The members of New Religion had been writing songs all day. Paul's dog, Nunavut, was more spunky than usual. Nunavut had been having slower days, but that day seemed to be a good day for him. He seemed happy, and he had been outside three times. When the members of New Religion finished their songs, they decided to go to the studio. Nunavut brought Paul his food bowl. Paul said, "I'll feed you when I get back, all right, Nunavut?" Nunavut wagged his tail in response. After recording a few songs, the members of New Religion returned to their house. Paul decided to feed Nunavut, and the band's mascot, Fritz. When Paul filled the bowls, Fritz immediately came running. Nunavut did not come. Paul called out, "Nunavut, where are you?" Nunavut didn't even make a sound. Paul searched throughout the house. Just when he was about to give up, he saw Nunavut lying next to his bed. Paul said, "Nunavut, I got your dinner ready. Are you going to get up?" Nunavut didn't stir. Paul went closer. "Nunavut?" Still nothing. As Paul looked closer, he saw that Nunavut wasn't breathing. Paul touched his beloved dog, but he was stiff. Paul wept like he hadn't wept in ages. Erin ran into Paul's bedroom and asked, "Are you okay?" Paul looked up and shook his head. He said, "Nunavut has passed. He must've died while we were at the studio." Erin said, "I'm so sorry, Paul." He said, "It's my fault. I should've fed him." She said, "It's not your fault, Paul. Nunavut was old and tired. He was ready." Paul continued to cry. Carl and Lola came in, and they expressed sympathy. Carl asked, "What are you going to do with Nunavut?" Paul said, "I'm going to have him cremated." Although his mates tried to tell him otherwise, Paul still believed that Nunavut's death was his fault.

Today at school, I had an experience I will never forget. I had just finished my lunch, and I went to throw something away. Suddenly, I heard someone shouting, "Somebody, help! My friend is choking!" I rushed to the scene. One of the kids looked up at me desperately and said, "I don't know what to do." I said, "But I do!" As I said that, I gave his friend a sharp blow between the shoulders. The boy was able to cough it up forcefully. Once he could talk again, he said, "Thank you." I said, "You're welcome. Are you okay?" He said, "Yeah." Later, I was getting ready to head home....

I am feeling much better today. I don't feel great, but I feel much better than I did a few days ago. I was able to go to school today. Michael, Sabrina, and Bridget helped me get caught up in my classes. I'm lucky to have such good friends. Of course, I did feel a bit tired after finishing my homework. I took a nap for a while. When I woke up, it was almost 6:00 pm. I didn't realize I had slept that long. When dinner time came, I ate really well. I didn't feel like eating much for the past couple of days. My appetite has returned. I think I will go to bed early tonight. I'm feeling pretty tired right now. I'm not completely better, but I'm close to it.

I missed school today, because I am sick. I picked up an upper respiratory infection as a result of my allergies to ragweed. It's the only thing I'm allergic to. Of course, of all things to be allergic to, I had to be allergic to something that's hard to avoid. I mean, ragweed pollen blooms in late August and spreads around from early September to the middle of November. How does one avoid that? Anyway, I started feeling bad yesterday, and last night, my aunt took me to the emergency room, because I had a terrible cough and sounded extremely hoarse. She said, "You could've...

Today was the first day of school. It was not a good day, or maybe it was, depending on how one looks at it. I got beat up, but I am glad that I took a beating for someone else. What happened was this. I saw some girls bullying the new girl. I walked up to the bullies and said, "Stop it! Why are you being so mean? What did this girl ever do to you?" The ring leader said, "Stay out of this, Grace! This doesn't concern you!" I said, "On the contrary, I think it does." Another one of the girls said, "She says she has Autism or some kind of enlightenment crap." I said, "That's no...

I saw The Devil Wants Peace in concert tonight. It was just as amazing as I imagined. My favorite moment in the concert was when they played "Hatred Will Get You Nowhere." I really like what John said about the song. He said, "This song is called 'Hatred Will Get You Nowhere.' I wrote this song along with Allen, Peter, and Stan. After we recorded the song, Peter said to me, 'It's a shame that we kill off our heroes and allow the evils of the world to enter.' I said, 'I agree with you, Peter.' He said, 'I'm no bloody genius. I never made anything above a B, but I think the world's...

I am currently in Chicago. I'm going to see The Devil Wants Peace in concert tomorrow. They're already in Chicago as well. This is how I know. After we got our things unpacked, my aunt, uncle, and I decided to go see what Chicago had to offer. We stopped to eat at a local restaurant. I looked over and noticed the members of The Devil Wants Peace were there. I said, "Oh, my gosh! It's The Devil Wants Peace!" My aunt suggested going over to talk to them. I said, "I don't want to bother them while they're eating." My uncle walked up to them and said, "My niece is a huge fan. She knows...

Summer Vacation has been great so far. While I've been enjoying school more since I've gained a couple of friends, it's nice to have a break from it. I also received some exciting news. On July 9, I am going to be in Chicago to see The Devil Wants Peace in concert! I was so excited when my uncle told me he was able to afford the tickets. I later told my friend, Michael, "You should have seen me when my uncle told me the good news. I was jumping up and down, crying tears of joy." Normally, I'm not that excitable, but The Devil Wants Peace is one of my favorite bands. Since I was six, I dreamed of seeing them live, and now, I can stop dreaming. This dream is becoming a reality. I don't know if I'll be lucky enough to meet them, but the fact that I'm lucky enough to see them is great.

I ran the mile in gym class today. I ran it quickly, because I wanted to get it over with. Unfortunately, I ran it more quickly than I should have. I felt awful afterwards. I was walking to my next class. Michael said, "Grace, you don't look so good. Are you okay?" I said, "No, not really." He asked what was wrong. I said, "I feel a little dizzy." The next thing I knew, I woke up in the nurse's office with Michael standing next to me, looking anxious. I said, "Oh, my God. What happened?" He said, "You fainted." I said, "I did?" The nurse said, "You did." I said, "Oh, God. How long...

Friday the 13th is associated with bad luck, but I think today, I had good luck. I have made friends with two kids in band, Michael, who plays the tuba, and Sabrina, who plays the flute. The three of us seem to get along really well. They're fans of the Beatles and The Devil Wants Peace, just like me. They're so nice, too. They were also impressed with the fact I can play multiple instruments: saxophone, guitar, bass, and piano. When it was time to go home, the saw me and said, "See you Monday, Grace!" I said, "Yeah, if not before then." They laughed. I'm glad that my luck is changing....

My birthday is normally a good day, but today was a bad birthday. It started when I was going downstairs for breakfast. Halfway down, I realized I left my glasses in my bedroom. I attempted to turn around and go back, but I lost my footing and tumbled backwards down the stairs. I didn't get hurt, but it scared the crap out of me. It scared my aunt, too. She asked if I was okay, and when I calmed down, I said that I was fine. If that wasn't bad enough, it was even worse at school. While I was doing my classwork, one of my classmates threw a paper airplane at me. It contained a nasty...

When Joanna woke up the next morning, she felt desperate for food. She stripped the bark of a nearby tree and found some insects. They were disgusting, but since it had been five days since she had eaten, Joanna didn't care. She drank from the stream to wash the taste of insects out of her mouth. She then pressed on to find her way back home. She found the steep hill where she had fallen. She struggled to climb the hill, but she managed to make it to the top. When she made it to the top, she stopped to rest. In her sleep, she had a dream about the afterlife. It was beautiful, unlike anything...

It was summer, but Joanna couldn't enjoy it. Because of her taste in music and her beliefs, she faced criticism. Not only was she being knocked down by school mates and neighbors, she was also facing criticism from her own family, save for her parents. One day, she said to herself, "I can't take it anymore. I have to run away. I doubt anyone will miss me when I'm gone." Without a second thought, she ran into the forest behind her house. For the first three days, Joanna was happy to be on her own, away from all the criticism and insults. However, on the fourth day, she began to feel a bit lonely....

One day, Joanna and Millie were hanging out at Joanna's house. Joanna's grandparents made a surprise visit. They acted friendly upon meeting Millie, but they gave Joanna a stern look when they saw the letters, "L, G, B, and T" on Millie's shirt. Oh, no. This couldn't be good. After Millie left, Joanna's grandparents simultaneously asked, "Joanna, may we see you in the kitchen?" Joanna followed them in the kitchen. That never meant anything good. Her grandfather said, "Your friend's a queer, isn't she?" Joanna said, "They don't call them queer anymore, Grandpa. Besides, Millie doesn't like to...

One day, Joanna was walking through the neighborhood. It was a cold January day, and as she was walking, she encountered some of her schoolmates. They started throwing random objects at her. She ran as fast as she could, and as she ran, she looked behind her. Unfortunately, there was a rock in front of her, and she tripped over it. She tumbled down the hill, into the frozen pond. The ice was very thin and broke beneath her weight. She could barely swim, and the ice was too thin for gripping. She cried for help, hoping someone would hear her. Just when she was about to give up, she heard Paul's...

One day, Paul and Joanna were hanging out with their friends, Ian and Millie. Some bullies started making fun of Millie. She was often bullied because she was homosexual. They said, "Go get hormone replacement therapy, you fucking queer!" She began to cry. Ian said, "She doesn't need hormone replacement therapy! She's fine the way she is!" Joanna said, "That's exactly right!" Paul then said, "But you all need attitude adjustment therapy!" The bullies were stunned. Joanna said, "Look, if you're opposed to homosexuals, that's fine, but don't curse at her and tell her to get hormone replacement...

As the months passed, Joanna and Paul became quite close. One day, Paul said to Joanna, "I think it's time I tell you something that I haven't told to, well, anyone." She said, "I do, too. I'll let you go first." He said, "You remember that I was adopted by an American family last year, right?" She said, "Of course." He said, "Well, I have yet to tell anyone what happened to my parents." She asked, "What happened?" He said, "My father was killed in a car crash when I was young, so I never spent much time with him. I did spend a lot of time with my mother, especially since I was an only child....

Cedar Valley is located in the Bible Belt of the United States. This small town is full of bible-thumping Puritans. A small percentage of the population is different. An eighth grader by the name of Joanna is one of the different ones. Because she was a dissenter, one who disagrees with the bible-thumping Puritans, she was often bullied. One day, she was beaten. The school nurse said she was fine, but she was really bruised. After school was dismissed, she sat on the bench in front of the school to wait on her mother. One of her school mates sat beside her. He said in his English accent, "Hi,...

Catherine's Point of View
One night, I was talking with one of my friends. I said, "I'm going to tell you something that I don't usually tell anyone. It was the second worst part of the eighth grade, the part I didn't include in my story." She said, "You can tell me anything." I said, "During the last six months of my seventh grade year, I ended up with endometriosis. The following summer, I had a hysterectomy. At the beginning of my eighth grade year, I told one of my friends. Later, she wrote in one of the bathroom stalls, 'Catherine is a slut puppy.' That nickname spread like wildfire. I'm...

One morning, during the summer, I noticed something wasn't right with one of my dogs. My Labrador, Sadie, seemed very lethargic. She did not want to eat or drink anything. I felt of her stomach, and it was really hard. My uncle took her to the vet, and it turned out her stomach had bloated. The vet tried to empty the blockage, but to no avail. The only humane thing was having her euthanized. As if that wasn't bad enough, I got a call from my friend, Sally, asking for me and Gavin to come to the hospital. I asked, "What's wrong?" She said, "You remember when I was treated...

Catherine's Point of View
One day, I received a call that Gavin was hurt. I went over to his house to see if he was okay. He had a big cut on his face. It was deep, but he didn't need stitches. He has some bruising around the cut as well. I asked, "What happened?" He said, "I was opening the car door, and I accidentally hit myself in the face. I fainted when I saw blood." I said, "I'm sorry. I hope that heals up soon." He said, "I'm sure it will." He was left with a scar on his face. The one good thing about it was that he gained some respect. When I got beat up near the end of the school year,...
