Taking time to think over what I have to say, I take the time to write down the following.

While many think Elizabeth, only married George because of her financial problems, this is not the main reason. First it was to get back at Ross. Here is why.

First. Elizabeth didn't not have to marry Francis, she was not held down my any binding contract, but she married him all the same. She said she regretted it, but I feel that is only because she wanted to make Ross jealous. I doubt anyone noticed the many visits she paid him at his house not accompanied anyone. Back then, that would have been considered scandalous. You have to remember things were a lot different back then. A married woman paying visits to her old flames residence alone was unheard of in those times.

Second. She always had to have Ross wrapped around her finger. Even if it was only a little. Did anyone else notice the soft smiles and subtile commits she always made to him. For example, when she was talking about how Francis did not approve of her taking a interest in mining. Ross asked if marriage always disapproved of such things. She responded with, "Perhaps it depends on the partners." It wasn't what she said exactly, it was how she said it. And when she told Ross and she still "HAD FEELINGS" for him, she didn't only to arouse dead passions that he has long since gotten rid of.

Third. While she may have been married to Ross' cousin, she knew full well that Ross and George were at odds. Elizabeth, knew that telling Ross, she was going to marry George, would have defiantly enraged him, causing him to do something he was going to regret. She knew that it would cause a problem with Ross and Demelza's marriage. In the end, she hoped that Ross would leave Demelza and Jeremy for her. You cannot tell me that she didn't incite passions between Ross and herself when he came to talk to her that night she sent him the letter, telling him that she was marrying George. If not, rewatch that episode again and listen carefully to the way she says things to Ross. The subtile way she asked is he could offer anything else, and then adding that "Do You?" Watch and listen and you will see what I am talking about.

So in the end, Elizabeth is not better then George. In fact, I believe that they are perfect for each other. Two Villains in a pod.
