It's a Wonderful Life has always been my favorite movie. It has everything that makes a movie great:
Jimmy Stewart, beautiful Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore as a villain to the last frame. The story and plot are fantastic as is the ending. I cry every time I watch it.
Empire Records on the other hand has, or had when it was made, just a cast of nobodies, a poor excuse for a bad guy-Mitch, and a silly storyline. What it has that few movies have is a fantastic score, a playlist that is ever present even during the quietest times, a song listing that identifies the movie.
A couple years back I made a playlist of all the songs I could find in their entirety. This music is an integral part of the movie, each song indelibly fused with the scene.
And before you say, oh,the music makes the movie, I need to mention the actors. How many female actors would have suggested that they shave their head foe plot developement ?
True, it's a silly movie, but I always feel so good as I watch it,no matter haw many times. That's what makes a great movie!
