Chapter 5 ; Ghost town
The next morning Amelia found herself staring at the tv-screen without seeing anything. She'd basically stayed up all night, and now she was supposed to go to work. Of course she could just say she's in pain, but she needed the money - they needed the money. But she wasn't at all sure if she wanted to see Andrew. She wasn't sure that.. She just wasn't sure.
"Hey, whatcha doing?" She was broken from her thoughts by Riley, who'd entered the living room. Amelia hadn't told her about the kiss.
"Nothing. Just thinking."
"About going to work? You shouldn't", Riley shook her head. "Unless you want to see Andrew."
"Yeah, well, he kissed me", Amelia said, and Riley paused.
"WHAT? And you didn't tell me?" she gasped.
Amelia sighed. She wasn't like this. She didn't throw herself into a relationship like Riley. Not anymore. And she didn't want to ruin her relationship with Andrew, whatever it was. Because sooner or later, he'd leave her, in one way or another.
"You didn't.. like it?" Riley asked in confusion and sat next to Amelia.
"Of course I did. I've been waiting for that kiss for like 4 years now. It's not that", she replied. "It's just that... I don't know what it meant to him."
"What did he say?"
"He asked me out", Amelia groaned. "And I'm going to see him soon, and tell him yes. Because of course I'm going to tell him yes. I've never been able to say no to him. And I don't want to", she turned to look at Riley. "What is this funny feeling in the pit of my stomach?"
Riley smirked. "Could it be that you're happy?"
Amelia paused, and then smiled. "Yeah, you know.. I think it could be", she took the cane from beside the couch and got up painfully. Well, I'm heading off to work, do your homework because I know you haven't done any this weekend and DO NOT get into any trouble, do you hear me?"
"Yup, Amelia's back." Riley thought as she rolled her eyes.
Riley was laying down on her bed, face down, completely bored. She had finished all of her homework and now didn't know what to do. "Being grounded sucks" she thought, when she heard a knock on her window. "What the hell?"
Riley got up to look and saw Mason, "Oh my god Mason what are you doing here!?" she screamed as she opened the window to let him in.
"I just wanted to check up on you, yesterday was pretty bad and I thought it would be best to not call you..."
"Yeah, yesterday was really bad, " Riley sighed. "But Amelia seemed to figure out that there's really nothing she could do about it, but I'm grounded for a week."
"I'm sorry" Mason said sympathetically has he kissed her.
"No, it's not your fault, I actually can't believe we were stupid enough to do something in my house" Riley laughed. Mason just laughed and hugged his girlfriend. Happy that she was alright.
"So guess, who I hung out with yesterday, and was nice too?" Mason asked changing the subject with a proud smile as he went and laid down on her bed.
"Who?" Riley asked curiously as she sat down next to him.
"Jacob."
"What no way!" Riley squealed excitedly. "How did this happen?"
"Well, after Amelia freaked out and kicked me out, I saw him coming towards your house, and I figured it'd be best if he didn't enter----"
"Good thought" Riley said interrupting him.
"Yeah, so I somehow convinced him to come and shoot some hoops with me and he agreed, and it wasn't that bad." Mason said smiling at her.
"Aww, I'm so proud of you" Riley said smiling and leaning down to kiss him when suddenly the door bell rang.
"Who is that?" Mason asked.
"I don't know, but you NEED to hide" Riley said shoving him into the closet.
Mason chuckled and got in Riley's roomy closet, where she basically shoved him, before she marched up the door.
When she opened the door, she froze. There was a strange man at the doorway, with a closed letter in his hand. He smiled a charming smile when he saw Riley, but she merely stared. Both Amelia and their mother had taught her not to trust strangers.
"Yes?"
"Amelia Grace?" the man asked, and Riley shook her head. "No, I'm her sister. Can I help you?"
"Maybe you can", the man said, handing Riley the letter. "I was actually looking for your mother, Sarah Grace, but I happened to misplace her address. So.. If you or your sister could be so kind to deliver that letter to her, without opening it, naturally, you'd be doing me a great favour", Riley tried to see through his smile, but all she saw was the man in front of her, so she shook her shoulders.
"Why not? Have a nice day", with that Riley closed the door, tempted to open the letter, but placed it on the table near the door instead. It was Amelia's business, this was her house.
Amelia got out of her car carefully and walked out to the parking lot where she and Andrew had agreed to meet.
"Hey", she said awkwardly as she limped to him, leaning on her stick.
"Hey. How's your leg?" Andrew asked, concerned.
"It's fine", Amelia said. "So.. Uh.. What's the case?"
Andrew smiled.
"What?"
"Yeah, you're not coming with me. I just wanted to meet you here so I can hear your answer in person. And then I'm driving you home."
Amelia opened her mouth, but then knew it was stupid to protest.
"Well?" Andrew asked in amusement.
"My answer is- hold on!" Amelia snapped. "Are you sure.. Like, are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Fine. Then my answer is yes. I'll go out with you. Whatever", Amelia muttered and started walking back to her car already. She could tell that Andrew was walking alongside her, even though she refused to look at him.
"I'm not really good at this", she said as she entered the car, and Andrew sat in the driver's seat.
"Sitting?"
"No. Dating. So if you start hating me, that's not my problem. Because I warned you", Amelia muttered.
Andrew nodded. "Okay, then. I've been warned", he gave her a smile before starting the car and driving towards Amelia's apartment.
Riley ran to her room and grabbed Mason out of the closet.
"Who was that?" he asked curiously.
"I don't know some dude with some letter" she said rushed. "But now I'm scared that could have been anyone you need to leave now."
"Okay, okay fine" he said chuckling. "Riley Grace you're crazy, it's a good thing I love you" he said laughing and kissing her goodbye. He climbed out the window, winked at her and left.
Riley could only roll her eyes.
Suddenly, the door opened and Amelia walked in.
"Perfect timing" thought Riley. "Hey sis, what are you doing home already?" she asked curiously.
Amelia rolled her eyes, "Andrew wouldn't let me work. It was sweet I guess, but annoying. Soo...Riles. I accepted the date." Amelia said smiling!
"EEEEE NO WAY!!!" Riley squealed. "OMG this is going to be perfect! You two are going to be perfect!" Can I help you get ready?" she asked excitedly.
"Duh, who else?" Amelia laughed. "Hold up, I should call Belle and ask her to come over for back up and you know tell her the news."
"Yes do that! I'll go pick out dresses while you two talk!" Riley said excitedly. "Oh wait, Amelia! I forgot, some man in a suite came with some letter for mom, it's on the counter"
"What? What letter? What man?" Amelia asked worriedly.
"I don't know, it's on the counter!"
Amelia went and opened up the letter, reading it slowly. Her hands were shaking and her face turned completely pale.
"Amelia, you okay? Riley asked concerned by her sisters change in personality. "What does the letter say?"
"What---no I'm fine. And the letter is just something from one of moms old friends. Don't worry about it.
"Amelia---" Riley said not buying into what her sister said.
"Riley, stop. I said it was nothing. And besides aren't you supposed to be picking out a dress for me?"
"Yeah, I guess" Riley said still not sure. But she decided to let it go, it's not like Amelia was going to tell her anything anyways. She went into her sisters room to pick out a dress.
Amelia picked up her cell and dialed an all too familiar number "Hey, mom. It's me, Amelia. It's happening again."
The next morning Amelia found herself staring at the tv-screen without seeing anything. She'd basically stayed up all night, and now she was supposed to go to work.
