(Please do excuse me for having 3 of my OC's in here but I'm short on deaths so to speak so... You'll see what I mean)
The car pulls up a gravel pathway, the garden is overgrown with various weeds and bramble, nevertheless, an old sycamore stands vigilantly among the tangled vines. The house appears in no better state. Ivy conceals most of it's features but dangles off the porch, forming a dark archway, beckoning the unwary to enter the domain.
Other than the plants, the only other signs of life at the house is a sickly looking pigeon, curled up on the branches of the sycamore, but, it flies away no sooner than the car is in sight.
One by one, everyone pours from the car, eager to get exploring.
Shine takes a deep breath and sighs happily. “Ah, fresh air. Nothing better than getting out of the city into the countryside, right guys?”
Kiva and Amber exchange glances, briefly with confused expressions.
“Yeahhh... right...” Amber replied slowly, before stretching. “I guess it is, kinda nice. So? Where's the key?”
Emma stood momentarily in thought before closing her eyes and sighing frustrated. “Argh! I KNEW I was forgetting something!”
Lexii rolled her eyes and smiled, “No worries, there's gotta be another way in. Maybe it's not even locked, who knows”.
With that in mind, they proceeded to the front door. Much to their amazement and relief, it was unlocked.
Once inside, they could plainly see it needed a lot of work. The wood was damp with rot whilst large cobwebs occupied the ceilings and hallways. Though, this is only what they could see in the hallway. The rest of the house was pitch black due to the mass of brambles at the windows.
“See? It's not so bad...” Emma tried to remain positive throughout. She was determined to see it through.
“Ooh my god, ooh my god oh my god oh my dear god!” Hybrid however? Had the complete opposite on her mind. “A-Are those cobwebs?” She cowered behind the group.
Kaitlyn strained her eyes to see through the gloom, “Where's a cobweb?”
“There...” Hybrid shivered and pointed up at the ceiling, slightly right of where Kaitlyn was standing.
“Blimey, they're everywhere!” Kaitlyn now felt rather scared herself.
“I think they are. Are you afraid of spiders or something?” Shine replied softly, much unlike her usual tone.
Hybrid didn't reply but merely nodded.
“Aww, don't worry. Those webs look pretty old, the spiders that made them are probably long gone”. Shine reassured.
“Okay, seriously?” Emma replied though trying not to sound too harsh to harm her feelings.
“Yeah, it's not like you to be so nice... Usually, you'd say: Oh don't worry, those spiders are probably hibernating, waiting for something juicy to come by to sink it's fangs into or-” Amber mocked but stopped seeing as it was scaring Hybrid even more.
“Hey come on, Shine's right. Those spiders probably left by now”Tressa was eager to get moving.
“So, who's unpacking the stuff?” Lexii asked.
“More importantly, who'll get those webs down?” Kaitlyn shrugged “Because I hate cobwebs. Even worse if they get in your feathers”
“Don't be such hatchlings, I'll get them down” Amber rolled her eyes and snapped a branch from the tree to get the webs down.
Half an hour later, she emerged covered in webs and dust. “Not a word...”
“Is it safe to go in?” Kiva poked her head through the door. “No spiders or traps or anything?”
“She's alive isn't she? Must be safe” Lexii commented.
“Oh, yeah, I'm ok. I didn't fall through the floor or get eaten by giant spiders...” Amber replied, “Don't worry about my safety, no. Long as the spiders have their fill of me it's safe for you...” She wandered off back to the car in a huff.
“I'll talk to her...” Lexii said, following after.
“Can we go inside now?” Kiva was getting impatient, she wanted to explore the house. As did everyone else.
They decided to split up. Emma, Kirin, Kiva and Bandit explored the ground floor whilst Shine, Hybrid, Tressa and Kaitlyn went upstairs.
“Ooh, we could have a games room here... Or maybe here? No that's too small isn't it... What about this room?” Kaitlyn went hyper, imagining all the possibilities along with the space.
“Calm down, you'll get hurt if you carry on like that” Tressa laughed as Kaitlyn ran across the hall from room to room.
Meanwhile, Lexii had found Amber, sat on a pile of wood in the back of the car.
“Amber... Are you ok?” Lexii asked softly, seeing she was clearly upset.
“No it's nothing... Just, none of you seemed bothered whether I was ok or not” Amber replied, wiping her eyes.
“You were the bravest of all of us” Lexii put her paw on Amber's shoulder, “You went in there without a care in the world. None of us would have done that.”.
Amber smiled, “I guess you're right...”
“Then come on, let's get-” Lexii was cut off by screaming from the house. Without further thought, they ran back inside.
Amber and Lexii burst through into the hall, where the screaming turned into laughing. They exchanged glances and entered the first room though they weren't quite expecting what they saw...
Emma, Bandit and Kiva were on the floor, laughing up at the ceiling. Kaitlyn had stood on a rotten board and fallen halfway through, her legs dangling through the ceiling.
“Don't just laugh help me!” Kaitlyn yelled, kicking frantically.
Lexii and Amber couldn't help but laugh as well. After all, it's not every day you see a penguin's backside dangling through the ceiling...
