She rose her tail and gave the signal. The cats stampeded forward, heading for Foursquare. It was the IvyClan warriors, heading for the Gathering. The other Clans were already there. There was Tinyspirit, of BrushClan; Pebblestar of CreekClan; and Gougespirit of ThistleClan. Leopardstar sighed. They were last. Again.
"Hello to all," began Pebblestar without waiting. "CreekClan has prospered over the past moon. We are doing well." The CreekClan cats cheered.
"Yes," added Tinyspirit. "SpiritClan has looked kindly upon us, this season. BrushClan has plenty of prey and little problems."
Leopardstar nodded. "We have two new kits, Ferretkit and Siltkit, and a new apprentice, Woodpaw." The IvyClan cats cheered at the naming. "We welcome them to the Clan."
But Gougespirit stepped forward, his fur bristling. "ThistleClan is suffering!" he hissed. He turned to Leopardstar. "How dare you? How dare you send warriors to infiltrate us! How dare you cross our borders and hunt our prey!"
Bramblemask of BrushClan rose to his feet. "Who would want to hunt the way you do?" he called up to the bigrock. "On the open moor with little of no shade. The rabbits move fast through your open lands."
He was right, Leopardstar reflected. Although she didn't like the shrub and brush filled forests of BrushClan and CreekClan, she DID enjoy the shade of the pine trees, and the soft pine needles that littered the clean floor. To live on cold, heat bearing ThistleClan territory would be too much for her.
"Gougespirit, I promise you in the name of SpiritClan that we aren't stealing prey."
He turned to snarl in her face, "You have no reason to swear to SPIRITCLAN! You're a Clan of preystealers and stalkers! We've got your SCENT across the border!"
Firetooth, the ThistleClan deputy rose to his feet in support of his leader. "SpiritClan destroy them!" he cried. "They are trying to push us down, but we WILL stand to their offensive behavior!"
"No," said Dawnfrost. "We are loyal warriors. Just because we are different than you doesn't make us evil."
"THIEVES!" Firetooth hissed at her. "You are darkhearted from the trees that surround you. Go back to the dark forest!"
"No," Dawnfrost defended. "We wouldn't do that! We're not darkhearted."
Before she cold say anymore, Firetooth leapt at her with a horrible screech. Dawnfrost shoved him back, but he kept going.
"Enough!" Leopardstar cried. "Gougespirit, we have told you the truth. It is your choice to mess with us." She felt herself shaking inwardly, and tried to push the cowardice away. "If you do not back down, you will face the rath of SpiritClan through my warriors."
...
Leopardstar sat beneath the Speakledge and overlooked the Clan. Her amber eyes were judging, and cold today. Everyone in the Clan knew that there was a battle on the brink. The ThistleClan warriors, especially their deputy Firetooth, were trying to cause trouble, and Leopardstar wasn't sure the Clan was ready for battle.
She stepped forward and moved toward the Medicine den. "Mistyflower," she called "Can I talk to you alone?"
The medicine cat nodded and the brushed out of the camp together. On her way out, Leopardstar called to Dawnfrost to watch the camp.
The two walked for some distance through the brush field. When they reached the shadows and protective cover of the Pine Forest, Leopardstar began to talk.
"As you can see, Mistyflower, there is a problem with ThistleClan. We might not have enough warriors. I'm not sure what to do about this. Do you think we should start training Ferretkit and Siltkit early? or give Woodpaw his warrior name? What do you think? I need advice."
The medicine cat glared sideways at her leader. "Ferretkit and Siltkit are only a couple moons old! Wait until they are at least six moons. There's a reason that law is in place. And Woodpaw...I'm not sure. I think it might be a little early yet. But if you want, I can go to the Spirit Lake and ask SpiritClan what they think."
Leopardstar sighed wearily. Too many battles. I might loose my first life, Mistyflower, to those wretches. What do you think I ought to do?"
Mistyflower rested her tail gently upon her leaders shoulder. "I'll go to the Spirit Lake..."
