Before Time
Chapter 1
Meeting the Guitar Boy, and the Punk(s)
My name is Gwendolyn Daniela Gray. I was born in Washington State. My “family” moved to California last year. I am 15. My wardrobe would be classified as Punk/Goth. For example, today I am wearing a black T-shirt with a blue star on it, and a teal skirt to match my hair. My hair is naturally brown, with a teal streak in the front. I don’t normally wear T-shirts because of my parents. You couldn’t see the bruises that way. Let me explain a little: My mom and dad are alcoholics, and they hit me. A lot. When I was smaller, like 4, is when it started. My dad lost his job and we had to move to the “bad” side of town. Soon it was visible when they hit my face. The neighbors would ask, “What happened to little Gwen?” And my parents would say, “She has gotten in the habit of wrestling with the older boys in the neighborhood.” But it would never be true.
After that they started punching my ribs and arms. “Gwen? Get over here now!” my dad yelled. “Yes sir?” I said back. “Before you go to school, I want to remind you of the consequences of friends.” My dad told me. When he said “friends” he got an evil glint in his eye. “I can’t have any because they can’t ask questions and if they do, I will tell them.” I told my dad. “That’s right now get out!” I ran out the door with my black Messenger bag over my shoulder. Once I got to the bus, the only free seat was next to a boy with a green Mohawk. “Hey. I’m Duncan.” He said. He obviously liked me so I decided to be nice. “Gwen.” I said. I took out my sketchpad, and started to draw. Before I knew it, Duncan asked, “Is that you being beat up?” I was a little startled by the question but I looked and saw I drew my dad hitting me. “Mind your own business.” I told him. “Well, I just wanted to know, because you have a big fat bruise on your arm.” He said. He was right. I did have a bruise the size of a small pancake. I covered it with my hand. Duncan said, “Wait, that looks like a fist. Let me see.” He took my and away from my arm, but before he could look at it we pulled into the school. “Bi!” I said. I ran to my locker, and dialed the combination. “Hey.” Duncan said as he walked up behind me. “Can you just get lost please?” I asked. He looked hurt but at that point I didn’t care. I didn’t want him hurt. The bell rang so I rushed off to class. My teacher in health was doing a speech about…. child abuse. He said if anybody had any experience, knew somebody, or had been hit before, to raise their hand. I raised my hand. “Gwen?” Mr. Collin said. “Well, I, umm…….” I trailed off, unsure what to say. “Well, Gwendolyn, what is it?” Mr. Collin pressed. “Actually I had a question.” I said. He nodded so I continued. “What do you do if someone is abusing you?” Duncan, who sat across the room from me, looked confused, thoughtful, and questioning at the same time. Oh crap! I thought. But, as usual, Mr. Collin had the answer. “Well, what you should do is tell a friend or an adult, or anyone you trust to help.” Oh. Well that sounds simple enough. After that, the rest of the day flew by.
I got on the bus last, and of course, Duncan’s seat was the only one open. “Hey, Sunshine.” He said. “What?” I asked. “I nickname everyone.” He replied as if that cleared everything up. I blond boy wearing a hat whispered something in Duncan’s ear. “Good idea, Geoff.” Duncan said. He turned to me, and I flinched. “So, Gwen, me and Geoff and a bunch of our friends were going to go to the movies later. Wanna come?” Believe it or not, I have never been to the movies with a friend before, so I said, “Well, ok. But who’s going?” Duncan ran through a list of five people. “Geoff’s girlfriend, Bridgette, my buds DJ and Trent, DJ’s friend, LeShawna, and a girl from my science class, Lilly.” I thought, that’s not too bad. I mean, I knew LeShawna a little, but not very well. The bus pulled up to my stop, and Duncan said, “So, 5-ish?” I smiled and nodded. I took a deep breath, and walked into the house. “Mom? Are you home?” My mom yelled yes from the kitchen, so I walked in. “Um, Mom, I take journalism in school, and I have to go to the movies to review the new movie, Cyberspace 3: ET. Is that ok?” Mom snapped her head up and said, “Who is going with you?” I made a disgusted face and said, “Oh, I hate them, all they do is goof around while I do all their work. Their names are Lilly, Duncan, Geoff, LeShawna, Bridgette, DJ, and Trent.” Mom nodded her approval and asked, “What time?” I told her around five, which is in an hour. “Go get ready.” Mom said. After spinning through the shower, picking out an outfit, and deciding on make-up, I had to say I liked this outfit. I was wearing a teal t-shirt that said, “Do I scare you?” and had a cartoon Dracula underneath. I was wearing black boot cut jeans, and fake fur boots. “Mom, I’m leaving!” I yelled before running out the door. I ran to the theater as fast as I could in wedge boots. When I got there it was three minutes till 5. Geoff ran up to me. “Gwen! Dude, the movie is starting!” I ran with him into the theater room, and Duncan introduced me to everyone. “and last but not least, this is Lilly.” I turned to where Duncan was pointing and saw a girl with dirty blonde hair and a pale blue streak. She had on a blue t-shirt that had a tree on it, and dark green shorts. “How do you all know each other?” I asked. “Well, Geoff is my best friend since kindergarten, Bridge is his girlfriend, Trent and I both play guitar, DJ is Geoff’s friend, LeShawna was my partner for a science project, and Lilly was attacked by Evil-jandro and I saved her butt.” Duncan answered. Lilly hadn’t spoken at all yet. Trent, however, walked right up to me. “Hey. I’m Trent, but you already knew that.” He said. That made me giggle. “So do you play an instrument?” He asked me. “No, but I want to ply the electric so bad!” He told me he played the acoustic. I actually kind of liked him… NO! I can’t! Lilly walked out of the theater, like ‘everyone ignores me’. “This always happens.” She suddenly said. “What always happens?” I asked her. “Duncan always just ignores me as soon as someone new comes in.” Lilly said. I actually felt bad considering my life.
