So last night I was watching the Hunger Games, simultaneously thinking about all the things I blogged about on Tumblr. I watched Katniss volunteer for Prim and something hit me.
Katniss Everdeen is Dean Wincheter.
Primrose Everdeen is Sam Winchester.
And Mrs. Everdeen is John Winchester.
I backed up a bit and asked myself how on earth I came up with that comparison. Well here's how.
Katniss and Dean are both the eldest children in a broken family, Sam and Prim are the younger ones, and Mrs. E. and John are single parents.
When the mother/father died in each family, the oldest child had to take care of the entire family.
Katniss and Dean both began hunting - but in different meanings of the word.
As little kids, whatever extra food Dean got he gave to Sammy, handed over his own Christmas and birthday presents. Katniss does whatever she can to make sure Prim is safe. She comforts her, she looks after her, she puts her name in extra times for the reaping.
One of the main things I'm trying to put out there is that Katniss and Dean both distrust, maybe even hate, their surviving parent. Katniss knows Prim is the only person she really loves; every single thing she does is out of love for her and to promise she'll be safe and sound. Mrs. Everdeen left her daughters to fend for themselves when her husband died, and now Katniss knows she won't forgive her.
And Dean hates his son-of-a-bitch father for making him and his baby brother what they are: cold and ruthless killing machines, hunters, monsters. In fact, Dean doesn't even call his old man "dad", or even "John", oh no. It's always "Sir." They've been brought up from day one to kill every ghost, demon, and creature they can to find out what killed Mary and avenge her death. Dean always got punished for letting Sammy get hurt while on a hunt. If I was Dean, I would probably hate my father and myself.
Well, my little rant is over, hope I didn't make you too sad ahah.
