Safe Haven is about a woman named Erin Tierney (Julianne Hough) who leaves her abusive husband Kevin Tierney (David Lyons) knowing he will stop at nothing to find her since he is a detective in the Boston Police Department. She attacks Kevin with a knife, goes to her neighbor Mrs. Feldman (Irene Ziegler), gets a bus ticket, escapes being caught by Kevin, and flees to a small town called Southport.
    Once settled in Southport, she goes by the name Katie and meets a new friend named Jo (Colbie Smulders). What Erin/Katie doesn’t know is that Kevin is on her trail and will stop at nothing to find her. She meets and begins a relationship with Alex (Josh Duhamel) who has no idea she’s married. Kevin creates a fake Wanted poster where he cites Erin as a suspect in his “murder” as a way of flushing her out. However, Kevin’s decision causes him to be put on suspension without pay.
Alex falls for Kevin’s lies and tells her to leave which she decides to do since Kevin will find her. She tells Alex the truth about her abusive marriage to Kevin and Kevin does indeed find her. He sees her with Alex, gets his gun, matches, gasoline, and a cigarette lighter so he can start a fire. Jo comes to Erin in a dream and tells her Kevin is there. She sees him and they get into a confrontation. Kevin pours gasoline all over the grounds of Alex’s store and house and starts a fire.
    Alex sees the fire, saves his daughter Lexie from the fire, and sees Erin’s struggle with Kevin. She shoots him and becomes a widow. He then gives her a letter from his deceased wife who we find out is Jo.
