The Malcolm in the Middle writers, and other uses of the Krelboyne as a name for nerds, etc. was inspired by the nerdy character Seymour Krelboyne, of Little Shop of Horrors (which was changed to Krelborn in the musical version)

Krelboyne is the name of the teacher of that class so the kids were all called Krelboynes.

Actually, the name comes from famous nerd Seymour Krelboyne, star of link. The name of their first teacher was actually Lionel Herkabe.

It's a reference to nerdy Seymour Krelboyne.

The first teachers' name is Caroline Miller and the second teachers' name was Lionel Herkabe, he was a Krelboyne, his name wasn't Krelboyne

The important thing is why the creators picked a nickname for them at all- it gives them a politically correct slang term that be used positively or negatively without offending any real people. It was a pretty awesome strategy!

it was definitely meant negatively as a derogatory term, but you bring up a good point that they made their own word up so they could get away with making fun of smart/geeky/nerdy people without it being clear and offending smart geeks/nerds
