The battlefield of the fight between FaithClan and RiverClan was bloodstained scarlet. Some cats lay dead on the floor, some still fighting, some not being able to move, some running away, and some watching.
"Bristlestar, you can't die!" cried a Warrior.
Faithheart, the deputy, heard this exclaim and ran around the fighting, to her leader's body, sprawled out on the ground. Blood swelled out of Bristlestar's neck and flank. His breathing was shallow, and he was opening his eyes with effort.
"Faithheart, is that you?"
"Yes, Bristlestar."
"I am on my last life, Faithheart," said Bristlestar weakly, "Don't look at me like that. You can't help me. But please, stop this battle. You will be a great Leader."
"No, you can't die! I won't let you!" cried Faithheart, but it was too late.
Bristlestar's flank stopped moving. His eyes became clouded. Faithheart laid her head on his body.
We'll never forget you. You were a great Leader. May StarClan walk your path.
Twelve moons had passed. Faithheart was now Faithstar. She had stopped the endless battles between RiverClan and her own Clan. Faithstar stood on the High Tree, and gazed up at the stars. She fought she could see Bristlestar walk among the sky. A breeze ruffled Faithstar's ears.
We will never forget you, Bristlestar.
Bristlestar turned to Faithstar and smiled. Then he vanished, back above the starry night sky.
