End of Chapter 5
"Carlisle?" My father's voice called, breaking my train of thought.
"Yes, sorry. What were you saying?"
"I asked you to come by and hang the cross before you go out looking for the demons tonight." He said, once again looking sad.
"Yes, I will stop by." I said as I rubbed my already weary eyes.
"Good, and Carlisle...Charlies is going to lead the hunt tonight. Please just watch what he does then next time you will be the leader."
"I will." I said, incredibly happy that I was not going to be the one leading tonight, but one of the followers.
Father excused himself, reminding me on the way out that I was expected at church. He also reminded me to stop and pray that God be with me, that he watch over me and send the demons back to hell...I wish that would have been true.
Chapter 6
I was so lost in my own thoughts of vampires, witches and wolves that I didn't realize I had a visitor until they cleared their throat, breaking me of my trance. I blinked a few times as I focused on the face that was now going to sit across from me.
I did not recognize the person who was now sitting at the table, hands folded neatly in front of him. He looked to be about my age and height, except for the fact that he was pale. His skin was a shade of white that made him look ill, I wondered if that was why he had come..to get last rights.
"I'm sorry," I said as I stood up and smiled at him. "Were you looking for my father?"
"You are the one they call Carlisle?" He asked, his accent very thick.
"Yes, I am Carlisle." I said, wondering where he was from.
"Carlisle, I am here to give you a warning." He said and as I looked at him I fought the urge to gasp.
In that one second I was suddenly scared, I realized that this person was not just a traveler...but something much worse. His blood red eyes stared directly into mine, a laugh escaping his lips as he watched the fear cross my face. I took a step back unconsciously and when my foot stepped back the man shot out of his chair, his hands outstretched as he pinned me against the wall.
"You know what I am now?" He asked as he grinned.
"I believe I do." I said, my throat suddenly dry.
"Then you know that my warning should be listened to. Carlisle do not go looking for my kind, leave us be. We do not want to fight but if there is the need we will defend ourselves and that would not be good." He said as he leaned down and sniffed my neck like a dog.
"We don't want a war," I said as I tried to get my voice to work again. "We just want to live in peace."
"I do not believe that our kind can co-exist, call it survival of the strongest." He said as he flexed his hand which was resting on my chest, his fingers scratching my skin through my shirt which made me cry out in pain.
"Please," I cried out. "Please let me go."
"I will let you go this one time," He said as he stepped back, his hands folded in front of him again. "Do not come looking for us. If you do, you will all die."
I nodded at him, knowing that I could not fight him and that arguing would not e beneficial. He laughed quietly as he turned and ran out the door, melting into the night as if he were never here. I stood there, leaning against the wall for a minute before I gathered myself together enough to check the marks on my chest.
It looked like someone had clawed my chest against bare skin, not through the layers of clothing I had on. I was instantly terrified, the reality of everything that had just happened smashing into me at once. I had to get to church, had to get to my father...he would know what to do.
