an OUAT related game released over the summer with untold stories. One of them was a letter by Graham to Emma. It was so beautiful and moving. As the writers were behind the game, we all assumed we could count the letter as canon. Once again we thought that was a sure sign that Graham would be resurrected.
Another thing that led us to believe we would see Graham again was that the actors themselves were not at liberty to say whether or not we would. We reasoned that if Graham weren’t returning than the actors would just come out and say so, but they couldn’t. Just as they could not confirm his return, they could not deny it either.
All of these things led me and other Gremma shippers to believe that it was always Kitsis and Horowitz’s intention of bring Graham back to life…but now we hear that that is not so. They say they can’t bring Graham back because “everyone would say we were messing with continuity. We don’t want to do that.” That every quote proves that they are listening to what the fans feel and think.
I believe they had intended to bring Graham back, but then many fans moved on from Graham and now want Emma either with Hook or Neal, and that’s what disgust me. I would like to think the best of Kitsis and Horowitz, but right now I am unable to do
so.
And if they never ever intended to bring him back, then why did they lead so many of us on so? They knew full well that they were giving us hope. Gremma fans have suffered more than any other shipping group in this fandom and so for us to now be told that Graham wouldn’t be returning, it feels like a personal slap in the face. And it hurts!
I like to think the best of people, but after this I’m afraid I can’t. Yet part of me is still hoping that Graham will return…that either Kitsis and Horowitz were lying through their teeth when they said they wouldn’t bring him back…or that they will in fact change their minds. Either way, my respect for these two gentlemen has lessened.
I still do plan to finish this season, but as to whether or not I will continue to watch the show after that remains to be seen.
