Chapter 12: She dreamed of paradise
It’s been three weeks since the men left again to war. And sanctuary was exactly the same again. Everyone was pacing and wondering what was going on. Rana had finally gotten a break from Cersei and went to go sit up against a wall. She’d been feeling unwell all day. Atie went and sat next to her sister.
“Am I stupid?”
“Yes.” Rana said flatly.
Atie rolled her eyes and shoved her sister slightly. “Rana, help me.”
Rana turned to look at her sister, “You’re falling for a boy who is engaged to our aunt, Atie, you’re stupid.”
“In my defense, I didn’t know he was engaged to our aunt when I fell for him.”
Rana laughed, “Of course you would see it that way.”
Atie smiled, “Rana, Jasper is going to be king after his father passes.”
“Yes, I am well aware.”
“Maybe….maybe if you talk to him, you can stop this engagement?” Atie asked hopefully.
Rana sighed and turned towards her sister and smiled sadly, “Atie, you know I would do anything to make you happy and I know being with this boy forever will make you happy. But Jasper is not king yet and by the looks of things this marriage is happening soon. Besides, Jasper and I….I don’t think we’re close enough yet for me to ask him for favors that intense.”
“You two are married.”
“You know what I mean.”
Atie sighed, “Yeah, you’re right. I’m just sad.”
Rana sighed and pulled her sister in for a one armed hug, “Yeah, I know. We’ll figure it out, okay?” She then groaned and threw her head back.
Atie pulled herself away from her sister and looked at her confused, “What’s wrong, you’ve been looking sick all day.”
“It’s because I feel sick.” Rana pouted. “Oh god, I think I’m going to puke!” Rana said quickly grabbing a pale next to her and letting it all out.
“Oh god.” Atie said worried now. “MOTHER! Mother, come here, somethings wrong with Rana.”
Rachel immediately came up to her daughter, Cersei right behind her.
“She has the sweating sickness and now she’s going to kill us all!” Cersei groaned throwing her hands up.
Rachel glared at her, “Will you shut your mouth.”
“Excuse me?”
“I am sick and tired of you constantly berating my daughter. Me I can handle, but leave my children alone.” She said roughly. She then went and sat next to Rana and felt her head. “You don’t feel warm. What are you feeling?”
“I feel nauseas, sick, and dizzy.” Rana complained. “Mom, I’m dying.” She said overdramatically.
Rachel smiled at her daughter.
“Why are you smiling, I’m sick!”
“Sweety, when was the last time you had your course?”
Rana raised her eyebrows, “Why is that even…oh.”
Atie stared at both her mom and sister confused, she then turned to see Cersei was beaming.
“What the hell is going on?” She demanded.
Rachel turned and smiled at her younger daughter. “Congratulations, you’re going to be an aunt. Your sisters pregnant.”
Atie’s mouth dropped, “Wow.” She then turned to look at Rana, “How do you feel about this she whispered to her?”
Rana turned to look at her sister, “Terrified.”
One Month and Half Later
The war was over. It was finally over. The Starks had won, but Jon had gotten away and went into hiding. Everyone was back safe and sound, everyone but King Liam who had unfortunately died in battle. Suddenly Jasper and Liam were thrust into new positions. Rana and Atie hadn’t gotten the opportunity to see either of them since they had gotten back. Jasper did not even know of Rana’s pregnancy yet. Even Robb, who was usually boasting and proud after a war was quiet and broken.
Robb was sitting in his chambers. He was on his desk working on something when Rachel walked in.
“Hello.” She said sitting down across from him.
Robb looked up at his wife and gave her a small smile he then turned back to his work.
Rachel sighed, “Listen, I’ve been trying to give you your space because I can’t even begin to imagine what battle was like, but don’t pull away from me. Tell me what’s been going on.”
Robb sighed and indicated for Rachel to come over to him. Rachel immediately stood up and walked over to him. Robb then pulled her down onto his lap. “I am okay. I’m just stressed. With King Liam’s death, Jasper is king and our daughter is queen. They have no idea what they’re doing and I need to make sure everything is settled for them before they both go back to the Sandstorms. I’m not trying to pull away from you.”
Rachel stared at him hard, “You’re lying to me.”
Robb sighed, “No, I’m not. I promise.” He pulled her down and placed a long kiss on her lips. “I love you and I missed you like crazy. I’m just figuring some things out.”
“I love you too.” Rachel said softly getting up. “I should go check on the boys.” She said pulling away from him.
“Rachel.” Robb said groaning, “Don’t be upset.”
“Then don’t lie to me.” She responded sternly walking out of the room.
Atie was walking through the halls of Winterfell with her two brothers, listening as Ned told her about how he was definitely going to fight in the next war. He said that he would ride beside father and take down Jon for good. And while Atie admired Ned's courage, she wondered if he really understood what taking a life meant. She hoped that he'd never have to.
While Ned spoke, Brandon said nothing, just stared at the ground as they walked. Atie frowned. "Are you alright, brother?"
Brandon looked up at his sister, and Atie could see that everything was not alright. So she reached forwards and touched his forehead. "You're burning up!"
Ned froze, watching as Atie lifted Brandon in her arms. "Does he have a fever?"
"I think so. Fetch mother and father! I'll take him to his room", Atie rushed off, running across the castle. As soon as she'd gotten him into bed, she wet a cloth and pressed it against his forehead. He seemed so little at that moment.
"Where are momma and daddy?" he asked with a quiet voice. And with that Rachel and Robb rushed into the room, moving to their son's side.
Atie gave her brother one last look before leaving the room, because she knew that there'd be no room for her with her parents and the physician in the room as well.
As soon as she got into the hallway, she burst into tears, burying her head in her hands. She quickly walked across the corner to a quiet one, not wanting anyone to see her tears.
It was very common for children to die of fever, so if he had already caught it...
Atie cried for a while, not really knowing what else to do. She didn't even notice as Liam sat next to her on the floor, wrapping an arm around her.
"He'll be alright", he whispered in her ear softly. "He's got the best physicians in the North looking after him."
"He better be alright", Atie whispered back. "He's my brother."
"I know", Liam pressed a kiss to her forehead as he held her close. "He'll be fine." He wasn't sure of this, but what else was there to say?
"You shouldn't be here", Atie muttered, trying to pull away, but Liam merely hugged her tighter.
"There's nowhere else I should be right now", Liam muttered as he kissed her cheek, and so they stayed like that for quite some time.
That night Rana was lying in bed, thinking about her brother, wondering what would happen to him. She had just gone to say goodnight to him, and he had still had a high fever. Both their parents were going to sleep next to him for the night, even though the physician warned that the fever might be contagious. Rana knew they didn't care about such things.
This all made her wonder about her own baby. Instinctively she pressed her hands against her belly, imagining one day sitting by the baby's bedside, holding its hand. But as she imagined it, all she could see was her brother's face, and his pale cheeks. She sighed, shaking her head, trying not to worry too much.
"I'm so sorry", she looked up to see Jasper standing by her bed, looking hesitant. "I went to see him. He seems to be doing alright. He's strong."
"He's not as strong as his brother", Rana said with a shaky voice. "He's always been little. What if-"
"He will not die", Jasper said as he sat next to her, taking her hands in his. "I won't let him."
"I don't think even you have a say in that", Rana muttered.
Jasper said nothing, just laid next to her on the bed, offering her the best comfort he could give. Which was to stay next to her, saying nothing.
"All I keep thinking about is... if something like this were to happen to our baby."
Jasper looked at her in shock. Rana hadn't even realized what she'd said, but it was too late to take it back.
"Our baby?" Jasper asked, trying to fight back a smile, since this was not a moment for smiles.
"Yes", Rana said as she turned to look at him. "I'm pregnant, Jasper."
And just like that Jasper's lips met hers, and they shared a sweet kiss before pulling back, Jasper pressing his forehead against Rana's.
"That's amazing", he whispered. "Oh, I'm so happy, my love."
Rana said nothing, just gave a sad smile. "I'll be happy when Brandon is safe."
Jasper nodded. "Of course." But he was overjoyed. The woman he was falling in love with was having their child. Who would one day be the king of the country. "I think it's a boy."
"I'm sure all men do", Rana yawned. "It could just as well be a girl."
"Then we'll love her just as much as we would a boy", Jasper said as he pulled her to him, kissing her forehead as they laid on the bed. "I will love this baby."
"We both will", Rana whispered, pressing her head against his chest as she slowly drifted off to sleep. And as she slept, she dreamt of her, Jasper, and their future son or daughter. And at least in her dream, the world was happy and good.
