2006's Superman Returns might look like a reboot of Superman, but it's actually a sequel to the Christopher Reeve Superman films. Rebooting franchises has been a very common trend in Hollywood. However, the love for the classic Superman films was so strong that it was decided to make a film that would serve as a nostalgic tribute to what came before.
Superman Returns is meant to serve as a sequel to Superman: The Movie and Superman 2. The events of Superman 3 and 4, as well as the Supergirl spin-off film are ignored. While it's a bit disappointing that Superman Returns ignores some underrated films in the franchise, it makes up for it by doing a fantastic job of continuing the storylines from the first two films. Superman Returns has been accused of being too much like the original films, because it uses a lot of the same dialogue and ideas. However, the film also has some new ideas. While Lex Luthor's villainous goals continue being about land, Superman Returns takes things further by having Lex use the Fortress of Solitude for his land scheme. Also, the film has a major twist involving someone in Superman's family.
Brandon Routh was hired to play Superman, because of his resemblance to Christopher Reeve. At the time, Brandon Routh's performance got a lot of mixed reception, but I love it. I think that he did a wonderful job at capturing the whimsical heart and feel of Christopher Reeve's Superman. While this is the only film that Brandon Routh played Superman in, he did get to reprise the role in 2019's Crisis on Infinite Earths TV special. Also, Brandon Routh got to play a different DC superhero, who was called the Atom, in the Legends of Tomorrow TV series.
The film has a number of great performers. James Marsden, who played Cyclops in the X-Men films, played Lois Lane's new love interest. Frank Langella, who was the live-action Skeletor, played Perry White. Noel Neill, the original Lois Lane actress, and Jack Larson, the original Jimmy Olsen actor, both had cameos in the film. Also, thanks to the use of some old footage, Marlon Brando got to make one last appearance as Jor-El.
I have such fond memories of seeing the film with my grandfather, so it's a film that means a lot to me. The film also means a lot to me, because I love how much respect the film has for Christopher Reeve's version of Superman. As a kid, I loved playing with my toy of Brandon Routh's Superman. I played with it so much over the years that it eventually broke from overuse. Thankfully, I have a doll of Brandon Routh's Superman that I still have to this very day.
