Note: The version of Godfather 3 that I saw is Francis Ford Coppola's director's cut of the film, rather than the theatrical cut.

There are very few trilogies that are as iconic as The Godfather trilogy. To this day, it remains one of the most celebrated and influential film franchises of all time. There's a countless amount of critics who consider The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 to be among the top 10 greatest films of all time.

I have seen several films, which are beloved by critics and audiences, that didn't appeal to me. I have become used to having unpopular opinions.

With all that said, does The Godfather trilogy live up to the hype? I'm happy to say that it does.

The Godfather has been discussed, reviewed and honored by millions of people. There's probably thousands of critics who could do a better job at analyzing the films than I ever could. However, for what it's worth, I want it to be known that The Godfather trilogy is the greatest trilogy that I've had the pleasure of seeing.

In modern times, several shows, films and comics like using mobs in their stories. While mob stories have been around for a long time, The Godfather has been the most influential mob story that's ever been told. It's easy to paint mobsters as one-dimensional bad guys who'll do anything for money. The Godfather's take on the mob is much deeper.

As to be expected, the main characters of The Godfather, Michael and Vito, aren't heroes, nor are they role-models that people should be inspired by. However, the film's writing is so brilliantly crafted that they manage to make the characters sympathetic.

The protagonist of the trilogy, Michael, actually starts off as a nice guy who wants to have a simple, happy life with his girlfriend. However, the departure of his beloved father leaves an empty seat in the family business. Michael always loved his father, but he didn't want to become like him. However, he ends up becoming involved in the family business. At first, he wants to clean up the corrupt elements of his family's business. However, things don't go according to plan.

Over the course of three films, Michael Corleone has one the most well-crafted, sharply-written character arcs of all time. He starts off as a fairly normal man with a corrupt family, but he ends up becoming the most dangerous and powerful mob boss in the world. It's not exactly a happy story, but it's undeniably compelling, fascinating and brilliant.

I could say that the trilogy has good acting, but that would be an understatement. The Godfather films feature some of the greatest actors of all time.

James Caan, Lee Strasberg and Abe Vigoda provide very strong, memorable performances that make the supporting characters stand-out in a powerful way.

During the time that The Godfather was being made, Marlon Brando had already become a legend. There was a time where he was considered to be the greatest actor in the entire world, and his Oscar-winning performance in The Godfather proves why. Instead of just using his real voice, Marlon Brando gave Vito Corleone an incredibly distinct way of speaking that's unlike anything else. Marlon Brando is one of the most irreplaceable treasures that Hollywood's ever had. Because of that, the thought of anybody else playing Vito Corleone is hard to stomach. With that said, Robert De Niro turned out to be a spectacular actor in his own right. His Oscar-winning impression of Marlon Brando was greatly done.

The star of the trilogy, Al Pacino, started off as a good actor, and as the films go on, he keeps growing and growing as a performer. In the films, Michael ends up having a similar type of fame and legacy as his father. Appropriately, Al Pacino ended up achieving a level of success that was comparable with Marlon Brando's.

The Godfather Parts 1 & 2 are universally loved. It goes without saying that those films are masterpieces. What about the 3rd film? When it came out, the 3rd film got decent reviews, but it didn't receive the type of love that the other 2 films received. I saw the director's cut of the film, so I can't speak for the theatrical cut. The director's cut of The Godfather 3 is a great film in it's own right. It finishes off Michael's story in an emotional, exciting way. It's a work of art that deserves to be seen and appreciated.

Saying that The Godfather films are popular classics is a giant understatement. Thankfully, The Godfather trilogy isn't overrated or overhyped. It lives up to it's legacy. It features the best writing and acting in the history of film trilogies, so if you can only see one trilogy, The Godfather trilogy is certainly one to consider watching.
