Yahoo!, the mammoth online portal, is in the concert biz now, with a new tour that played the Pageant on Wednesday night.
Yahoo! On the Road is hitting 27 cities; the twist is that each city gets a different headliner. John Legend, Kendrick Lamar, Fall Out Boy, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the Lumineers are among the headliners in various cities. Imagine Dragons and Owl City performed at the St. Louis stop.
Imagine Dragons sold out the Pageant in March; Owl City also played the Pageant in March in a separate show, making the Yahoo! On the Road selections for St. Louis look a little unfair. We couldn’t get at least one act who didn’t just play here?
But it was a free party, so we’re done quibbling.
Imagine Dragons brought the fun, as Las Vegas bands tend to do, during the band’s set at the Pageant. It also could be said that the band brought the fun along with bits of Passion Pit and other trendy bands.
But there was no denying the passion or the good time the percussion-heavy band brought to the stage, led by a bouncy Dan Reynolds, who was light on his feet and all over the place.
Imagine Dragons made sure fans stayed on their feet with songs such as “Tiptop,” “Radioactive,” “Hear Me,” “Round and Round,” “Cha-Ching (Till We Grow Older)” and “Rocks,” some culled from the band’s “Night Visions” album.
Many songs were punched up with big drum finales featuring drummer Daniel Platzman accompanied by Reynolds banging an upright drum placed front and center.
The party slowed down so the band could dedicate a segment of the show to Imagine Dragons fan Tyler Robinson, with a nod to the Tyler Robinson Cancer Foundation that helps families fight childhood cancer.
The pace remained slower for anthemic ballad “Demons” before the band amped back up for “On Top of the World.”
“Nothing Left to Say” wrapped up the 75-minute show, but no one would have been angry if it had gone on a little longer.
“I love this city; we went to a Cardinals game the other day,” Reynolds told the crowd at one point. (He also gave a shout-out to Pappy’s Smokehouse, though he kept calling it Paddy’s.)
Reynolds, wearing a brace on his hand, revealed he broke his hand a few weeks ago on tour in Berlin, but said he was OK. “It just looks stupid.”
He thanked the band’s St. Louis fans for being there from the beginning four years ago when Imagine Dragons began releasing various EPs.
Fans were able to get free tickets to the show at the Yahoo! On the Road bus, which stopped at locations around the city.
