Oley Cub Scout Pack 569 and children from the community were invited to take part in a Pokémon Tournament sponsored by Pack 569 and Deal Me In Games, held at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church on Friday August 10.

The church’s gymnasium was filled with food and activities including a temporary tattoo booth, picture taking area with a large painting of Pikachu and Ash, and an area to buy Pokémon cards from Deal Me In Games.

While some children arrived with tons of their own cards, before the tournament began children in attendance were given a free deck of cards, dice, and a tournament map that they were then instructed how to use.

“It’s really great for them because the game involves a lot of math. It’s mostly adding and subtracting,” said Scout Den Leader Holly Smith.

In addition to instructions on how to play the card game correctly, the children were given a brief lesson on the importance of winning and losing in life and how to do so graciously.

“It’s really funny because they have all been trading cards back and forth,” Smith laughed, ”...and my son ended up trading some of his cards for fake Pokémon cards, but that’s a life lesson. There’s value in that.”
