Michael was now nine years old. He was swiftly jogging home while holding his football firmly in his right arm. All of a sudden he stopped. He walked back a few steps. Then he looked to his right. On that wall there was a poster. It said “Hakuren Jr. football club, looking for members 12 and below. Tri-outs on the 16th of December.” His eyes went wide open as he grew with excitement. Tri-outs was just one week away and he wanted to be in top form. He ran back home in order to ask Fubuki if he should go to the tri-outs.
Michael expected Fubuki to say yes and so he did. Michael pushed himself to the limits so he would be able to surpass all the challenges that followed him. He knew most of the kids who would try out would be older than him. If he wanted a place in the squad he would have to train his heart out. That was exactly what he did every day. Tri-outs were just 3 days away and Michael was feeling more confident than ever, but he didn’t let that get in the way of his training. Just a few hours of training on that day and there were bad news. Michael was frustrated and was not satisfied no matter how hard he tried. He felt he had to try even harder.
Michael went a little too far with his training. With only 2 days left Michael hurt his ankle. He was furious and at the same time disappointed. He didn’t want to stop. “It can’t be all over. I won’t give up. I have to train and make it into the team.” That’s when Fubuki stopped Michael. “Enough! Do you really think further training with an injury is going to help you recover? Enough training, you are going to relax until the day of the tri-outs” Michael didn’t like it, but he followed Fubuki’s advice.
Michael: At last the day if finally here!
Fubuki: Are you ready?
Michael: of course I am. I’m feeling better than ever!
Michael and Fubuki reached the football field where the tri-outs were being held. And as soon as they went in Michael froze.
Michael: uh….umhhh….
Fubuki: what’s wrong?
Michael: look how many people showed up. Look how much bigger they are. Do you think I’ll make it into the squad?
Fubuki: of course you will. You love football with all your heart. You stopped training for this. You will definitely make it!
They were split into two teams. The whistle was blown and the other team took kick-off. All throughout Michael was amazing. He showed skill, speed, agility, strength, stamina and most of all determination. He proved himself to be a great leader, able to see the whole field at once, able to read the opponents every move, the mental strength to take on any player no matter their intimidating size. He was unstoppable. The whistle was blown for the end of tri-outs.
The coach walked forward.
Coach: Now I and my colleagues examined each of your movement. We have come to a conclusion. On this piece of paper I’m holding I have written the 15 names of the people who have made the squad. I will now read out the names of the 15 people who made the squad in a random order.
He names 14 of them.
Coach: last, but not least……… the final member of the squad is…………
